Media Create Sales: Week 50, 2016 (Dec 12 - Dec 18)

- Action-RPG instead of 'open-world' brawler.
- No licenced shops from Akihabara in the world.
- General lower-budget feeling compared to previous games (i.e. NPCs are coloured silhouettes instead of individual designs).
- PS4-only release of previously handheld-focused franchise

I'm sure they all played a role in the decline.

Didn't they remove the clothes stripping too? I felt it was a combination of that and the Akihabara recreation that made the previous games stand out.

Is this confirmed already? I wanted to make the yearly sales thread. So we will have to wait, then.

Yup:

次回の「ゲームソフト週間販売ランキング+」は,2017年1月6日に2週分のデータを掲載します。翌週からは通常どおり,毎週水曜日の掲載となります。

Looks like they'll be sharing data for 2 weeks on that day (then back to Wednesday after that).

Also, forgot to point it out, but 3DS has now outsold the PS2 according to Media Create:

- Nintendo 3DS: 21 913 661
- PlayStation 2: 21 833 216

So that akiba's beat game bombed? Damn hope it does something in the West tho looking at what it releases around I doubt it. Shame I remember them saying it was their biggest localization effort or something like that too.

XSEED should've gone with Tokyo Xanadu instead of Akiba's Beat.

Nintendo DS and GameBoy iirc. It's Famitsu data, but those two are at 32.9 million and 32.4 million respectively. So yeah, not gonna happen.

So in other words nothing, the 3DS will not surpass any more systems.

EDIT: Fell victim of a stealth edit ;)

Ouch, that's not a good figure for Yo-kai Watch. I guess the fad for it is over and it's now going to join the pantheon of classic Japanese series that will do moderately well to great, but no longer break records like Monster Hunter and Dragon Quest :)

I think most of us were expecting less due to the poor sales of Sushi/Tempura, this kind of beat some of our revised expectations.

Sukiyaki still sold better than some of the games released in Japan this year.

Do you guys think it could beat sales for YW: Sangokushi?

I could see it happen.

Ahh Sayonara then for Japan number there.^^ At least 3DS can reach third position for that NIntendo dominance lol.^^

A little confused by this difference in tracking?

Famitsu

XB1 # | 279

Media Create

XB1 # | 1.872

Probably Xbox One had an unusual bump in some stores (due to deals?) that MC has data and Famitsu don't, which makes a big percentage difference when extrapolated because the sales are so low.

Famitsu YTD

PS4 1.683.614
3DS 1.644.882

3DS has one more week to make up a 39,000 unit gap. Can 3DS do it!?

MC tracker already has 3DS leading. But if we go by Famitsu, with the way the 3DS is selling this month it will do it before the year ends. There's still this unaccounted 2DS numbers I believe, so by default it should be leading anyways.

Maybe next year we'll see PS4 lead over 3DS.

Well, how soon Minecraft ends up on the Switch depends on how soon Nintendo thinks it safe to send a devkit for their brand new console to a direct competitor.

Even the PS4 and XB1 got Minecraft rather late.

Well I mean that's the type of thing you would probably be concerned about but... what exactly would Microsoft do with that information? Unless there's some kind of killer feature MS can rip off for Scorpio(which I doubt).

It will be Switch vs PS4 next year. 3DS will collapse just like all Nintendo systems do after the release of the successor (for example DS 2010: 2.87 million to 2011: 650k)

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

3DS could play DS games though, so there wasnt much reason to get a DSi after 2011. Switch will be quite more expensive than the cheaper 2DS/3DS options as well.

3DS will still be relevant next year.

Agreed, and i think its still going to get the big games like monster hunter, those wont be switch exclusives until the install base is bigger.

Oh, wow, that sounds terrible. Having licensed shops in Akihabara was half the fun (much like having licensed shops in Yakuza games is pretty cool). Well, that's one game scratched off my list.

Edit: It's not just licensed shops. I really dislike the whole silhouette route Japanese companies are going with vs having regular NPC characters. Don't like it in Tokyo Mirage, won't like it in P5 and this game here I will skip.

