Why the Food in ‘Final Fantasy XV’ Is So Damn Realistic

I've put in around 24 hours of playtime into Final Fantasy XV since its release. I can tell you that the story centers on young Prince Noctis and his three best friends/bodyguards road-tripping through a fantastical-yet-modern world in a sick convertible, camping out and having a great time being bros. The point of the game is ostensibly to lead Noctis on his quest to defend his homeland against invading forces and fulfill his destiny of ascending to his magically-powered throne, battling monsters and enemy forces along the way. But I haven't gotten that far; I've been far, far too occupied searching the countryside for ingredients and recipes. The world of Final Fantasy XV is rich with food, and the care taken to perfect it makes the years of development waiting time worth it.
"Recipes were just one element of the camping scenes, but the catalyst for our obsession was the high quality of the food graphics that the camp team was able to create in the pre-production phase," Tabata says. "In Japan, we have a term called 'meshi-tero' (an abbreviation of the Japanese-English combo phrase 'Meshi (food) Terror' and similar to the English term 'food porn'), but that pretty much summed it up. We have to create truly delicious-looking food scenes similar to those that appear in movies and anime."

The food part of the game represents misdirected wasted effort in retrospect.

They're nothing but glorified stat modifiers.

I would've had the artists & modelers make outfits for the characters instead.Or just do somethibg more worthwhile.

Most players ended up skipping the food cutscenes or eating a handful of dishes over & over again as they do repetitive hunts.

Inb4 thread turns to shit because ffxv

Anyway love how the food looks I hope they follow thru Nd make some more recipes or just a ignis book

It begins

Because they wasted more time in the food than story of the game.

/s the food looks pretty realistic... seems to be better rendered than the game due way less objects on screen.

This exactly. It looked nice but i was over it pretty quick.

I'll admit to having gotten swept up in the food/recipe system, and that's partly because everything Ignis makes looks so damn delectable. Mostly because the stat boosts are are too damn useful most of the time and extremely helpful late game.Spent a ton of time ingredient hunting.

It all looked photo scanned, so that doesn't really surprise me.
They do have the look of something capture with that 123Dcatch app, they probably used photogrammetry as a base, touched it up, and did some rigging to do stuff like the jiggle effect.

I've only just started, but even the toast is just pornographic.

Every little bit of the crumb shown in beautiful detail with the shimmer of butter sinking in on top. The way it just lays there on the plate.

I mean, Muramasa, Dragon's Crown and Odin Sphere are crazy with food detail, but this is just pure pornography. The fact that every dish is set with mood lighting just makes it so much more obvious.

I never felt like I had a real reason to explore this aspect of the game. Stockpiling exp and going to a hotel that gives 1.5-3.0 times the exp. was a much better choice. I probably won't use the feature again until I've stockpiled enough exp to reach level 99. Problem is, I'll probably be burnt out by then.

Wasn't this the same team that spent weeks rendering a rock?

well, the dungeons in this game look amazing thanks to that xD

The food detail was simply of superb quality in this game. Some of it even appeared to have physics as well.

It was mostly stealth advertising.

I love in-game food more than some dumb outfits

No way a player character has just 1k polygons. XD More around 20k at a rough guess.
That's an official presentation given at GDC by Yoshida, the director and producer of XIV:ARR.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say he knows polygon counts better than you.
Wow. If that said 'open world RPG knowledge' I feel like FFXV would be three-for-three.
Yep. Exactly how I feel. The slide is nearly spot on, they could have learned a lot from XIV's problems.

This.

Here's what a FFXIV character model looks like:

I'd say about 15k-20k polygons. The FF artists are usually very good at making low polygons models look great though (see FFXIII). I give them that.

Dunno why i even peek in these threads

as if i don't already know what's going to happen when I see "Final Fantasy XV" in the title lol

This game is just like FF12, in a few years everyone's going to probably love it to death with all the ridiculous hate being thrown around
