Nintendo Quarterly Financial Highlights: 0.94M 3DS, 0.22M Wii U, Amiibo down 60% YoY

Nintendo said:
During the three-month period ended June 30, 2016, for Nintendo 3DS, Kirby: Planet Robobot, which was released globally, showed steady sales. In the U.S., BRAVELY SECOND: END LAYER was released, and in Europe, Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright/Conquest was released and both titles got off to a good start. As a result, the worldwide sales of Nintendo 3DS hardware and software were 0.94 million (7% decrease on a year-on-year basis) and 8.47 million units (7% increase on a year-on-year basis) respectively.

With respect to Wii U, in addition to titles such as Star Fox Zero/Guard and Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, which were released globally, Splatoon and Super Mario Maker which were released during the prior fiscal year showed steady sales. The global sales of Wii U hardware and software were 0.22 million (53% decrease on a year-on-year basis) and 4.68 million units (3% increase on a year-on-year basis) respectively.

For amiibo, the figure-type and the card-type sales remained at approximately 1.70 million units and 1.30 million units respectively mainly due to a lack of new titles that are compatible with amiibo.

Download sales decreased year on year because sales of in-game downloadable content were down.

In addition to these results, due to foreign exchange rates being impacted by significant yen appreciation, net sales were 61.9 billion yen (of which overseas sales were 44.8 billion yen or 72.3% of the total sales) and operating loss was 5.1 billion yen. As a result of exchange losses totaling 35.0 billion yen due to the appreciation of the yen, ordinary loss was 38.6 billion yen and loss attributable to owners of parent was 24.5 billion yen.

Those are some low figures, even by 3DS standards. They really need to do better than 0.22m a quarter with NX.

So they sold 220.00 WiiU consoles worldwide in 3 months?
Damn.... that's bad.

I would have thought they added any information about their mobile section.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Makes sense - most ppl were expecting NX to be unveiled this e3 and launched this year. This thing cant get here fast enough.

I still think 3DS will do relatively well this Holiday season with a price cut and Pokemon Sun/Moon though.

No Fates sales update. :-/

Also how the hell is Zelda Twilight Princess still under 1 million on Wii U?????

Didn't sell a million in either quarter it was in. Came out too late in March to ship a million, but as a remaster it'll be frontloaded. It's almost certainly beyond a million.

At 12.24 million, Pokemon ORAS has out shipped FRLG and is on track to beat HGSS. Impressive.

Software is up overall, so that's nice at least.

Amiibo Figure sales are down 60% yoy as well. That free money well is drying up.

Well in the same period last year, Splatoon was out with Amiibo along with more Smash amiibo releases, so it makes sense that it'd steep decrease this year when there's nothing out for them at the moment.

Hardware sales were pretty bad. Their forecasts seem to expect it though. Software doing quite well is pretty surprising, considering on the Wii U front only Star Fox Zero/Guard and Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games were the notable releases.

Well, I guess it shows that you can't really take 1+ year sabbatical as a company. Surviving until March 2017 won't be that easy. Pokemon will help, but that's not enough.

Not only that, but it sold 400,000 this quarter, which is way up YOY compared to the 330,000 of last year.

And this BEFORE the Pokémon GO effect.

Seriusly, it should sell over 14 million lifetime. :O

Abysmal as expected. Even the amiibo business looks like it's collapsing (I don't have the previous number in mind)?

Well given that they really didn't release the rest of the Smash line yet, i'm not surprised at the amiibo stuff at all.

Also AC was a failure.

All this tells me is that Nintendo is going all in on the NX. I expect a bunch of amiibos and an impressive first party line up. The Wii U era has ended and was an absolute disappointment to Nintendo. This year is gonna be rough for them financially.

NX is factored into the full year forecast already they just wont release numbers as they say things can change

Amiibo crashing already? Nintendo has to step their Amiibo game up with the NX and find fun, interesting ways to use Amiibos in game or else this is gonna be a short lived venture.

They are in a tough place. Most gamers are buying them as collector toys not game things. Nintendo however wants them to be a game thing so in turn they really can't exploit amiibo to their potential.

Nintendo 3DS hardware shipments:

Apr. - Jun. 2011 - 0.71 million
Apr. - Jun. 2012 - 1.86 million
Apr. - Jun. 2013 - 1.40 million
Apr. - Jun. 2014 - 0.82 million
Apr. - Jun. 2015 - 1.01 million
Apr. - Jun. 2016 - 0.94 million

Nintendo 3DS being basically flat worldwide (-7% year-on-year) and down by 12.5% in the West aren't bad news. Last year they had released just a month and a half before the first quarter of the fiscal year ending 2016 the New Nintendo 3DS model in the West.

Apr. - Jun. 2016

Japan - 0.31 million (+6.9%)
Americas - 0.35 million (-12.5%)
Others - 0.28 million (-12.5%)

SSB4 combined outsold SSBB

Super Smash Bros. Brawl — 13.10 million pcs.
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS — 8.23 million pcs.
+
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U — 4.90 million pcs.
=13,13

All you have to do is compare Amiibo releases this year to last year.

Last year you had the Smash Line still in full swing along with the Splatoon and Mario lines.

This year? A few smash DLC character Amiibos and additions to the horrifically filled Animal Crossing line. You also have the four Kirby figures but three are versions of Smash ones.

Also surprised Wii U game sales going up.

There's really not much amiibo-related stuff this quarter. It may not pick up to where it once was, but the last line of Smash 4 amiibos should boost its sales some more. And of course new games with new amiibo lines related to it.

Mpl90

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Ok, here's the exace number of amiibos sold in both Q1 FY 2015 and Q1 FY 2016

Amiibo Q1 FY 2015 - Figure type - 4,200,000 | Card type - 0
Amiibo Q1 FY 2016 - Figure type - 1,700,000 (-60%) | Card type - 1,300,000

The fall of the figure type should be mainly due to no new amiibo releases and no Smash strength carrying their sales (like they did in the beginning of 2015). An actual comparison between Q1 FY 2015 and Q1 FY 2016 in terms of both games and amiibo releases would be the perfect way to establish it, though.

Download sales decreased?! How is that even possible in today's market?!

Easy. Owners migrating away from your platform to others. 3DS is aging, it's not hard to imagine people have been moving off to mobile for example.

If you can keep your userbase engaged, it might be a sound assumption that content consumption should always increase over time, but that initial condition seemingly isn't an automatic given.