Weird difference on XB1 tracking. MC has it up by 600 units, almost hitting 2,000 while Famitsu still has it below 500, and even selling worse than last week.

3DS is doing really well. Hitting 2M YTD would be cool.

Didn't think about BC so maybe GBA to DS transition is better example (DS had BC to GBA). GBA did around 2.57 million in 2004 and 1.25 million in 2005. 3DS will be around 2 million for this year so to challenge PS4 it would have to have much better hold than even GBA (Can't see PS4 dropping under 1.5 million).

08./00. [3DS] Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball Heroes <SPT> (Konami) {2016.12.15} (¥4.500) - 26.673 / NEW

What happen here? Nintendo doesn't have the baseball audience? Maybe legs will be good for Christmas though. Bad look for the series that just beat all expectations on PS ecosystem.

26./00. [PS4] Akiba's Beat <ADV> (Acquire) {2016.12.15} (¥7.200) - 5.248 / NEW <20-40%>
D:
Would this game really have done much better on the Vita though, or is this just a case of sequel to a weak IP. 5k or 10k, still worthless numbers for Acquire.

We have a better estimate for Miitopia's shipment.

Last week it was 70-140k, this week 90-130k.

Except for extreme cases some stores ordered more, 90-130k must be very close to initial shipment.

I don't think we're going to see anything like that ever again in the dedicated market.

You saw it with 3DS which has the record of better selling hw at December ever.

Of course if DS didn't face supply problems that December maybe it would still have the record.

Best selling games of the year so far, retail only (Jan 4 - Dec 18)

01. [3DS] Pokémon Sun / Moon - 2.923.392
02. [3DS] Yo-kai Watch 3: Sushi / Tempura - 1.355.843
03. [PS4] Final Fantasy XV - 824.959
04. [3DS] Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3 - 609.603*
05. [3DS] Yo-kai Sangokushi - 545.653*
06. [3DS] Kirby: Planet Robobot - 461.894
07. [3DS] Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS - 428.006
08. [PS4] Persona 5 - 353.882*
09. [3DS] Yo-kai Watch 3: Sukiyaki - 333.240
10. [PS4] Dark Souls III - 321.931*

11. [WIU] Splatoon - 321.904
12. [PSV] Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition - 312.148
13. [PSV] Dragon Quest Builders - 287.521*
14. [3DS] Monster Hunter Stories - 275.898
15. [PS4] Dragon Quest Heroes II - 266.761*
16. [3DS] Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Spirit of Justice - 258.757*
17. [3DS] Puzzles & Dragons X: God Chapter / Dragon Chapter - 256.580
18. [PS4] Yakuza 6: The Song of Life - 253.651
19. [3DS] Mario & Sonic At the Rio 2016 Olympic Games - 239.648*
20. [PS4] Battlefield 1 - 223.466*

*data not up to date

The list of the 10 best selling games of the year is decided, just not the order, instead of Dark Souls it's just going to be either Splatoon or Minecraft (or maybe even Momotetsu if it ends up being crazy popular)

To end what will be a terrible year we're looking at probably the worst top 20 ever when only 200k is needed to be part of it and only 7 games will sell more tha 500k units.

Great for 3ds
Very good psi nunbers
Great pokemon, Mario Maker, numbers
YW really decreased its relevancy
FF holds pretty well, the million mark could be reachable
Miitopia hold is outstanding but the game is nothing relevant

3DS could play DS games though, so there wasnt much reason to get a DSi after 2011. Switch will be quite more expensive than the cheaper 2DS/3DS options as well.

3DS will still be relevant next year.

I agree with that, but it'll still collapse quite a bit, the 3DS has sold a lot at this point.
Maybe the PSP is a better comparison in terms of collapse?

In this very moment nothing assure switch success in Japan imo

And with the 3ds in its elderly phase, New and 2ds already launched, 22 millions pieces already sold, many million sellers on the market, even the 3ds will slow down a lot next year

I think ps4 will lead the market easily especially with a price cut later on and the release of DQXI (even if it will sell way more on 3ds)

What does the PS4 have coming out next year that could possibly increase it sales more than what it had this year?
