I created this thread because I strongly believe that

  • We should have a common place for all oldschoolers and newschoolers of all MMOs to come along and debate a wide range of issues that the MMO market is currently facing. From gaming journalism to microtransactions, from downloadable contents to disastrous launches, this genre never stops hitting the headlines.
  • Introduce upcoming MMOs of each year on the market and share our beliefs and our vision for the future.
  • Bitch, moan and complain about everything regarding the MMo Family - The boring action combat, the long wall of texts for each quest, and so on and so forth.
Believe the hype

You know nothing of Guild Wars 2 and I've never played the other MMOs you listed so nothing to say about them.

Looking forward to playing Destiny on PS4 but I doubt it will take much time out of GW2.

I wouldn't call destiny an mmo at all.

Wake me up when an mmo even tries to be as hard core ffa pvp as asherons call darktide server. Anything less isn't worth my time.

Played Star Wars Galaxies obsessively (is there any other way to play an MMOrpg?) for about 2 years.

I'll never touch another MMO again, no matter how cool it looks.
Shit's evil.

I loved my time with SWG tho.

It's not clear what kind of scale Destiny will be. The PlanetSide games are clearly MMOs for example. But so far Destiny seems more like any other online multiplayer console shooter.

Total War is as much an MMO as Diablo is. Which is to say it isn't.

Phantasy Star Online isn't truly an MMO either. Deal with it.

Everquest Next is the only MMO i'm tentatively looking forward to. It has the ideas, talent, and money. I don't wanna mention just how many interesting sandbox mmos fell into the abyss because of incompetent, underfunded devs. Mortal Online, Dark and Light, Darkfall, etc. I have hyped and forgotten more sandbox mmos than I care to admit.

Total War: Rome II is an MMO, huh?

Apparently so is Diablo III. I don't know how but some people agree.

My friends quit FFXIV for WoW so...I followed and been having a lot of fun. We even made some new characters that we won't run through dungeons until level 85. I'm very interested in Everquest: Next and waiting on Warlords of Draenor.

I've been wondering for some time how long World of Warcraft will be supported. I bought the game in 2004 and have played on and off since then, making it the most played game yet in my life. Still enjoy it just as much, and the content is always top-tier in my eyes.

How many more expansions do you think Blizzard will pump out? A difficult question obviously, because it depends on what the number of subscribers are, but still interesting to here what you guys think.

Doesn't Warlords of Draenor count for 2014? Even as an expansion for a 10 year old game it'll probably sell more than Destiny and ESO.

Still waiting on PSO2

Sega Still Says Phantasy Star Online 2 Is 'Delayed'

Yesterday, we got an e-mail from a Kotaku reader named Jacob. He said he was bummed out. See, he really wants to play Phantasy Star Online 2, the free-to-play online RPG that was released in Japan last year, but he can't, because it's not out in the West, and publisher Sega hasn't told anyone what's going on.P

Last year, Sega announced that Phantasy Star Online 2 would get an English release in early 2013. Then they said it had been delayed. Fans hoped they'd say something at E3, but the trade show went by without a word.P

So I reached out to Sega to ask what's up. Here's the statement they sent me:p

SEGA can officially confirm that PS02 has been delayed. We don’t have any specifics but will update everyone as soon as there are more details to share.P
This, as you may recall, is the exact same statement that Sega gave to media outlets three months ago. At least "delayed" implies that it's still happening. Maybe there are licensing issues, as sometimes happens with these things. In the meantime, at least you can get the best Phantasy Star—Phantasy Star IV—on Steam

Apart from that, I think I was reading early that they will release it in 2015 or end of 2014 in the West; can't really remember.

For me it's I strongly dislike THEMEPARK MMO's!

I started playing MMO's at 13 back 97' with UO on and off until 2003 when I started playing the best damn MMO ever created; SWG! Every MMO since then I just can't play for more than a handful of months until I'm bored to death. I'm hoping EQN and ArcheAge give me that feeling, or at least part of it that SWG did.

Do they have a reason to stop supporting World of Warcraft?

From a business view;

Activision Blizzard announced that World of Warcraft's subscriber base has shrunk to 7.7 million users, down from the 8.3 million subscribers it reported three months ago.

Last quarter's report revealed that World of Warcraft lost 14 percent of its players between January and March, as 1.3 million users either canceled their subscriptions or declined renewal. Users who have recently purchased the game and are within its initial 30-day trial period are counted among World of Warcraft's current subscribers.

