Fighting Games Weekly | June 3-9 | Getting Put On Blast

I don't know what all the fuss is about, Marvel got a patch and a bunch of hotfixes just this weekend!

Might as well go into a bit more detail in regards to the situation in the UK right now:

A country-wide replacement to Gamerbase, the LAN centre chain which was the home of much of the FGC, still hasn't arrived. There's a lot of rumbling of something happening in that regard, so we may see the arrival of a similar service this year or next year.

Scotland is still chugging along quite nicely, although one of it's notable members, VS Affro, is moving to Austin, Texas. The Versus Scotland team are running a second major this year in the late autumn called The King of Irn Bru, which will be a straight double elimination tournament for four games.

Super Miner Battle Farm (South West/South Wales) are, as far as I know, still running Proving Grounds events in Bristol every two months or so. Very sadly, a well known member of that scene, Circlemasher, passed away recently. Everyone's thoughts are with his family.

Manchester has had a rough time in the last few months, largely camping in Goukifafa's bedroom as an interim casual location. After a lot of work, Manchester Battle Arena triumphantly returned just yesterday, with outstanding attendance for TTT2 and UMvC3. Those events will be running every two or three months, provided they are not significantly clashing with other events.

Birmingham is running another Versus Fighting next month, but as I know nothing about that scene (sorry!) that's all I can tell you... :p

London is enjoying Heart of Gaming, a FGC venue run by FireBug. They're doing events and whatnot too. Unequalled Media are also doing their thing. UKFGC.co.uk is the best place for London FG news.

NeoEmpire, the veteran forum, has returned, but the forum itself is not open yet.

Insomnia 49 is in August, and looks to be the biggest FGC event in the UK this year. Other possible large events are RePlay Expo, anything EGL do with Armshouse, and other random events falling from the sky.

SSF4 AE v2012 likely to be main game at CEO 2013, highest number of entrants so far with 'tons of international competition'.

most of you probably already saw this but here it is anyway.

I for one am happy that we'll have international comp again. It's been too long and tournaments aren't nearly as interesting without them.

I went through the current spreadsheet So far it looks like "international competition" means Australians, Canadians, South Americans, and Xian. Don't get me wrong, I'm one of the biggest SF4 supporter in the GAF-FGC, but SF4 only gets really exciting when the big name internationals come out and so far all we have is Xian.

SF4 draws bigger numbers at majors most of the time, but it's always kicked to the curb for Marvel because the audience(live and stream) gets more hype for that game and enjoy it more. Only when you get guys like Infiltration, Daigo, Tokido, or Mago out is when SF4 out does or matches Marvel in hype(OK, maybe not, but it still gets pretty hype) and stream numbers. I'm still crossing my fingers that some of those guys I mention show up.

I personally think it'd be cool if people OTHER than the Topanga guys got to make it out to more events. I found the Japanese representation in Shadowloo Showdown and in that Kuwaiti major interesting even though there were few (or none for SS) Topanga guys there because there were still skilled, reputable Japanese players. There might be less guarantees that they'll make it to top 3, but I hope more American tournaments find the opportunity to bring those guys out.

Well, not saying that I wish that the Topanga guys went to less American events, of course. :D

TAC infinites with an Iron Man avatar. Enzo?

And yes SF3 was dead. The series started off poorly with the small cast and while it grew in terms of popularity with a vocal minority, its mainstream/commercial success was already doomed.

It is part of the reason why I think SFxT won't have much of tail despite being a good game. Well that and eventually the Tekken licensing is going to expire and it'll get pulled from Steam.

We can only rely on the sponsored Japanese players to make it out, which means Daigo, Tokido, Mago, and Momochi. As much as we may want to see guys like Uryo, Haitani, or Kazunoko, those guys aren't coming because they either have to pay their own way or have their expenses taken care of by the TO. And the US scene has pretty much moved beyond flying a big name out at this point.

Myself personally I would love to see Jyobin. I love watching his online matches and part of me really wants to see if he would still actually play the way he does online at a offline tourney with a sizable cash prize.

Lol, I don't want Haitani to show up because he plays Rufus and I hate watching Rufus vs Rufus. :p

I have a question. I remember a couple of years ago a lot of Japanese players were coming over to America for tournaments but it doesn't seem like they come over anymore. What happened? Are they not playing as much anymore? Are the prize pots lower?

