Maybe for hit new series Nier that shows strong digital revenue?

Square Enix said:
Games as a Service, Games as Media

“Games as a Service” is a concept that is often mentioned recently in HD game contexts. Gone are the days in which single-player games were of primary status and multiplayer games secondary. Lately, multiplayer games have taken the lead, and it is standard for games to be designed for long-term play. The terms “multiplayer” and “Games as a Service” themselves have existed for some time, but they are now being used in reference to game designs that place a strong emphasis on longer-term user engagement. We will also endeavor to develop games designed not to be played once after launch but that customers can enjoy more and play longer. In so doing, we will increase customer satisfaction and enhance the lifetime value of the games themselves.

Game play streaming has been another major trend in recent years. An increasing number of our customers around the world enjoy not only playing games themselves, but also watching other gamers play them. You do not actually need to play a game yourself to enjoy it. Watching the advanced techniques of professional gamers and the unique broadcasts of game streamers is another way to enjoy games. Watching gaming is growing into a major form of entertainment thanks to considerable advances in the online streaming environment. It is the presence of e-sports spectators that make this meaningful. Once the size of gaming spectatorship grows, gaming itself will gain value as a form of media. This conversion of gaming into a form of media is proceeding rapidly. We also have a great deal of interest in this field and intend to proactively work to turn it into an actual business.

Haven't S-E said they basically consider FFXV to be GAAS as they define it? GAAS does not have to mean MP only or even MP focused.

I feel like they've been talking about this shift for years. Really the only AAA pubs still investing heavily in SP are first party (or at least Sony and Nintendo), and Bethesda. Although considering how Dishonored 2 and Prey did that might not last much longer too.

Bleh. Obviously there are good games as service, and some love them. But SE has been one of the big modern purveyors of Games as Self Contained Experience, and I'm sorry if they're yet another publisher turning away from that...

To clarify, I don't mind that FF XV has a multiplayer expansion, but I do mind that the core game was diluted across so many platforms and continuing updates, and that this may now be the rule and not the exception.

Before the extreme hyperbole starts, just remember that they just recently launched World of Final Fantasy, FFXV, Nier Automata, DQ11 and those are all single player games. They also just recently announced Left Alive as a single player game, and of course have FF7 remake and KH3 in production which are single player games.

Square Enix is a large and diverse company that can make more than 1 type of game.

This is why I felt it was worth making a thread. They had previously said they'd be making Games as a Service, but here, they lead in with the word multiplayer and talk about multiplayer versus singleplayer and how multiplayer has become the prominent one.

Yeah, Nomura hinted at plans for both of those IIRC.
I was just joking but is that TRUE!?

I am pretty sure Left Alive won't necessarily be a SP only game. There will be MP component to it as well.

Anyone surprised? Do you guys seriously think SE will just let Nintendo, EA, Ubisoft, Activision make all the money while they fall into irrelevant? A small company can live with just a few franchise and dedicated fans, not a big company like SE.

NeoGAF needa a hard wake up on what is actually going on in videogame industry.

Yep, it's not exclusive to multiplayer.

But don't be shocked if there are online components to most of their new major games. They wanna make a pretty penny even after launch.

Best for business.

I don't think this is necessarily saying "every game is going to be multiplayer" but more that they're probably going to be making a bigger point of post-launch support and DLC even with single-player games.

KH3 and FF7 will have multiplayer and a lot of those games were greenlit before this became a focus for SE.

Going forward they will have more service elements across the board.

Hmm, how can we give these intensely narrative-focused single-player games a boost? Let's add some elements completely antithetical to that!
