Nintendo demoed Switch 2 to devs at Gamescom | Sources Claim it runs Matrix UE5 Demo With Comparable Graphics to PS5/XSX

Lol sure, the same way Switch could "run" DOOM and Witcher 3.

These things are scalable, the talk about it matching current gen visuals is hyperbole.

I really doubt Switch 2 will achieve visuals that are in the same general neighborhood as PS5/XSX and still somehow have decent battery life at a market friendly price, but if so this will be the fastest and highest selling console of all time in every region.

Does seem unlikely, but if it does really have dlss 3.5 it might be frame generation thst saves the day, the perfomance bump from this has been shocking. Combine that with decent scaling from 1080p and maybe, just maybe it hits far above its core power.

Oh, so better specs are a good thing now?

Pretty sure you’d have been skinned alive and thrown in a salt pit by Nintendo fanboys for suggesting the Switchs spec was always weak and that they could really benefit from better hardware in future prior to, oh I dunno, like right now in this thread.

Obviously if this wasn’t the news and the news was that the Switch 2 was relatively underpowered again this thread would be flooded by Nintendo fanboys saying “good, Nintendo games are beyond spec, in fact here’s 10,000 words on why this low spec is sheer brilliance”.

We both know that.
I dunno for other Nintendo fans, but for me better specs were always better. I just deal with the fact that what we get is what we get, Switch still has amazing games on it.

No doubt about that. I’m not talking about the quality of the games.

I take your point but the zealots do say that sort of thing. If this was announced as having a Pentium 2 I think you’d see them saying “here’s why that’s a good thing…”.

Fingers crossed this is powerful. I’ve really wanted Metroid Prime 4 to not be hamstrung by low specs.

I think we can all agree that Nintendo achieved impressive things with that last spec, but I just really want to see them be able to really spread their wings in a spectacular way this generation.

After the Wii and the Switch, it feels like time for Nintendo to go back to some serious power.

I think the fans want to be realistic. I think the Switch was sorta capable, I played Switcher 3 and I enjoyed it on the system. And other ports of the sort.

I just prefer to have one platform, and graphics are nice and pretty but for me it's about gameplay.

I don't get why people are so assblasted that Nintendo has a comparable level of power to its competition again, as if the SNES/N64/GameCube never existed.

With the diminishing returns on graphics in recent years, it was inevitable that they'd finally catch up in the price range they're comfortable with. If the new Switch is as/more powerful than PS4, it can absolutely run Unreal 5 caliber games @ 720p and they'll look incredible on an 8" screen.

130+ million Switch owners, and now Nintendo will be receiving every major third party release. This could be the biggest seismic shift we've seen in the market in 30 years.

I really don't see the point of using RT on a small 7 to 8in screen, TBH.

But nice to have for docked mode, even if its likely to cripple framerates unless used very sparingly.

One funny thought I had was that the whole Nintendo fanboy line of “specs don’t matter” will completely vanish if this actually turns up to be powerful, lol.
That's an oversimplification of the general idea that games can still be fun to play and visually pleasing without necessarily pushing tech in the same way something like Microsoft Flight Simulator or Cyberpunk 2077 does. Switch 2 will still be "underpowered" when compared to the PS5 and XSX, but if they can edge a little closer in the parity department that opens the door for more third party titles and could enable Nintendo to do some more advanced things in their games they otherwise wouldn't be able to without major sacrifices to framerate.

Just like back in the day there was a big change of tune when games that were previously only on other platforms and dismissed as “violent” and mediocre, suddenly became cool great “mature” games when they came to the N64/GameCube.
I don't recall this type of debate ever occurring among the consumer base. The senate hearing on violent video games and their psychological effect on players targeted both Nintendo and Sega.

I really don't get what's so unbelievable for people to imagine that the Switch II would be close, or even better, than a PS4pro.
The Switch 1 was already an "Xbox360 pro", with a more modern architecture even.

Considering that mobile hardware has progrssed comparatively faster, considering that DLSS is not available for other consoles, and considering that there are diminishing returns to improving visuals, having a Switch 2 capable of running the Matrix demo in decent conditions should be the floor for the new Switch. In the end, it will still be about 1/3 of a PS5, but DLSS will help bridging the gap.

Also, Microsoft did Nintendo a solid by making the Series S, but the new Nintendo Switch being a success could also help the Series S in return. Good stuff all around, I'm looking forward to next year.

Lol it absolutely happened and multiple times. It’s just standard fanboy behaviour.

What I’m talking about had nothing to do with any senate hearings btw.

What happened was that the zelaous fanboys would screech at criticism that Nintendo platforms didn’t have certain games or certain types of games.

