PC Magazine rumor: PS4 event in April-May

Might as well make a thread about this. Thanks to junior member electro.

Expect a big announcement from Sony about its next-gen PlayStation 4 console this month or possibly in early May, a source familiar with the company's marketing strategy told PCMag this week.

...
GDC was probably the last big stage for the company to talk up the successor to the PlayStation 3 before the E3 gaming conference in June, unless Sony manufactures its own event. That's precisely what Sony plans to do, according to the source, who said late April/early May will be the likeliest timeframe for a full-blown launch of the PS4.

Prepare the Kaz gifs? Not much else of interest in the article. Source speculating MS doing E3 reveal for nextbox but he had no inside info.

Maybe this was going to be the shot back after Microsoft event that was rumored to happen in April.

Sony is the volcano that just constantly leaks magma, killing us all with delight slowly and at a controlled pace.

Meanwhile, Microsoft is the sleeping volcano ready to explode all over us at once.

I would hope they'd do one more conference before E3 just to get all the UI stuff out of the way and just show games at E3.

What does that article mean by "full blown launch in late April early May?" Launch as in pricing details or launch as in hitting store shelves?

Could actually be a really good strategy for Sony to get another hit in before MS. Sony have next gen all to themselves until MS announce anything and it sounds as though that's still nearly 2 months away.

PS4 = Sony pulling a Sega Saturn?

"It's on store shelves right now"! While pissing off all the publishers.

"Both the PS4 and the unnamed Xbox 360 successor are rumored to be slated for release later this year, in time for the holidays."

from the end of the piece.

Before E3? That seems weird.

Sony want ALL the coverage for themselves. At E3 you get coverage that is competing with everything else. This way you get all the coverage and discussion to yourself. Look at the initial reveal, people are still talking positively about the PS4

i had a feeling we might see something this month. they probably have the reveal scattered through the year. february, april, june at e3, august gamescom, and then tgs finally.

i have a question though? is it possible to launch a console like apple does with iphones and ipads? announce something and then let someone buy the console the next month or so.

Yet no reveal and the Durango is getting shit on.

Either that, or the already mentioned game specific event.
Looks like they've got way to much to share at E3 on hardware/software or they just want to fire the hype train until the E3 takes place.

Still too early to announce the price imo. Apart from showing the console, what more will they show? All we need are games, and that's coming at E3.

Countering dat MS reveal. There might also be lot of indie/smaller publisher games they could give some room that they can't fit into E3?

Yep. It's smart if it's true because it's gonna be all MS all the time after they come out.

And that's whether it's good news or bad.

In a perfect world, such an event would show:

  • System design
  • Pricing
  • Upcoming software at a more advanced stage of development

However, to expect too much is to set up oneself for disappointment.
