Uh, keep up the good fight then, ignoring all the glowing commentary from those who watched it before you two. If winning a site-wide popularity contest isn't indicative of a shared opinion, I'm not sure what is. God forbid someone said bad things about it on IRC.
I'm glad that a single vote dictates the esteem a show has for all time. Certainly saves space for other discussion.

You could simplify all voting to it being a popularity contest. The point is, how reflective do you want it to be of a community? How much weight do you want it to have in general?
It's more of a census of GAF as a whole, since most people who watch anime don't really want to come into the anime OTs.

I mean, I voted Yamato in the 2013 TV Show of the Year thread, and if we wanted anime to be taken seriously, then any anime show you watch should be able to go up against any other television show regardless of country of origin and format.

But that becomes a big debate that we've already had before, where I think television is television is television, whether it is a Columbian telenovella or a cartoon that airs at 3am in Japan.

Like I said, it depends on what you want it to be.

You have this weird perception of the show being wrongly slandered here. It's frustrating since you've never budged on this, and it goes far in ignoring all the good that was said about it. It also typifies a typically varied and nuanced array of opinions into one dismissive whole.

Yeah. Just reminds me of the Animated Film ghetto in the academy awards.

Wolf Children

First of all the music is fantastic. I think my favorite moment in the film
was when it snowed and they had the kids running and the transition from kids to wolves was excellent. It was the only time where all 3 could let loose but then we had what happened with Ame.

The ending
made me cry because you seen what she went through to raise those kids by herself and just like that it was time to let them go.

While watching the movie
I always thought that Ame would be the one to stay human and Yuki would be the one to stay a wolf.

Also the best anime mother.

LWA is still number one for me, it's easily the best thing I've seen all year.

Wolf Children is definitely in my top 5. Madoka Rebellion owns a whole bunch and should be watched by everyone and would've easily secured number 2 after LWA but its ineligible so we'll see what happens next year.

Other than that its going to be some combination of Love Lab, Watamote, Monogatari, GJ-Bu, and Kill La Kill, along with other stuff I may not remember off the top of my head. Golden Time I can't in good conscious include because it's not finished and, moreso than KLK, how I feel about it is going to greatly hinge on how the second half of the series goes.

If you put a gun to my head right this second regarding my favorite non-movie/non-OVA of 2013, I'd probably pick Love Lab over GJ-Bu by a hair. Love Lab blew me away on how well it did just about everything.

I figured Golden Time would win based on your Toradora love. lol

And GJ-Bu should win, if only because it doesn't have dorama!

Like I said, it depends on what you want it to be.
Well, it's weeaboo-GAF's favourite anime. I don't even know if the part of GAF that ignores people with anime avatars would even see the thread, let alone be remotely interested in the results.

Yeah. Just reminds me of the Animated Film ghetto in the academy awards.
Or in my case, the Canadian film and television awards. lol

Listening to the the 3rd track from the Kill la Kill OST is hysterical.

Been repeating "Ping Pong Circulate" for the past 10 minutes.

Also, I want the monkey to join Nudist Beach now.

I hope everyone does dishonorable mentions for fun this year like they did last year. It was amusing to see them posted in the actual results thread and at the very least we got "worst thing on the internet since child porn" out of it.

Quite honestly, nothing this year has gotten my blood boiling as much as AO did.

Since we can't come to an agreement we are now going to use the tried and testing method of having a list of nominations you have to pick from. I've formed a panel of respectable judges including me dad, some bloke from ANNCast and Richard Eisenbeis of Kotaku.

Just use the GOTY format.

let's consider ourselves lucky, then, that the industry isn't churning out true monumentally catastrophic 0/10 worst-ever-contender franchise-killers on a yearly basis.

There was plenty to vehemently hate this year; you just had to be watching the right/wrong shows.

I saw in the GOTY thread that firehawk likes Beyond Two Souls, an opinion which so thoroughly discredits him as to retroactively make Sword Art Online a good show.

Hey remember when I said Hyouka discussion contributes to a toxic atmosphere in this thread? It's a shame really, the show doesn't deserve that.

I figured Golden Time would win based on your Toradora love. lol

I'm a reasonable person, I think a show should stand on its own merits. Even still I really like Golden Time but just from my view of what AOTY is it's not the type of show where I can emphatically state that when it's only halfway done. Like, I think if you took these first 12 episodes of KLK and had them stand alone it'd still be one of my favorite shows of the year. I'm not so sure about Golden Time.

I might be tempted to just put it up there anyway if I don't find better candidates, especially if we actually are splitting movies/OVAs.

As for the voting, being a new anime watcher I wish there was a 'best thing not new that you saw for the first time this year' category.

Yeah. Sad I am. Overall I was really impressed. And surpised they didnt fuckip the ending. I expected it to get ruined by ending with hate and bile.

probably not going to make my top 10 for the year but i too was impressed by White Album 2, thought they handled the romantic stuff fairly well - didn't overdo the melodrama too much and kept the dialog relatively cliche free. well, relative in anime terms that is! shame the animation was a bit ropey at points but ehhh whatever, one of the better romance shows i've seen and a pleasant surprise.

I'm going on the opinions I had that led to me watching or not watching the show to begin with. Yes, it was favored and did get voted anime of the year. I'm not disputing that. I'm also not disputing that debates have allowed both sides of the argument to be presented. What I'm claiming that for a time it got put in the dog house for a while by multiple vocal posters with only Branduil really vouching for it.

You know, sometimes I do respect my fellow posters opinion on things, but in this case when I finally did watch Hyouka after being prodded by Nafe I felt misled! If in fact most everyone liked the show, then it was not communicated to me in the discourse of the thread itself. Now, to be clear, I've been describing a specific range of time. I'm not saying such things continue to the case, only that it merits consideration as debate continues. Jarmel was indignant at being considered categorically wrong, and wanted space in the discussion. I probably should have just said to remember that things can easily tip the other way.

Do dishonorable mentions take away points, or are they just there for the hell of it?

If they're going to be there, it should be purely for fun. The AotY should be a positive place devoted to praise and if there's an actual score impact it only invites tactical downvoting to chip away at something popular.

That break down is:

Code:
1. Game A ; 4 points
2. Game B ; 3 points
3. Game C ; 3 points
4. Game D ; 2 points
5. Game E ; 2 points
6. Game F ; 2 points
7. Game G ; 1 point
8. Game H ; 1 point
9. Game I ; 1 point
10. Game J ; 1 point

You've just added another spanner into the works!

This year it'll just run until Wolf Children and Yamato 2199 wins. If that doesn't happen, I'll just have to rig it. :(

I just don't get how someone goes from writing Toradora, which borders on the absurdity of jdrama but remains grounded, to the ghost Banri stuff we've gotten in Golden Time. :(

The one thing I like about the GOTY format is it forces people to read the OP and follow the directions.

It's amazing how many people aren't using semicolons.

I agree with this. Negative points means you will have people be downvoting shows they actually enjoyed or did not dislike the most just so the other series they liked more are rated higher up on the final list.

Just make it like the NBA draft. The number of points a show gets is the number of balls the show gets in the lottery. Then you just start picking out balls to determine the order of the list!

I have any emphatic dishonarable mentions because I don't watch bad shows as they air. Even KnK was mostly just bleh with flashes of something good rather than a complete disaster.

Also I just remembered Muromi-san was 2013, so add that as a possibility.

There was no fun to be had on that list.
