Super Smash Bros Wii U & 3DS Thread 4: New Year, Old Arguments

I don't think we're getting a January direct. Hope I'm wrong though.

What makes you say that?

There is precedence since Iwata expressed the desire to release a Nintendo Direct at least once every month and there was a Nintendo Direct last year in January. Hell, there were TWO in January. On top of that Shinen has stated they will be announcing their new Wii U title in the next few weeks, which is certainly within the boundaries of January, particularly late January like last year's Nintendo Direct.

There is no reason to expect any Smash-dedicated Direct when it isn't even close to the release date.
I think we are gonna get way MORE directs.

Nintendo gotta go into overdrive.
They need games to show for Nintendo Directs. Unless they magically increase their software production efforts by a lot, I don't think it would be different from last year except for that panic Wii U Direct in January.

Pokemon is a special case, and that Panic Direct was a special case too. I think we may get something for Pokemon Bank this month, but that would be a Mini Direct, and I think we're all talking about when to expect a normal Nintendo Direct.

And I don't recall them trying to go monthly, but rather bi-monthly with some small stuff in between.

They've done smaller directs before, like the one for Daigasso Brothers. So I don't doubt that there could be a direct for a potential new game plus content for previously announced games in January.

I was just wondering when we might get a release date announcement. The obvious contender would be E3, but I'm thinking the January Nintendo Direct may surprise us.

Oh please don't, I can't wait that long =( I'm getting nervous now about the possibility of the game coming out before E3

Okay so maybe we will, but I don't think we'll get a killer one like last January. Especially since December's was pretty darn good. I guess I'm just a pessimist. :/

Well they have to have a direct to announce release dates for Mario Kart, probably Bayonetta, and Smash.
I'm not sure if X will get a release date yet. SMT X FE is probably late 2014 / 2015 since we didn't see anything last year other than "in development".

This would be too easy tonight, but I'd make a bet with you on that one =p
Even I'm not that crazy. XD

I'd love it if we got a Direct either later this month or in early February. Hopefully it'll be one to compete with the amazing Direct we had around this time last year.

I'm not saying a Smash-dedicated Direct, I'm saying a general Direct. Plus, how do you know Smash is so far off? They've had two years to develop and now they're showing us trophies. A more specific release date like Fall 2014 or even something like May 2014 isn't unprecedented.

And Nintendo has plenty of games to show off during a Direct: Yarn Yoshi, SMTxFE, X, one big push for Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze again, maybe Mario Kart again, and Bayonetta not to mention their 3DS catalogue including Yoshi's New Island, Mario Golf, and Bravely Default and indie titles. There's plenty of room for Nintendo 3DS announcements too, and clarifying Pokemon Bank's new release date.

Panic Direct was a special case in that Nintendo was announcing games that were far far far early in development, but now it's been a year and those titles are ready to be shown off again. Plus, you didn't even address how I used Shinen as evidence.

We're getting a January Nintendo Direct, we just don't know what's in it. I want to believe in Smash release date or at least projected release date.

Edit: I may have been mistaken about Iwata wanting monthly Directs, but with how fast they're coming it's not exactly going to be a surprise if they do have on in January. In fact, there's been at least one direct for every month of 2013, with August-December all being mainline Directs.

I wonder what other games Nintendo "stole"...

SMTxFE won't get a release date until after DS2: Overclocked releases unless something is seriously fucked up at Atlus.

Wasn't that suppose to release in December of last year? Did it get delayed?

It's sad how he was just "there", he was the only badass human and we never got much of him.

What the hell could he do in a battle between Gods? They gave him a back story, made him playable and made him relavant to the second half of the game. What more do people want? Make him overstay his welcome and KI fans would flip.

Even with the games we already know about, they could make an exciting Direct. For example, gameplay details on X, or Yarn Yoshi, or Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem.

I was referring to IntelliHeath with that first part. :p

I wouldn't expect any release date info till later. We don't even have a release date for the Spring 2014 titles yet, let alone other seasons lol. Stating which part of 2014 is definitely possible.

Nintendo does have games to show, no doubt, but they won't have enough to some how do two times as many Directs, unless they start retreading or making them shorter.

The games you listed can be covered in Feburary also with actual release dates too maybe.

There's no reason for them to show off those titles announced last year in that Panic Direct it is month.

Shinen doesn't need to be in a worldwide Direct (NA, EU, JP) or even in a Direct to announce their game.

Anyways, I expect one in late January/early Feburary since that is the period they seem to go for and would allow them to update their release schedule accordingly.

"Mainline" ones would be the ones where there is one worldwide (NA, EU, JP) simultaneously and not for a specific game. Those have been bi-monthly outside of May and the E3 one.

If you expect one in late January then why are we even discussing this, since that's what I'm saying lol

If mainline ones are international, then we've had a "mainline" Nintendo Direct every month since October (the October one being NA and EU but that's international enough). 3 months in a row are not bad odds for a "mainline" one in January. And it just seems odd that Shinen would wait so long to announce their new game unless they want it to coincide with another event, most likely a Nintendo Direct.

I like waking up in time for the daily picture. Especially if it'll finally show Ike. Seriously, do it. It's Ike.

Or more of Pit. The more I played Brawl non-stop with my friends and the more they got better, Pit starts to really show his weaknesses if you're not going to be committed to a huge defensive game with his arrows (which, to me, are arguably the best projectiles in the game). The more offense-based Pit in Smash 4 is looking great, so that's definitely enough for me to get back to playing him seriously.

EDIT: oh yeah, announce Ness already. He's so awesome.

Anyone anticipating a Super Smash Bros dedicated Nintendo Direct before Mario Kart 8 is released is setting themselves up for disappointment.

Given that several indie developers are teasing new downloadable titles being announced in the coming weeks, it's probably not that large a stretch to say that is a hint of a coming Nintendo Direct this month.

As long as they at least announce a veteran every Nintendo Direct leading up to launch, I'm happy. Makes sense for characters that don't have any game releases coming up, like Game and Watch or Falco.

I don't think Nintendo will be announcing any more first party titles for Wii U this year. They've shown their hand already. At a January Direct, I expect a Mario Kart 8 release date, more Donkey Kong footage than anyone ever asked for, a Bayo 2 release date, X footage, and, of course, Sheik for Smash 4.

Bowser Jr. is a character I'm indifferent towards, but I feel like Sakurai has plenty of stuff to work with for his moveset to make him different from Bowser.

Bowser Jr. Moveset:
Neutral Special: Fire Balls - Shoots fire balls (not constantly breathing fire like Bowser)
Side Special: Paintbrush Flick - Whips out the brush and causes paint to come out, if it makes contact with an opponent, then it will cause continuous damage like the flower thing (not sure what it is called)
Down Special: Ground Pound
Up Special: Clown Car

His move-set can also be derived from the koopalings, like say his side b is him riding on lemmy's rubber ball

I'M FINISHED!

Um exCUSE me Sakurai but CLEARLY the best choice for Smash Bros would be my fav niche character HOWEVER you are clearly INCOMPETENT and
Doc Louise would be a great character. A nice mix of boxing, bicycle riding and chocolate eating for his move set.

At the very least have him follow Little Mac around shouting advice from the back of the stage, little like the pokemon trainer.

Doc Louise? Is that Glass Joe's coach?

This should indeed happen.

Honestly I think we're going to be getting veterans more often and probably majority of nintendo directs will be showing newcomers this year. I think rosalina opened the floodgates

Pic of the day. Zelda's strong side attack. It's a slash attack that utilizes her magic to make even a simple slash look sharp.
