Neo-Nazis Are Coming to My Town This Weekend

This weekend the Traditionalist Worker Party, a Neo-Nazi, white supremacist group famous for supporting Donald Trump and for its leader, Matthew Heimbach, attacking a black girl at a Trump rally, will be in eastern Kentucky, first at Jenny Wiley State Park for a conference on Friday and then at a rally at the city park in my hometown of Pikeville on Saturday.

Let's just say it up front, this is coal country and Trump country. This event location wasn't chosen at random and the Nazis are hoping they'll find people to recruit. They just might.

More heartening, there will be protests held at both events. They're meant to be peaceful and explicitly bipartisan, with Republican and Democrat speakers, but there are rumors Antifa is organizing to bring in people from outside.

As a prominent Trump supporter Heimbach is a pretty big target so I could see this happening and possibly getting ugly. I know people who are staying away from town that day because of this. Then again, maybe nothing will come of it. I hope it stays nonviolent. Peaceful resistance against racism would improve the image of our area, a riot would not. And I'm a non-violent guy. I come down on the side that Nazis do deserve to get punched, but punching them just plays into their hands and gives them a chance to play the victim.

I would like to go to the protest on Saturday. I was thinking about wearing my "Nazi Trumps Fuck Off!" shirt, but probably won't in the interest of the bipartisan spirit of the protest. Also, the Nazis have a uniform of black and aviator sunglasses, so they're asking protestors to wear colorful clothing to separate them.

So, what would you do in this situation? Would you go to the protest?

Well just go there. More people opposed to Neo-Nazis agendas the better. Also punching one or two wouldn't be too bad i mean they kind of deserve it.

I would go to the protest if Nazis were rolling into my town. Antifa is 100% going to be there (as they are at every Nazi rally) but I wouldn't worry about them since the protest is pretty removed from the rally anyway.

I think the one on Saturday is just going to be 200 yards away.

Cover your face if you go. Nazis have been known to take pictures of protestors then try to dox them afterwards.

Apparently don't do this. It's a toss up between possible doxxing or possible legal action.

Open carry of long arms is legal in KY? As much as I would like to believe that the counter protests will be spirited, but ultimately violence free, antifa, are rather enthusiastic about their beliefs. And Neo-Nazis are also enthusiastic, and look for any excuse.

Be safe. And if you are spooked, leave. And if shit goes sideways, run.

Protest their talking points and try and make them look foolish. Just please avoid violence at all costs, nothing good could come out of it.

Open carry of just about anything is legal. It is Kentucky. My brother walks around with a pistol on his hip.

It's extremely important that the left not cede class politics to the far-right. The Democrats are not willing to do it, and they must be replaced. This framing of "Traditionalist Workers" could be very powerful if there isn't an authentically Socialist counter message.

I'm not sure the layout of Pikeville, but from what I've heard there's the protest somewhere at the University while the Nazi rally is outside the courthouse and then will move to private property at some campsite.

That'd be good. I haven't checked in on it in a while, but this is a very small town so people are going to cross no matter what.

If you can be sure you're safe and it's in your heart to protest then yeah. I know that personally any time I am in an area with neo-nazis coming by it's best for me to avoid them. No reason for me to get hurt.

Do not do this. Pikeville passed an emergency ordinance in response to this that made it illegal to cover your face.

Penalties for wearing a mask or hood in downtown Pikeville include a $250 dollar fine and up to 50 days in jail for a first offense and a $1000 fine and up to a year in jail for a second offense.

The one I'm thinking of is the Rally for Equality and American Values. There are other groups holding events that day, but this one looks like it'll be safe.

Edit: Hmm, looks like we're thinking of the same event. They list two places on their Facebook group so I'm not sure what's what.

It would be nice if these extremist groups would turn their attention to the people that are actually screwing us rather than each other. But then again most of them aren't the brightest crayons in the box so I guess that's expecting too much.

I have no idea why people think picking fights is a good idea or punching Nazis is some sort of game now. I've had a couple sketchy interactions since the election with Trump supporters where I have been very aggressively confronted because of my ethnicity and assumed "foreign-ness." I have an concealed carry license now, and I carry a firearm on my person every time I leave the city. I think the whole punching Nazi's business/trend is celebrated by people who aren't normally going to be targeted by them. I would prefer to just avoid Nazi's and go back to living a life where I didn't have to get a CCW.

It's debateable whether punching nazis is a good political strategy, but I do think visible, disruptive counter-demonstrations are totally necessary. "avoiding nazis" isn't going to make them go away, and few liberals are prepared to face *why* white identity politics is on the rise.

I agree that counter demonstrations are great. And I fully support them. And as far as avoiding Nazi's, I'll be honest, as a person of color, I don't want to be around them. But people who have these jokes about collecting 100 Nazi scalps and such, I feel may come from a place where the consequences don't feel as real to them. I avoid Nazi's, like around Milwaukee, because why would I even want to be in a situation where I would even want to think about having to defend myself with a firearm?
