It's already confirmed by other sources. And i suppose Sony is very happy right now! :/

PUT LINUX ON IT!

This is for piracy, right? But who wants to download 50 gigs of data? (Pirates, I guess.)

Why should they care honestly?

PS2 was pirate heaven, and it didn't matter.

They don't. They still get games licensing money, and sell hardware. That being said maybe I missed it, but all I could see in the link was a reproducable UI crash, with the possibility of retrieving a ram dump, so not jailbroken.

Awesome, very interesting! Not going to jb my ps4, but its cool to see what comes of this. Ps3 cfw was pretty awesome.

PS3 security was fundamentally compromised, but Sony patched it and shrugged it off. I doubt they're exactly losing sleep right now.

I've literally no idea what's "jailbroken" about it based on that IRC log? They've got a UI crash because of the network and a log dump to USB?

I have some games that clock over that on Steam. Filthy piratey storefront ahoy.

And the PSN digital versions are also just 50 GB keygens matey.

Yeah because only pirates download games of that size.

It's not like steam exists or anything

I regularly download games that are way over 30GB in size on steam and even on the Wii U too!

Yeah, I don't see how that qualifies as jailbroken. At all.

Also, the PSP hack was almost as simple as the R4 card for the DS. Piracy doesn't take off unless it's easy for the average consumer. Like the Vita, this PS4 hack won't be either.

Ask the PSP, sold great, but games dried up because people were just pirating them.

I was never convinced that was the sole reason. Sure pirates got the most use out of their PSPs, it's easy to commit to playing things when they are free, but what about the non-pirates? I feel like they just weren't buying games.

There was lots of Wii piracy too, but I don't think that's the reason wii games didn't sell - people just didn't buy games for it. Meanwhile there was LOTS of PS2 piracy, and games could still sell quite well on it, so who knows, it's hard to say?

Can't Sony just patch it up like how they did the PS3 real quick?
Already patched by the sounds of the article and thread, needs FW 1.76.

It is just the crashing that can still occur today.

Obviously your worst case scenario is things found in a broken 1.76 version might linger today and allow for downgrading all that stuff.

Well the chat on the page specifically says it DOESN'T need 1.76, it says it's repeatable on newer firmware

No, that's the crash, not the jailbreaking.

The article is on about two things, some guy who can crash the system on demand (which is very handy) and someone who has broken WebKit (the browser) out of it's sandbox by the sounds of it.

Could you please explain why crashing on command is useful? This stuff is super fascinating.

How is that different from downloading or installing normal retail titles? They're the same size.

Everyone who buys their PS4 games digitally?

Are you still on dailup or something? Everyone who buys digitally regularly downloads that amount of data.

Wait, you're right. I just downloaded 40 gigs of Shadow of Mordor on Steam the other week. Does that mean... I AM A PIRATE? AARRRRRHHH!

I admit, I have no idea how piracy works.

Sweet, very nice. Hopefully it will work on the current firmware whenever there's a public release but considering this is based on webkit (which apparently has been fixed a while ago), I doubt it. Still awesome! Can't wait.

If anything, PS4 sales will skyrocket in the countries where the software is very expensive.

Only the JB only works on an ancient firmware, one you won't find on PS4s at retail anymore.
Of course that can change in the future.

Well I'm only going by the article and the associated thread, but they're talking in that chat log about some USB device and the guy seems to suggest they can attempt to dump stuff to it when it crashes.

As you can imagine, if that method is true and you want to fiddle about then you'll want to be able to crash on demand rather than hoping you encounter one to get the info whenever you want it.

Also works on latest os version.

No it doesn't, yet. All the articel states is that it might work on newer ones too, but nothing confirmed.
Of course this means they have an in into the OS and can figure out its inner workings, which will likely lead to new inroads for newer firmwares.

Exposing the sinister cartel of retailers who allow companies to pay for advertising space.

It works on 1.76. That version was superceded by 2.0 on Oct 8, 2014. So unless you haven't upgraded your PS4 in the past 14 months, this jailbreak is useless.