They would dismiss and downplay these games and say they weren’t interested in them anyway. Later when specific games or said types of games appeared on the Nintendo platforms, it would be widely celebrated as good for the brand (showing the strength of the platform) and the games themselves would be praised. All the earlier hostility and pretension that these were bad games just vanished.

Don’t tell me it didn’t happen because I was on the forums back then and I remember pointing this out with “wait you all said these games suck and Nintendo doesn’t need them”.

It’s just a lesson in for fanboys never change. We all know that exclusives for any platform will get dismissed by the hardcore fanboys of the platform without said games.

Only later if they’re eventually ported will some of those people acknowledge that they’re good games that are good to have on the platform.

What would the Starfield discussion be like now if it was a PS5 exclusive? The Xbox fanboys would be attacking it, mocking it, shitting on Sony.

And if it was multiplatform? Quite a different discussion around the game too.

This is coming out probably 3+ years after Steam Deck and current gen consoles, and Steam Deck is roughly PS4 spec right? Add Nvidia’s latest tech and DLSS and it’s totally plausible this can be in the ballpark.

And given what Nintendo can squeeze out of the Switch, their next gen stuff should look bananas. If BC is in I’m in day one

Don't care about any of this until Nintendo decides to get their head out of the fucking sand and add a real account wide achievements system. I refuse to really play their games (except for Mario and Smash) due to a lack of proper achievement system.
God I hope not. I hate getting pop ups unrelated to my gameplay experience. I don't understand what's the point of that system, the game can give you goals.

It’s fine if they can be turned off system wide or title by title.

Achievements for rare/odd things can be fun. I’ve actually grown to find achievements very interesting in terms of them deepening my understanding of how people actually play games.

I’m often shocked by how few people get to X point or complete X task in whatever game I’m playing.

Hope we get to see those tech demos and the console specs, sooner, rather than later.
I hate tech demos they never seem to match the reality of the systems. Didn’t Zelda have an awsome tech demo with great lighting and more in that castle with a spider fight?

And while botw released it was no where near the same level of attractiveness

My hope is that the Switch 2 will ship with a dock that enhances the games for TV use, whether its an upscaling chip like DLSS or additional GPU hardware. It wouldn't have to be that powerful, just sufficient enough to output 1440p with some anti-aliasing and basic anisotropic filtering, two things that have been a rarity in most in-house Nintendo games. Something between the PS4 and PS4 Pro would be fine, I think.
I've been on team eGPU for a while now. On mobile it uses its internal GPU, and on dock an internal. Sell the eGPU dock as a pro model and call it a day. Frankly I'd love it if they sold a tv only version since I never used my switch as a portable and so most of its parts were a waste of money for me.

Fair enough. I’ve never cared about that. I don’t chase achievements ever really.

But when achievements pop up I am usually curious about the stats behind them. X percent of players unlocked this.

I also like when there’s whimsical achievements for pulling off rare things, or stuff that is light hearted jokes.

I got a very low% percentage one in Outer Wilds the other day and it made me smile as it took a while and was a cute video game reference.

You can turn off notifications on Xbox and ps5 lol. It's called not being lazy and going into the menus. The point is that it gives you something to chase and show off to other people and your dedication. It's ok, I understand your point though, not everyone was meant for greatness ;)

I would cry like you as well if I was shit at video games.

Being given something to chase is for pussies, real men set their own goals (100% completion)

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
if switch 2 is really that powerful, sony should attempt a handheld "PS5" just to play PS1,PS2,PS4 and PS5 games. Would be cool.

Remember that this demo can be easily downgraded in things here and there to run on a weaker hardware

Still, can't wait to play Mario Kart even prettier as already is

Tough to do with a mobile first chip. Especially given that Nintendo hates selling consoles at a loss & wants to keep it cheap.

If it can run the Matrix demo, even assuming it's scaled down, perhaps devs can make PS5 level games work with some effort. Perhaps it suggests it does have 16 GB.

Similar to PS/X demo?

So Switch 2 will be around 10-12 TF? There is no way Nintendo's next system will be that powerful. Nintendo also likes to make good profits on hardware right off the bat too, which makes them want to go with less costly hardware to ensure the retail price isnt in the Sony/MS range.

doubt some of the details. and as I've said before, always been high odds to the point of being just short of 100%, that their next device has a good chunk more power. It's not a wii U to Switch move ie a console to a handheld. it will be another 3ds to Switch move.

I would like to see Nintendo back in the vfx fight...

But I think alot of people are setting themselves up for disappointment.

How many times have we had "insider sources" on a new gen console that turns out to be completely bogus and waaaaay above the console we actually got.

Will say I had the though that Nintendo could do a "Switch 2 Home"... plays same games as the handheld but at higher performance (and costs more). The reason I think this is at least theoretically possible is because it's clear that NV wants to get into the PC laptop (desktop?) space so the chip might be there.

Feels very un-Nintendo to do something close to this though.
