Here's a question for you guys, how would you handle this situation if you were at MS?

Scenario: You are Phil Spencer. The Xbox One development is going well, but there are small issues regarding online (like the party chat issues mentioned in the OP) that you hope will be ironed out by launch.

Things are going well and you are hopeful that by working overtime, you will be able to fix these by launch. If not, it will take a week or two at worst to fix them. Things could be better, but they are still not that bad.

Suddenly, word gets out and Mort posts this info on his blog. Now you have hundreds of angry fanboys asking you stuff like 'Is the online borked?' on your twitter. How do you answer?
We're not talking about that right now.

Do you:
A) Say 'There are no issues', and hope whatever issues there are get fixed by launch, and no one remembers this. However, by saying this, you are playing with fire. If you don't fix the issues, they will call you an outright liar and this will be a PR nightmare.

B) Admit to the issues but ensure they will get fixed by launch. While this is an honest reply, its marketing suicide. Gamers might cancel pre-orders based on knee-jerk impulses, and if you end up fixing all the issues by launch, you would regret ever admitting you had any.

C) Give a non-answer.

Its a damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-don't situation, and I don't blame guys like Spencer or Penello for giving non-answers. Its not because they are being dishonest, its just that its a shitty situation they are placed in and too early to start answering this as the console's still a month out.

They should wait until they know for sure whether they can deliver a fix or not, but still early enough so that people can cancel pre-orders if they so choose. A week before the console ships would be a good timeframe.

P.S. I'm talking out of my ass in a fantasy scenario and I don't really know how the business works.

Yeah, it's tricky. If it is true and they confirm, it gives later rumours more credibility. If it isn't true and they deny, they look untrustworthy. I would hope they would make a statement before launch if the problems aren't resolved though, if they don't do that they are just abusing consumers.

Forced Skype integration, dictated by the higher ups - I guess?

Yeah, but why wouldn't they have all VOIP through Skype, handled by the OS instead of per game? That's the biggest thing that I don't understand (if this is true).

Edit: Wouldn't they, seriously, I'm just walking into crap today...

TBH waiting until after release to drop another megaton feels like an organised attempt to keep the bad news coming.

If there is a major problem with the X1 as a potential buyer of said machine I'd like to know what that is. What good is teasing all of us and then disappearing?

Given the asking price especially, I don't think it's right.

We should get Brass Eye on the case

Pretty much works that way in any business.

Maybe its due to the three tier OS?

To be fair, I haven't got a fucking clue. Having an OS on the disc for each game is literally a level of stupid that only the Wii managed to attain.

I don't understand why ms would change from the current system?

I think the only change is the fact that there is now a swap from System OS to Game OS and vice versa for handling party chat. And it only affects a single player, not the whole party. A party with people doing a mix of things like watching Netflix and playing games are not all affected when someone starts playing Halo. That is silly.

Why we should care about corporation ? Why i need to get in shoes of Phil and state some problems ?

When Sony got PSN hack or PS3 launch it noone cared about taking shoes of Kaz at that time. Taking personally what corporation should and should not do and taking side is mental imo.

NeoGAF has its own insider that are almost always right. I don't care what MS execs are trying to say if their message conflicts with our insiders truthfacts.

This thread moves too fast.
I see verendus posted a couple of leaks, and people keep linking the summary on every page.
Please tell me what are we talking about so I can be up to speed

Tell me how you really feel. No really, this reads like a youtube comment.
I'm the last person you'll find doubting anything CBoaT, or Mort type. I'm not disputing what Mort wrote on his blog. I'm not defending MS.
There were a few people complaining about Spencer's non-answer on twitter a few pages back, and I'm wondering how he could have said anything other than what he said.
Sometimes people just dilute information into infantile good vs. evil BS like you just did, and I'm just curious what other people could have done.

Understanding things from their perspective helps explain their decisions. Few will be interested in justifying those decisions, but understanding them is just as important as reading 'truthfacts' at the moment.

