Today Sony Corporation disclosed its financial results for the first quarter of fiscal year 2017, which is the period between April 1st and June 30th, 2017.
...

More importantly, we get an update on PS4 shipments. Sony Interactive Entertainment shipped 3.3 million units during the latest quarter. This means that the total of shipped PS4 console by June 30th, 2017 is 63.3 million.

63.3 Million PS4 Shipped by Sony by June 30th; Sales Increase, but Income Drops

Sony also provided a specific breakdown of the results of the Game & Network Services segment of the business, which includes PlayStation and PlayStation Network.

Sales increased 5.4% year-on-year (a 4% increase on a constant currency basis) to 348.1 billion yen. This increase was primarily due to an increase in PlayStation®4 (“PS4”) software sales including sales through the
network, as well as the contribution of PlayStation®VR, partially offset by the impact of a price reduction for PS4 hardware which took place in September 2016.
Operating income decreased 26.3 billion yen year-on-year to 17.7 billion yen. This significant decrease was primarily due to the absence of the significant contribution of a highly profitable first-party software title released in the same quarter of the previous fiscal year, as well as the above-mentioned impact of a price reduction for PS4 hardware. During the current quarter, there was a 2.4 billion yen negative impact from foreign exchange rate
fluctuations.

Last, but not least, the press release includes the forecast for the current fiscal year – ending on March 31st, 2018 – for Sony Corporation as a whole and split by segment. Notably, Sony Interactive Entertainment predicts to ship 18 million units, which means that the company expects lifetime PS4 shipments to reach 78 million by the end of March.

The income of the video game segment is a little disappointing compared to last year with Uncharted 4, but damn Sony Corp is showing a nice face as a whole. Only Sony Pictures made a loss during the last quarter, but they have Spider Man Homecoming to make up for it next quarter.

Good thing that the PS4 is up YOY. Even if it's just a little.

It isn't though ? They shipped 3,3 million PS4 for april-june 2017 compared to 3,5 million for april-june 2016. Nevertheless, this is still perfectly inline with the 18 million target for the fiscal year (20 million last year).

PS2 probably not, PS1 yes.
It will pass PS1 if they release a cheap PS4 down the line. It has amazing lineup of games and can be a cheap multimedia system. Since it uses off the shelf parts and nothing complicated, cheaper price is possible so I can see it selling for less than 200 usd.

PS4 shipped 3.5M in Q2 2016, so slightly down by 200K.

Only a 400K increase from Q1 2.9M, smaller than the 1.2M increase in 2016 and 600K in 2015.

So last quarter we were all convinced that they did some channel stuffing to exactly hit their last fiscal year goal of 20 million and they still ship 3.3 million this quarter. Amazing.

well shipped. any numbers on sold-through?

They always give shipped figures in their financial results. Their last sold through was 60.4m in June. So we probably won't see another sold through figure until after Destiny 2's launch or after Black Friday.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Good numbers, this Holiday quarter will be really crazy for them with all those bundles.

All it needs to pass PS1 is to keep having marketing partnerships with the biggest 3rd party games, the upcoming huge 1st party titles and gradual price drops. It can pass PS1 by the end of the fiscal year ending March 2020 without going under $199.

Even with the big decrease in operating income, the sales of Game & Network division are still the strongest across the whole Sony Corp for the quarter with 348 billion yen, despite the lack of a smash hit like Uncharted 4 last year.

To give you an idea, PlayStation operating income for the quarter is slightly above Nintendo (17,7 billion yen vs 16,2 billion yen)

Another 20 and it'll surpass the PS3. It will surpass PS1 but by then I think Sony will move on unto the PS5.
They didn't release an Uncharted 4 this quarter.
If that's the case Sony has next year in the bag with titles like GOW and Spidey. And judging by the YT views they seem to be more popular than Uncharted.

My prediction for a 18M FY

Q2 2017: 3.3M (-6%)
Q3 2017: 3.7M (-5%)
Q4 2017: 8.5M (-12%)
Q1 2018: 2.5M (-14%)

By the end of CY 2017 PS4 should pass 70M units sold through.

With the Destiny 2 bundles, Battlefront 2, this holiday should be really strong for them and next year, when Spidey drops, (possibly coupled with price-drop or heavy bundling) sales will skyrocket imo.

80-85 million sold through should be possible by the end of 2018 shouldn't it?

Easily.

So what do we think? Will it ultimately surpass the PS2?

PS2 sold another 40m units after the PS3 released. That alone would put it above N64 and Genesis in lifetime sales. It was a Gen 6 system performing competitively against Gen 7 systems in the same time frame. That kind of post-gen performance isn't likely for any modern console.

Looking good to pass PS1 and Wii though.

80 a very maybe, 85 no otherwise they would have to sell 25m ish for the year (seems rather high but not impossible).

So June 2017 60.4m sold, 1st of August 63.3m shipped, so give or take 62m sold since last month, 1.3m+- in channel?
End of 2018 is 1.5 years ago, and 2 holiday season away too. It should easily sell 25 million unless sales drop off a cliff suddenly.

It will be at 90-95M by the end of 2018 I reckon.
