PS4 sells through 1 million units on Day 1 in NA, best start in PS / console history

So could we expect another million from the EU?

So if the ps4 could sell another 500k in two weeks and then add the uk sales they could conceivably be at 2.5 million in 2 weeks.

if by UK you mean the entire EU, sure.

Sony isn't shipping a million consoles just to the UK, come on now. they didn't make THAT many.

Most people don't buy next-gen consoles to play indie games and cross-gen ports. The PS4's launch lineup is underwhelming.

Compare this lineup to others though. This launch has 3 huge franchise releases (COD, BF4, AC4) along with Killzone, Need for speed, 2k14, and a whole lot more. This launch is not as anemic as people make it out to be. Perfect? No. Satisfying? Definitely

two? holy....

Could you say which you work at:
Games shop
Supermarket
Department store(john lewis etc)

I know you won't want to go to specifics but curious.

Supermarket. Though we sell a lot of consoles/games as we're much cheaper.

We had very little preorders so the day one stock may reflect that.

How are the sales in canada normally? The 1 million on Day 1 includes canada sales, so it should be still a bit lower than 1m for NPD. And it also depends how many new consoles they can ship until the end of november.

Would like to know the canada/na split.
I think it's typically ~10%, but it would depend on how Sony allocated shipments. Also this is one day remember, there's still another 14 days in the tracking period, including Black Friday shopping; the PS4 should end up quite a bit over a million in NPD quite easily.
Fantastic numbers, but I think part of that was due to Sony's amazing manufacturing + logistics being able to get enough consoles to consumers on day-one.

I wonder if the PS4 will overtake the Wii U in the USA by the end of this holiday season.
I think it will actually, if December at least matches November - we get 2M+. I'm only really expecting the Wii U to do something like 600K November/December.
I don't think it'll beat it, it may get close, but likely what we'll see is references to the $ amount as opposed to units.

IE:

PS4 : 1,0000,000 * 399 = $399,000,000
XB1: $399,000,000 / 499 = 799599 units
I don't really think consumers are going to go out two weeks in a row and spend $400M+, as noted by some before, the success of this launch will impact negatively on the XB1.

It's 2013, why can't we just have an app that alerts you when it's in stock at online and B&M stores?

It would've been very valuable to me if I could afford one right now lol. Been blowing my phone up with updates for in stock systems since Friday.

1m just for UK? :O
That would be completely insane....probably they have stock ready for 1m at launch day for the whole european market.

Funny because as we've just seen, the most people ever just bought a PS4 in one day. Game.set.match.

Launch titles are meaningless.

It is. Launch titles is just something to play while waiting for the big games. Most launch titles are crap, who would play 400-500 just for launch titles? I bought my PS4 for future games and something to play while waiting.

Ok this is the first time I've been worried about picking up my PS4 from Tesco, ordered in June so should be ok...Really surprised any supermarket is only getting 2 xb1's though...

After the talk of certain german retailers have 450x more PS4 stock than XB1 I kind of assumed the UK and US would be flooded with stock.

Absolutely. And as someone already noted on another thread. Buying a console you are also implicitly committing to another extra yearly expense in order to play online. That will make many hold on on buying a second very similar featured box, but $100 more expensive so close to buying a PS4.

Launch lineups really don't matter to most of the general public especially if parents are buying one for Christmas they all know what Call of Duty and FIFA are.

Most of our pre-orders have been for Ghosts, ACIV, Battlefield and FIFA. People just want nex-gen on their favourite franchise and obviously Killzone and Forza for exclusives etc.

I'm impressed...just not that impressed. Here's why:

-Flipping consoles at launch is a business now. It's why Wii U had a respectable launch, even though there is obviously little actual demand for the console. Microsoft won't ship a million Xbones next week, but I have little doubt they'd sell them all if they did.

-As far as I know, this is the first time Sony or Nintendo have skipped Japan for the entire holiday season at launch in order to bring more consoles out in the West. It's why they were able to ship a million consoles here.

It's an impressive accomplishment, but next-gen isn't decided, or saved, based on launch sales.

Wow, so many caveats. Why can't this simply be a good launch?

- Flipping consoles - you think it'll impact the number that much?

- making preemptive speculative statements about how MS could sell more, they're just likely to gone supply constrained? Nicely downplaying the PS4 launch

- Sony might be delaying Japan for a couple of months! but they are still launching in 31 countries by nov 29th Vs 13 for Xbox. Which company (if any) do you think is more likely to be biasing stock for a NA launch?

