50 Books. 50 Movies. 1 Year (2014).

I'm nearly done with my 2013 challenge (3 movies left, don't close that thread before I celebrate!), but I think I'll sit this one out.

50 books is not a problem for me, but watching 50 movies keeps me from catching up on TV series, so I barely watched any this year. On the plus side, I burned through significant parts of my DVD backlog!

Good luck to those participating for next year.

But my original personal goal for 2014 for books was going to be just 1 per month. :|
Well, that doesn't sound so bad! That's a good goal to be honest. It's my understanding that this is basically a literary 5k, where it's not about winning but simply being a part of the journey and seeing how far you can push yourself. Obviously it would be great to win though lol.

50 books in a year?

lol wut.

Ever since I discovered reading in 2010 I have been reading pretty much nonstop. So much that I have even made it to 97 books this year and am trying to get to 100: https://www.goodreads.com/review/stats/4725979-abby-cooley (Yes I know I read mostly YA novels. And yes, Christopher Pike is my favorite author.)

My actual goodreads profile (Link above is just the amount of books I read each year: https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/4725979

So I can do 50 books no problem.

50 movies on the other hand...I really dunno lol. We shall see I guess, but I wouldn't count on it. I'll try though.

I will use this post as the central post where I update with my progress. I'll use the official format below the next time I update in January.

Do comic books count? I got a huge Judge Dredd collection lately. I could very realistically make this challenge if that counts.

Covered in the OP and two of three times already in this thread. I wasn't kidding when I said that was the most common question we discussed last year.

If you're talking individual comics, then absolutely not. If you're talking trade paperbacks, then maybe (I say no, but that's just, like, my opinion, man). How many issues are you talking about?

Well, that doesn't sound so bad! That's a good goal to be honest. It's my understanding that this is basically a literary 5k, where it's not about winning but simply being a part of the journey and seeing how far you can push yourself. Obviously it would be great to win though lol.

Good attitude and approach. I'll just add that this is definitely doable if you put in the effort.

50 books in a year?

We have a member who is well beyond 200 books in last year's thread. I try reading a lot but that's an impossibility for me with a full time job and family to love on and care for. People have different priorities and time management skills, as well as vastly different amounts of "free time."

The movies were more of an effort for me than the books, for the record.

The old rules state that you can't have read more than half the book before the start of the new year for it to count.

Exactly. Covered on the first page:

The ruling here is if you're under 50% done with the book when the new year hits, finish it up and count it. I'm not telling you to purposefully stop reading at the halfway mark to spring-load a book for the challenge, but that works.

I'm going to try to keep on track with this but man it's hard with books. I don't know how people read 2-3 books week while also having a full time job, unless you can read at work and ignore other hobbies. That seems impossible to me.

Do people have any tips on how to read faster, while simultaneously being able to retain/recall the information so it doesn't just disappear?

I'm moving to a new state and starting a new job, but I love reading and I love movies, so this should be great.

I will be eschewing a quantitative review system and instead give the movie/book a new title that better suits what I think of it.

Lets do it.

Pretty sure a book a week will be impossible but I'll try my best. The movies should be fine though.

I wasn't here for the previous years, but how common was it for people to count long books as 2 books?

Something like The Way of Kings comes in 2 books in some places, so I can see that being more than okay, but I have plenty of books at around 650 pages or so. But I don't want to count them all as 2 if nobody really did that previously, even though the OP says it's acceptable.

Hopefully this thread can push me to read more. I have 13 books on my Kindle and only managed to read 3 last year. Letterboxd encouraged me to watch more movies this year (98 from when I signed up in May).

We had a handful of people do it, and there's no shame in it. Why not start out counting them singularly, then readjust if you find yourself coming up short later in the year?

Speaking of which...that book is utterly phenomenal and I'm eagerly awaiting the sequel in March.

What's the rule of thumbs for plays that are split into two books when neither of them exceed 200 pages, i.e. Angels in America?

Angel is being combined into one book now rather than two parts (paperback just came out, hardcover next month).

I'll go for it, I picked up a kindle paperwhite (highly recommended) about 6 months ago and havent had too much trouble reading books, but I have always had a hard time watching movies.

Instead of "small reviews" I am going to do back of the box quotes!

Books
  • Michael Connelly - The Gods of Guilt ★★★ This is the 5th Lincoln Lawyer Novel and while it was good, it was not my favorite by any means, just felt long and drawn out, very slow compared to his other novels. The ending felt very Deus Ex Machina though :(
  • Michael Lewis - Moneyball ★★★★ An entertaining novel about the makings of a baseball team! I feel the struggles - Love a Twins fan
Movies
  • Brian's Song (1971) ★★★★ This was a made for TV movie, that deals with a NFL player who has cancer, pretty good movie though. A true story as well
  • Catfish (2010) ★★★ The TV show with the same name is based around this documentary. Do you truly know who you are talking to on the other end? My Mom and girlfriend love the MTV series, so they wanted to watch this as well.
  • Boiler Room (2000) ★★★★ Fast paced movie about a chop stock brokerage. Made better by the fact that we watched it in my business seminar class

Also if I started a book, but I am not sure if I will get a read before the 1st, can I put that down as my 1st book of 2014?

Or is it only books started and finished in 2014

I'm in for 50/50 in 2014. I have a list of almost 90 books lined up to choose from, and I know I'll watch 31 films in October 2014 as part of the annual horror movies marathon. So, I need to fit in 19 other films during the year.

Forgot I had a spot on the first page. Does anyone usually finish this challenge early?

TestMonkey was a monster and finished on 16 August. Five more of us crossed the finish line in October, two more in November, etc. If you're being diligent in your reading and staying balanced, it's quite possible to wrap things up early.

That is exactly what I plan to do, thank you!

And yes, I am very excited to read it and grab the sequel!

I posted the manuscript in a different thread and the sequel looks daunting. I can't wait!

Also if I started a book, but I am not sure if I will get a read before the 1st, can I put that down as my 1st book of 2014?

Or is it only books started and finished in 2014

In the words of the stellar Hawkeye writer: "Bro, bro, come on, bro." Covered four times already in a three page thread.

Simple answer: As long as you haven't finished over 50% of the book before the new year starts, count it. If you're over halfway, don't count it. If you're in doubt, follow your conscience. If you're still in doubt, just count it.

Signed up last year, but forgot to bookmark the thread and then never updated. Would have easily surpassed the movie count, but missed on the books by quite a bit.

Let's try again...

I used to read a lot but I became lazy and this seems like a perfect opportunity to start me up reading again. One question though, I have a few books I've started reading but never finished them, so if I would start to read them from the beginning would that count or not?

In the words of the stellar Hawkeye writer: "Bro, bro, come on, bro." Covered four times already in a three page thread.

Simple answer: As long as you haven't finished over 50% of the book before the new year starts, count it. If you're over halfway, don't count it. If you're in doubt, follow your conscience. If you're still in doubt, just count it.

My apologizes. thanks man!

Not sure if I will involve myself as much in 2014 as I did in 2013... might read more though... (im not going to have a new book done by years end , so it ends at 12... :( ill probably have about 110 movies though so theres that)

I will try to step it up in 2014... but i don't expect to out do my books OR movies... (mainly because I am going to try to get away from the 100-200 page Novella's and jump directly into 300 page + or bust) For what it is worth, I read more in 2013 than I have in the last 3 years and I thank the challenge for that! I just need to allocate more time per day to reading... (fewer video games dammit!)

I'm in for this I think. I can possibly manage the books (my best total so far is 46 read in a year). The movies are going to be the real problem. I'm not even sure I've watched one movie this year!
