The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt -- 16 free DLCs for everyone!

Everyone who buys The Witcher 3 will receive all 16 planned pieces of downloadable content (DLC) for free, developer CD Projekt Red has announced.

That's buying any edition from any shop on any platform and at any point in time. No small print: buy the game and that's it.

In an open letter, CD Projekt co-founder Marcin Iwiński lambasted the current state of affairs, where DLC acts either as carrot dangling in front of certain shops, or as supplementary revenue-booster at launch.

"We love games," he began. "We love collecting them, playing them, and everything connected to that experience. Every time we reach out for a new release, we expect to be taken care of. We expect support if we encounter any problems, we love updates constantly improving the experience, and we feel really special when we receive free content that gives us more than we initially paid for. It doesn't have to be huge, it can be an awesome skin for a character or an extra sword, or armour.

"Unfortunately this treatment is quite rare these days. As gamers, we nowadays have to hold on tight to our wallets, as [un]surprisingly right after release, lots of tiny pieces of tempting content materialise with a steep price tag attached. Haven't we just paid a lot of cash for a brand new game?

"At CD Projekt Red, we strongly believe this is not the way it should work and, with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, we have decided to do it differently," he added.

"Cutting to the chase, everyone who buys Wild Hunt will receive 16 specially prepared DLCs absolutely for free, regardless of platform. You don't have to pre-order, you don't have to buy any special edition to get them - if you own a copy of Wild Hunt, they're yours. This is our way of saying thank you for buying our game."

Slay if old.

Makes you wonder if these items were DLC in the first place.

CD PROJEKT RED, creators of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, the next-generation, open world fantasy RPG hitting stores February 24th, 2015, is excited to unveil their FREE DLC program for the game.

The FREE DLC program for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt consists of 16 entirely free DLCs, that will be available for every gamer owning a copy of Wild Hunt, for Xbox One, the all-in-one games and entertainment system from Microsoft, PC, and PlayStation®4, and is applicable to all versions (digital or physical, standard or Collector’s).

On February 25th, CD PROJEKT RED will release the first bundle of DLCs (2 of the planned 16) -- the Temerian Armor Set (horse armor included) and a Beard and Hairstyle Set for Geralt, the game’s protagonist. After this date, a DLC bundle consisting of two DLCs will be published every week, entirely for free. Gamers are entitled to the free DLC regardless of obtaining the game via pre-order or after launch. Instructions on how to obtain DLCs on specific platforms will be provided at a later date.

For additional details about the 16 FREE DLC program, please refer to the below Q&A and CDP RED’s co-founder Marcin Iwiński’s Open Letter.

Q: What do I have to do to receive the 16 free DLCs?
A: The only thing you need to do to receive the 16 DLCs is purchase The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. All of the DLCs will be available for free on every platform (i.e. Xbox One, PC, and PlayStation 4).

Q: Do I have to pre-order to get the free DLCs?
A: No, each piece of content will be available for download regardless of you buying the game before or after launch on February 24th, 2015.

Q: I have the standard version of the game (i.e. not the Collector’s Edition). Do I still get the free DLCs?
A: Yes. You get the 16 DLCs regardless of the version of the game you bought (i.e. standard or Collector's, digital or physical).

Q: What’s the plan? When can I expect the DLCs to be released?
A: The plan is to release a new DLC bundle (each bundle contains two DLCs) on a weekly basis, following the game’s launch February 24th, 2015. The first DLC bundle will be released the next day on February 25th. The next bundle will be available for download a week after that, on March 4th, the next on March 11th, and so on. The first bundle will contain the Temerian Armor Set and a Beard and Hairstyle Set for Geralt. The second bundle will contain an additional quest and an alternative look for one of the game’s main characters -- Yennefer of Vengerberg.

Q: Where can I find out more?
A: You can find more details on www.thewitcher.com. At this moment, four DLCs (two bundles) are revealed. The remaining DLCs will be unveiled each week after launch.

Fucking CDPR showing everyone how you build trust and value.

They might not be making money on that DLC but they sure as hell gain a fuckload of goodwill doing it.

Why even make it DLC then?

Really hoping the combat isn't as sketchy as 2. Pretty pumped though.

Perhaps it's developed after the game goes gold/release date or it is a strategic plan to keep up the marketing and word of mouth of the game after release.

Sounds like a good plan to give the game better legs past the initial week sales windows (the game will discussed upon / in the games news for weeks to come).

Exactly.

Games go gold before they are released. The developers do not immediately turn back in to pumpkins right when that happens and still have time to work on things.

Some things are scheduled, so you can say "Oh, we'll have time to finish these things, but not these other things," and can figure out what parts should be worked on after the main things that ship on a disc are done.

So they're just content patches right?

I guess calling it free DLC gives them better publicity.

Either way this definitely a good thing.

Keep people interested and active in the game and build positive brand loyalty.

See? Look at all this positive brand loyalty that is being built.

LOL, still making companies do that.

See Bioware, this is how you do it. :) Still buying Dragon Age day 1 though. I'm slightly bummed Witcher 1 and 2 isn't for PS4 as well. My PC probably could handle 1, but probably not the 2nd game. Unless the 3rd game has an awesome recap, I fear I'd be so lost in the story.

Exactly. The DLC is incredibly minor stuff that looks like it's already complete and if not, near completion. This is pretty much just for positive PR.

Still cool though. Bungie/Activision should take note.

They did this with the previous games, too, but mad props to them for not buckling under possible outside pressure.

Awesome stuff. I kinda hope they're just patched into the game at that point though. "Free" DLC is actually kinda a pain because you have to go to the store, download, then it's in your download list forever and if you delete the game you have to re-fetch the DLC (I think this last point is moot on PS4 and I know it's moot on Steam though), with a patch it's all blissfully painless and automatic (on new consoles/PC)

Either way, props to them for this. Also, nice horse armor. In my day you had to spend $5 for some horse armor!

Still cool though I guess.

Lots of paid DLC is incredibly minor stuff too. It might only be like $1 each if it WERE paid, but it's still a cool gesture.

Can't wait for my collectors edition to come in from Amazon next year. This game will be amazing - been waiting for another epic RPG in the same proportions as Skyrim.
