On the question of whether Beyond will be a cross-platform title, Fondaumière said: "It's for PlayStation 3." Only PlayStation 3? "So far, yes."

Beyond: Two Souls has no QTEs, states Cage

VG247 attended a hands-on event in Paris earlier this week, and during an introduction with Cage, learned that the game is completely free of quick-time distractions.

“No more quick-time events,” Cage promised. “We didn’t really have a problem with QTEs in Heavy Rain and I don’t think that players who played the game had any problem with that, but we wanted to reconsider the possibility of – instead of saying to the player what they’re supposed to do – how could we get rid of this and let players define by themselves, conclude by themselves what they’re supposed to do?

Cage added that the game’s new control system will allow players to deduce what is going on without them being led by the hand through on-screen prompts.

“We still have a couple of prompts here and there, “Cage continued, “but no more than in a game like Tomb Raider, Uncharted or God of War, or whatever because all games use some prompts here and there.

“It’s part of what gamers are used to these days, but we use them in very few opportunities, and it’s not part of the main interface any more.”

The hat shots make her face look weird, but looking great overall.

^^ snow in that pic looks like a JPEG.

I like the combat. It's basically QTE without an onscreen prompt, to fool the complainers into thinking it's traditional combat.

Looks fantastic, somewhat pleased I got to actually buy another PS3 so late down the track following my launch model breaking down.

(as well as Last of Us, of course)

I can't watch the videos as I'm on my phone and reception is shit, but what kind of game is it? I wasn't able to peg it down as a genre from the initial debut trailer. I assume the combat video would answer the questions I have?

Yeah, the models looks incredible, but the snow also steals the show.

I am just hoping there is a little more gameplay to it than Heavy Rain. A better story would be nice as well.

Little confused by the combat video. They say it's not QTE but apparently everything is handled by the right stick, and the game slows down to let you know where to move it. That's...almost the same thing to me. It's not very interactive.

Also wow Heavy Rain aged poorly.

From CVG's preview:

It's the sheer quantity of goals that hits you more than anything. Cage wants Beyond to cover fifteen years of protagonist Jodie's (Ellen Page) life, across a variety of locations around America - from suburbs to city hospitals to homeless shelters to woodlands and even the sparse "Old West" feel of the America outback (yes, complete with horse-riding).

A staggering 23,000 animations have been created(Cage said he doesn't want any characters to look or move too similarly) while the team has painstakingly designed about forty different versions of Jodie spanning the age of eight to 23.

Meanwhile, another team at Quantic Dream has rewritten the game's engine to the point that, Cage assures me, will heighten the graphical fidelity "to a different level" than Heavy Rain. We're not so convinced about that last claim, or at least the extent of it; the non-uncanny character models in Beyond will undoubtedly be remembered as a significant achievement in the current generation of console technology, but so will Heavy Rain's.

There's also an ambitious new combat system that features no UI and works solely around the PS3's right analogue stick. Say if an opponent is swinging a right-hook, the player will need to press the stick against the direction of the punch in order to block and parry. The same goes with attacking: The camera gets right inside the action and Jodie's legs and fists will follow the direction of the analogue stick.

This concept of controlling actions with one stick is extended across the game. Whilst in Heavy Rain nearby objects were assigned their own button, with Beyond the UI has been purged and now everything has been minimalised to a single dot. Say if it hovers over a fridge door, press right on the analogue to open it (as suggested in real life) and left to close it.

Looks awesome.

Btw, there is something wrong with VG247 encode. Both videos have framerate problems, even the Heavy Rein combat section which was not choppy on PS3.

In my above statement I said I hope there is more actual gameplay than what Heavy Rain offered. Well, I just watched the combat video, and while it looks great, I think every movement having that slow down bullet time effect could get old really fast. It is just a modified QTE and I am not impressed. But I still want to play it for the experience.

Yeah this is barely better than Heavy Rain in the gameplay department, but I guess that shouldn't be surprising. They set out to make interactive movies so I guess I should just be hopeful the story isn't completely embarrassing this time around.

I don't know what I was expecting, but QTE :(

I just can't seem to get into games when the gameplay's main focus is that. I'll still give this a try but it will probably yet again be another Quantic Dream game I just can't get into.

is it me or those the gameplay video looks like it's running at subpar framerates? like.. 20ish..?

edit: and i notice screen tearings

That's one thing I noticed, well I wouldn't say it as harsh as that. It still looks good but certainly been surpassed now as shown by Beyond.

Other than that I'm very much liking what I'm seeing. Loved Heavy Rain, one of the most memorable and enjoyable experiences I've had this gen or ever. I'm hoping this is at least as good.

Thanks for posting these fellow GAFfer.

I can't wait to play this game. After Indigo Prophecy and Heavy Rain I'm very curious about this one. I like this type of games/Story telling and It's a good game to play with some non-gamer people, like your Wife, girlfriend, or just a friend. They hook you up with some Story and Emotional events and I like that.

The only bad thing is to have to wait almost until de the end of the year to play this one.