UMvC3 happened. It stopped making sense for TOs to pay for sending Japanese players over when people pretty much stopped caring about AE. Think most of these Japanese players stopped caring about AE too and don't have much motivation to travel over to US tourneys too.

America leveled up and AE hype died down.

This is why i hope Chris G kills and buries Marvel for good at EVO.

are we all gonna start playing doa5

I might. It'll be interesting to see how f2p works out and whether it creates an ever changing meta game due to the rotation of characters or does Hayabusa/Kasumi usage skyrocket because players know the core characters will always be available. ie. Afraid to spend hours learning Akira then attending a tourney where he hasn't been unlocked.

Or in Marvel terms. The Shuma Gorath.

anybody here run sf4 on pc? would like to get some more practice outside of weeklies. I've been playing rose, but thinking about a tier whore side character. It's between makoto, adon, fei, and sakura. Obviously sakura/fei would be the better choices, but I do like makoto and adon. I think overall im leaning towards makoto.

Lots of folks run PC here , just ask Kadey.

For one DOA char and an extra dollar- you can buy the base version of VF5FS. Yet we aren't seeing a huge rush of VF players.

Even if Chris G "kills and buries" UMvC3 for good AE's fate is pretty much sealed, the game has run its course and nothing can revile its hype to the level it once was. The upcoming patch is going to do nothing but accelerate its death even further, watch lots of people getting salty once the patch notes are out. SF4 just left too many questions concerning its art, its wakeup guessing game gameplay, its ridiculous damage scaling, its matchup fighter, etc that needs to be answered by a SF5 but which Capcom gives no indication of interest in making.

You seem a little biased.
Isn't AE the game with the most tournament entrance still?
The last topanga league was still hype as fuck, way more than Marvel is nowadays. The "problem" with AE is that with time we now only accept to watch extremely high quality games.

I don't mind the idea of an F2P version but I should be able to pay for all the characters at once if I so desired.

Marvel and AE get similar entrants and similar viewers.

I guess players have been threatening to quit Marvel after Evo, is that where the whole "dying" thing is coming from? That would be a shame, considering ChrisG is starting to soften up a lot.

From what I've seen in the patch notes, I haven't seen anything that makes me think SF4 will solve what makes folks get tired of it. That said, we haven't seen general system changes, which is the most important thing.

I doubt there will be a sf4 general balance change. People want unblockables gone, but I don't think capcom/ono want to spend that much time on trying to fix them. I think it'll just be an update just like ae 2012 was.

Also thanks for the suggestions. And if you guys want to watch jap sf4 there is a show called yubiken I believe on youtube that does high level sf4

Scorpion trailer for Injustice. Was posted in the Injustice thread already, just throwing it in here for any interested.

The Jim Lee Scorpion design reminds me of how tragic it is that we never got an alternate costume set for MvC3 with Capcom characters redesigned by Marvel artists and Marvel heroes with designs by the Capcom artists. I really like seeing the outside take on the characters in this game (not that I don't want classic DLC).

I'm sure tournaments will have the full version, shouldn't be a problem.

Very curious to see how this turns out, could really help boost the userbase. I'd rather play against players using certain characters than no one at all.

Should definitely help getting those interested that wouldn't have bought the full game otherwise. Getting a base game and a character or two that you like sounds pretty damn appealing imo.

Ah, bummer. Saw the tweet and hoped it meant that some of those guys were coming over. Oh well. Still enjoy watching SF4 more than Marvel, Valle's matches at UFGT were the best (non-Lethal League) part of the weekend.

Very disappointing, hope more are on the way, especially from Japan.

At least KOF seems like it will deliver yet again in this regard.

edit: I got these rumors from a friend's source, I do not know where the picture originates from. I do not know if these are legit at all but the games listed has been extremely plausible judging from famousmortimer talking about a few of them. So this should be treated as a fake, I don't want people running around treating it as a prophecy cause it might turn out to be fake at the end of the day. Then again this is E3 season, what else is new?

It begins....

MvC4 for PS4. Into my veins.

Will be very excite for the possibility of tutoring players for E-SPORTS CASH, the share button feature and streaming support. So much potential.

How I hope it's legit.

Darkstalkers Reborn (Wii-U Exclusive. Funded by Nintendo, Dimps + Ono)

This is terrible though, and makes me doubt the entire list.