Despite its shrinking subscriber base, Activision Blizzard notes that World of Warcraft "remained the world's #1 subscription-based MMORPG" heading into the third quarter of 2013.

absolutely not. It is like Lineage 1 & 2 for Ncsoft; if it is making money (currently Lineage 1 is still the number 1 MMO in Korean) there is no need shut it down. After all, WoW money will go to future projects such as Heroes of Northrend and Titan.

I created this thread because I strongly believe that

  • Bitch, moan and complain about everything regarding the MMo Family - The boring action combat, the long wall of texts for each quest, and so on and so forth.

Let me know when you strongly believe, but in a more positive way.

I'm assuming the OP isn't a native English speaker because stuff like this is basically gibberish:

While it is generally accepted that MMos have been enjoying a rampant of success steaming from 2012 with the first person shooters [MMofps] dominating the scene to 2013 with the massively online battle arenas [Mobas], it would be naive to assume that everything so far seems to resolve around a happy ending.

What does this mean?

I stopped playing after the big reboot of "everyone's a Jedi now!".
It thought they kinda ruined the fantasy of being a Jedi.

It was so cool in the early days to even just see one!

My exact feelings. Almost mythological how well they played the jedi card prior to the shit update.

I dropped out of MMOs after my third drop-in on WoW back in 2009. Tried TOR for an hour, but I stopped and uninstalled it. After I realized that I was actually wasting so much time on a grind when I could be playing other games with stories that don't rely on that gameplay aspect, my MMO interest was pretty much destroyed.

But Destiny looks good.

What the hell OP no mention of City of Heroes?! It was one of the best RPGs of the 1st gen of RPGs and lasted almost a decade.

It also had huge controversy when shitty NC soft closed it down but keeps Aion open?

I felt like Guild Wars 2 was a pretty damn good launch/first year, especially for a highly anticipated MMO. By no means perfect, but not the bugfest that you insist that it was. Now, I may not 100% agree with some of ANets changes, and the lfg tool took far too long to implement, but it is still fine, especially compared to some of the other disastrous launches.

SOE’s unannounced MMO “dedicated” to Star Wars Galaxies players, says Smedley
Sony Online Entertainment boss John Smedley’s extensive Reddit AMAA yielded many answers and many teases, one of which pertained to the unannounced MMO the firm has had in the works for quite some time.

In the AMAA, when pressed for details on the MMO, Smedley would only confirm it was a “completely new IP,” and that “the data is on the interwebs.. someone just has to find it.” So if you feel like doing a bit of sleuthing, by all means go for it.

He also said the game is “dedicated” to Star wars Galaxies players.

“Once we launch it… you can come home now,” he said. When pressed for what exactly he meant by that he replied: “It’s called ‘go figure it out for yourself’. ”

A bit cryptic, but interesting nonetheless as Smedley also said if there was one game shutdown by the firm he could relaunch it would be SWG and he would do “everything differently” with it.

Star Wars Galaxies signed off after eight years of operation back in December 2011 after SOE’s contract with Lucasarts at the time expired.

Not sure whether that new IP from SOE dedicated to Star War Galaxies players is still in development considering;

SOE shuttering Vanguard, Clone Wars, Free Realms, and Wizardry

SOE is closing down four of its MMOs. Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures and Free Realms will close on March 31st. Vanguard and Wizardry Online will bow out on July 31st.

"At Sony Online Entertainment, we are always evaluating our portfolio to ensure we're providing players with the best gameplay experiences," the company said via press release. "At times, as part of this commitment, we have to make the difficult decision to sunset a game so we can refocus our resources on other areas in the best interest of our company and player community."

SOE CEO John Smedley will be fielding questions on Reddit at 6:00 p.m. EST. We'll update you with the link when it's live.

So much this. SWG is the only MMO I've ever really been able to get into. Its sandbox style was so much fun to play. Tried a bunch of other MMOs and none of them have had the same draw. I miss it so..

ArcheAge and Black Desert look very interesting. By the way, if Destiny can be considered an MMO, Elite: Dangerous and Star Citizen should be there too.

No City of Heroes?

I thought it was a revolutionary MMO at the time it was released, when the only competition was standard fantasy bore like WOW and EQ2.

Played like 20 hours of ToR recently and got bored around the 3rd planet in my quest line. It just felt like I was being railroaded down a set path with literally no options in how I play other than my move sets and some minor cosmetic changes. Are all MMOs this linear and have so little actual RPG gameplay elements other than stats and numbers everywhere.
