The NCAA announced on Monday the relocation of seven previously awarded championship events — including NCAA tournament games in Greensboro — from the state of North Carolina during the 2016-17 academic year as a result of the state's controversial House Bill 2.

“Fairness is about more than the opportunity to participate in college sports, or even compete for championships,” NCAA President Mark Emmert said in a statement. “We believe in providing a safe and respectful environment at our events and are committed to providing the best experience possible for college athletes, fans and everyone taking part in our championships."

NCAA had all events under their control banned from South Carolina for the state flying the Confederate Flag at their capitol building, so they've at least been consistent..ish.

Mississippi still has bans, so stuff like the Final Four can never be there until they get rid of their racist flag.

On a serious note, that's the NCAA events, NBA All Star game, buncha concerts and such, that's a lot of money lost. Good.

The ACC (one of the Power 5 conferences, for non-sports fans) (I'll explain the Power 5 later) is still holding their football championship game in Charlotte in December. So far, they've resisted all calls to move it.

Looking at the list there is only one event that would bring in a substantial amount of money, the NCAA basketball tournament games. I'd imagine Duke and NC aren't too happy that if they have a great season this year they won't be awarded with essentially home games for the first couple games in the tournament.

Yep. The first round games in Greensboro in 2012 were estimated to bring in 15 million dollars to the local community.

(That said, Duke probably isn't too upset about losing games in Greensboro, not if Carolina would be in the same building. Those are road games.)

They're still despised. They're the worst.

Pretty much their entire job right now is to mete out completely inconsistent and nonsensical punishments against schools that break their absurd rules, and then insist that student athletes shouldn't be able to control their likeness and image. And one of their biggest arguments as to why student athletes shouldn't be entitled to a cut of the multi-billion dollar industry built using them is because for the most part they'd never get into college otherwise because their academics are so bad, so.... really they should be thankful?

The way they treat student athletes, the fact they are a multi billion dollar industry really off of two sports but treat those players like shit, the fact Penn State is still allowed to field a football team, their reluctance to go after colleges that have a history of putting their athletes in fake classes just so their GPA is high enough for them to play, their treatment of certain schools over another

Look, the NCAA is trying to deflect from their own shortcomings, namely allowing "student athlete" to become a mocking insult directed at collegiate athletics. Fuck the NC GOP though, they deserve it.
