Tuesday, 11 November 2008 @ 14:51 Robbie brook and a few numbers The price reduction seems to have been worthwhile oneself for Microsoft in all of Europe. With a price of 179 euros for a riser model, the Xbox 360 is current the lowest-priced console on the market. Robbie brook, which cares for the maintenance department in the executive committee of the software company, supplied with the FAZ in a discussion to a few new numbers. Thus one sells for the moment European-wide nearly twice as many systems like before, the PS3 in Germany again caught up and the competition of Sony in the USA far behind itself left. There are for the moment 14 million Xbox Live user - and those are important for Microsoft, since one actually makes plus, still minus with the console neither. The money comes from the software and the Xbox Live fees, in addition the extended maintenance offer that on 19 November by the new NXE one extends. Blu ray a player is not planned by the way.

makes no sense but a damn fun read

Fork 'em, Sparky!
Good for the 360. It will finally start hitting its stride and mass market potential. It was too damn expensive before.

it's basically just saying that the sales have nearly doubled and have surpassed the PS3 again in Germany. also it says there's no plans for a Blu-Ray player.

everything else is pretty much what you've seen elsewhere. 14 million Xbox live users, they make money on the software and Xboxlive subscriptions, etc etc.

Even in the United States at the moment we sell twice as many consoles such as Sony.

That is little nugget. Bach giving us a little NPD preview there? I would say he may be referring to LTD, but he states at the moment. Then again could be a bad translation.

"He's American - he's a fuckin' donut!"

Based on the weekly sales we had extrapolated from that pixel-counting thread, this should bode well for MS' holiday sales.

And MS is lowering price in Aussie again..

Microsoft has unexpectedly cut the price of its 360 console configurations in Australia for the second time in half a year.

The Elite and Pro editions of the console have experienced the biggest price reductions, dropping AU$100 each with the Elite now retailing at AU$549 and the Pro going for AU$499. The Arcade version has taken a further cut too, dropping from AU$350 to AU$300.

Sony really needs to sue to block sales of the 360. These guys are clearly price-dumping.

Sue and then what? It would be different if MS would be market leader and would have the best selling hardware on the market...

Sony does not have case as far as I can tell..

Another interesting tidbit: They are more or less break-even on hardware cost, and expect teh division as a whole to be profitable indefinitely.

Doesn't that involve (among other things) selling below the cost of production? If so, how do you know that's the case?

Sony would never win that suit. They were selling at a much bigger loss than Microsoft at launch.

Corrections and summary (some things have already been mentioned):
-360 doubled its marketshare (can't be, he probably refers to sales) in many European countries, not all of Europe
-360 has overtaken PS3 in Germany again (which means PS3 had indeed overtaken 360 before, strange that we didn't have a press release or something)
-360 sells double of what PS3 is selling at the moment in the US
-They sometimes make money on hardware, sometimes they lose money on hardware (when being asked if they make a profit at 179€). Hardware is a "neutral" market for them. I guess they lose a bit at the new price point again
-With the exception of Primetime everything which was promised will be ready for the launch of NXE
-They make the most money out of XBox Live with subscription fees
-No plans for BR (too expensive for consumers, doesn't benefit gaming)

Headline:

Microsoft: "Die PS3"

SovanJedi

provides useful feedback
I did notice as I went to buy Gears of War 2 on Saturday
and being refused because I was asked for ID to prove my age and didn't have any, despite the fact that I'm 27 and don't look anything like a pimply teenager
that there was an absolute fuckton of Xbox 360 stuff being sold. Mostly the cheap units and Guitar Hero/Rock Band. I think someone bought Fable 2 as well. It was almost on par with the Wii stuff flying off the shelves.

Interesting note as well.

Being the first of the two out of gate obviously is having it's benefits now. Price leverage is clearly something MS will almost always have the upper hand on this gen.

That's what the OP should have been.