- oh and even if all those don't work, the launch is irrelevant anyway.

Nice work.

Good for them!

First console launch I couldn't possibly care less in forever though. I'll probably get one eventually but there's no rush.

They will get it eventually. The thing about launch titles is that it's always rushed. I wouldn't want my favorite franchise to be rushed. I did pick up BF4 to play, it would be nice if they fixed the servers. I'll just play Resogun in the meantime. Fantastic game.

Exclusive games are nice, but I agree most people buy consoles for multi platform games and the variety of games a system will get.

Well done Sony, this is an amazing machine. I've had it on the entire day downloading, streaming, and gaming. It doesn't make any noticeable noise and I haven't had a single issue. Also this thing is damn sexy.

A Gaffer got the first PS4? Awesome! I knew I liked Joey for a reason.

The people behind him seemed so jealous haha.

PS4 is a must have in UK this year, on amazon, it's only behind GTA in yearly sales, meaning it's ahead of CoD, TLoU, Fifa, AC, BF etc.

they will sell whatever is shipped, I'd guess 500k.

No way UK does 500k on 1/5th the population of the US. 250k is a nice round number, so Sony might ship in 300k to give them a nice headline. 1m across all markets?

LOL!!!

Does anyone know who this guy is on here? He did the Banderas which is a pretty big indication that he at the very least spectates GAF, but he may be a user who needs to step forward and claim his fame.

I could have sworn the first thing he said on camera was "Sup NeoGAF" or something like that. It just wasn't clear because the mic wasn't right up to his mouth, or the hostess was speaking, I forget.

Boy has this ever been the generation of downplaying the good and bad so far. Downplaying DRM, downplaying the bandwidth limitations, downplaying 720p, downplaying PR disaster after PR disaster, and now downplaying the most successful console launch in the history of the industry.

Sooner or later you'll just have to come to the realization that one company screwed up, and the other did not. It is that simple.

I honestly don't understand why people are not more blown away by this. This remind me of "only a million preorders?" but this time with buttloads of comparative statistics and stats to prove its an all-time high, and still some people find a way to downplay it. The latest excuse? Resellers.

Remarkable.

I suspect there's around 200k for the UK in the first shipment.

They're aiming 5 mil by March, so their production is aiming maybe 1 mil up of that?

In the first allotment I imagine it will be about 200k, specfically looking at the precedent PSP set, with another before Christmas of the same amount?

When I was lining up for a PS4, a lot of people didn't even know it was launching. I doubt a lot of resellers would know. Most people asked if we were lining up for Black Friday.

i would say another 1mil across all EU territories is a reasonable estimate for launch...im very interested to see December NA sales...i want to see how well Sony is able to resupply areas after launch

Not an asshole.
Well, this puts the Wii U's situation into a pretty clear light. I love the system, but god damn it's in a rough position right now. Needs to be $250 baaad.

Yeah he definitely was saying something about neogaf before he was drowned out by the cheering.

That's a pretty big reminder to people that launch weekends don't matter on a large scale.

Yeah but unlike Wii u and vita, everyone knows ps4 will be getting a consistent stream of games, so I don't think it's exactly a good comparison.

I think everyone here knew both the vita and Wii u were not going to get good third party support.

Thanks, should I just show up every morning till then to see if they got any?

The future shop near where I live, said they'd get another shipment within two weeks. So maybe call everyday or try and get an employee to let you know when their next shipment is due. Sony will definitely restock heavily the weeks leading up to Christmas.

lmao. yeah resellers. All maybe 2,000 of em are just hiking those numbers up. The thing they forget to mention, those resellers are .. RESELLING. They are not hording consoles lol. They are putting em back into use.

Some people just can't enjoy the moment I guess. Everything has to be smothered with negativity. Pretty old if you ask me. Sit back, enjoy the fact that Sony has been doing and saying all the right things, and get ready for an incredible next generation of gaming. Simple as that. This is just the start, it all gets better from here.

I don't know that I agree. I think it's not like, hugely important or some kind of leading indicator, but it clearly correlates very well with long term health. The PSP was very successful, of course. And before the PSP, the DS was the record holder, which became massively successful.

It seems like a necessary condition to not have a bomba. :)