So this is what was supposed to be huge news? I'm not discrediting mort or anything but this is just a whole other level of basic shit turning into unnecessary drama. Absolutely no new technology launch has ever been perfect. Every single thing from hardware to software, there is always issues....

You know what, I'm over this. This is just too much now.

Please. People have been killing Nintendo for the Wii U's sluggish OS and missing launch features, what makes MS exempt from criticism?

You have not seen this one...an amazing work of art from over the weekend from Vashetti (i think)....

Ha, I had seen this one - it's been around a little longer than that.

I'm also disappointed by the lack of quality new GIFs inspired by this thread specifically though. GAF, get to work!

Jesus, I just read through the entire thread (for the most part). What a shitstorm. I'm amazed at this whole thread and the development of it all, haha.

I dunno, maybe because Nintendo said utterly nothing and people had to find out on Launch day and then wait ages to get a patch. Apart from random footage and dev kit stuff, we have not seen retail units and what they work like.

I think that is something people may be underestimating about Microsoft. If there are genuine problems, I'd imagine they would fix them quickly. They have some very talented people there. And I imagine XBL would be a top priority. That service is a big point of pride for that platform.

In reference to CBOAT, I've been thinking about what it could potentially be, and nothing really seems to fit. I'm wondering what it could. I don't think he'd be referring to a potential hardware problem, it'd have to be on the software side. But what the hell could it be? That's hard to figure out. It's like everything that it could be is already a big negative point that has rumoured.

Indeed. Microsoft have some supremely talented people in OS development. Windows 7 will go down in history as one of the greatest and most stable.

My personal theory on the CBOAT info is a spin on previously revealed information. I believe that the performance on final hardware was significantly worse than third party devs were getting on the target hardware they were developing on because the target hardware provided by MS was more powerful and did not have eSRAM (thuway said to expect a post-E3 downgrade of visuals on the Bone). After the performance hit I think MS were under pressure from third parties to increase performance. They upclocked the GPU in response, but it wasn't enough and the engines built for the target hardware essentially emulates the eSRAM as 1 bank of 32MB rather than the 4x 8MB banks. This may have caused massive rendering problems as games now have to be tiled to get to 1080p with a decent amount of effects which requires a big rewrite of rendering engines, something that is not easy to accomplish so close to the release.

Obviously this all my own speculation, but I believe it is what CBOAT sent to Bish.

So that gives MS a free pass?

So we can't be upset until it is already out in the wild?

Not sure that this counts as in insider source but apparently a certain bigbox store will not have working demo xbones until after the holidays.

And so what? I'm not saying they are exempt however people are making it seem like this is an issue they have to deal with. I can bet half the people aren't even buying X1 day one and are bringing these normal issue front center to make it seem like anyone who buys an X1 should care. To tell you the truth, they don't care. Why should anyone care. If people aren't buying the Wii U, why are they mad that the OS is sluggish? They don't have to deal with it so what the big deal. It's expected and we have seen Nintendo make efforts to make it faster so what is really the point? Why are we point out an issue half of us really don't give a damn about? Is to to make our purchases look better? Is it to make people who are buying an X1 scared or sad or make them feel like shit for picking their choice? Like seriously, explain to me what any of this is suppose to harm or who?

And to top it all off i just read Phil Spencer's twitter feed. He is getting hit hard with questions and just bailed.

That and the Xbox One demo truck where the OS is off limits to people playing games on the console.

For their sake i hope they get it right before launch.

Okay, I'm home from work, I've got my wedges, Aioli sauce and coke and GAF has my full attention.

Drop dos bombs, CBOAT.

I expected the XB1 and PS3 OSes to be superior compared to ps3 and 360. MS especially. They make them for a living. Missing/delayed features is one thing, broken is another. Nintendo is in their own stupid little no online multiplayer world. Anyways, with your logic, no one should discuss anything about a console they don't have.

People killed Nintendo *after* they got their hands on the sluggish WiiU OS. If people get their Xbox Ones home and the OS is still a mess, then they should kill Microsoft.
