Sony hikes up PS5 pricing in April: PS5 – $649.99, PS5 Digital Edition – $599.99 PS5 Pro – $899.99, Portal $249.99

its because GTA 6 , they know that the best place to play is Ps5/ps5 pro so people will buy it to play one of the most anticipated games of all time

lol wut...

I think console gaming might be finished, guys.
I don't see PC gaming fairing any better either. Price increases already happened and will continue.

They're conditioning people for the price of the PS6.
"Oh look it only £150 more then the PS5 Pro, it's a bargain"
And that's if they don't raise the price again.
It really is the worst generation.
"Hey, its half the price of Magnus! $1000 is a great deal!"

No one is buying a game console, especially an Xbox, for $1500. Kids dont want that shit... they'd rather have a tablet or phone at that price. $300 consoles was a way to get into kid's bedrooms and get them hooked on gaming. Those days are dead.
Of course not. These are luxury devices for a shrinking audience.

Hah, all those posts about how Sony can absorb this, or memory won't affect consoles looks a bit stupid now.

Those increases are fucking ridiculous.

The pro is gonna cost $1250 in Canada, nobody's gonna be buying that.

Sony has gone pure scumbag the past several years.

The longer the generation lasts the worse the performance of new games becomes, but at least it also keeps getting more expensive.

That is already happening. It's not a coincidence that it's pretty doom and gloomy in the console space while Steam keeps breaking concurrent user records.
Sure but the way the console industry handled this in the past (reduce price to eventually hit mainstream appeal) is now gone. I believe the console industry could still thrive even with mobile phones, Steam, etc. The problem is price and lack of exclusives. Platform holders thought it woudl be smart to give Steam all their shit (lol) and now they are raising the price of consoles to the space of low end PCs, iPads and iPhones. Absolutely no child is going to choose a console over a phone or tablet if given the option.

PS5 should be at $299 at this point to make way for GTA6 and millions of console sales. This will never happen now... the entire point of a console is literally null at that price.

Sony is not subsidizing shit either, so not sure why you felt the need to point that out about MS.
Stop the infantile flame war, please. If you believe that a company that is losing money in a given market to subsidize it's money sink device even AFTER CFO put the blame on the given device and market (a little bit unfair, id say), i have lots of snake oils to sell to you :)

Seriously, as long as this bubble keeps growing, hardware, for no real reason, will be more expensive (heck, a Rasberry PI 5 16GB is 50% more expensive here at Brazil, god damm it!)

Sony lost the fucking plot with $900 Pro.

With the upgraded PSSR, it makes it more appealing to get this console over the base if you can afford it.

I would not be surprised the hike was partly due to this upgrade.

Edit: adamsapple adamsapple Bondo Bondo Kacho Kacho If you think this is funny, wait until you see the price of the Playstation 6! You'll really fall of your chair :lollipop_grinning:

A $900 console, and that's the starting price.

You know that the starting price was $699 at launch. This is why early adopting works. You don't know what shit you'll run into later.

Have you seen those advance robots even in military? Those will need allot of RAm and pc components. And also gigantic AI farms.

Been watching Boston Dynamics for a while before they got sold. Writings on the wall imo, but I guess its another one people will have to see for themselves that the conspiracists were right.

Ah all those ai fams. The straight of Hormuz is soooo "complex" we need Ai chatgpt to figure out the grand plan for our Military geniuses who didnt think about this "key" location. I guess selling military weapons to a government you installed 40+ years ago and have called dangerous for decades is kinda retarded…

But I was told by the maximum experts here on NeoGAF that console manufacturers would not be affected by the increase in price of hardware components.

So not only are they increasing the price of the hardware, but they also plan to further monetize existing PS5 players somehow (based on previous reports).

Making my launch ps5 pro purchase feel real good. Also making it real easy to wait until a ps6 pro or maybe just next gen in general.

Damn, 649.99€ for the base PS5 that I bought years ago bundled with Final Fantasy XVI for 439€. Insane time to be a gamer.

Sony is trying to subsidize money lost on Marathon development, same thing happened after Concord failure.

Yeah limiting your audience by raising prices is the right way to subsidize money lost from marathon hahahaha.

/s

Its not its stupid sony would love to sell consoles for half of that if costs would allow it.

Fuck AI.

Fuck OpenAI. Fuck Sam Altman, fuck MS and all those other AI companies buying up all the RAM and NAND.

Memrister-based RAM needs to arrive fucking quick before AI crashes the entire consumer-product based computing hardware industries.

Nintendo also lost the plot at $450. Left the impulse buy territory and they are damn lucky PlayStation and Xbox have priced themselves so far out of the market. Switch 2 couldn't compete at nearly the same price but now... Now they probably can, the problem is $450 isn't going to last long.
They'll definitely be going up next year too.

Baffles the mind that we're in a situation where some PS5 scalpers may have actually sold day 1 PS5 consoles in 2020 at a lower cost than Sony's own 2026 MSRP.

lol, this gen has been screwed over from the beginning. First COVID shutting everything down, chip shortages coming from that, inflation, tariffs, and shortages due to AI. This is the first gen I've ever seen where prices continue to rise rather than fall. I don't see how PS6 can't be ridiculously expensive. If console gaming hardware continues to cost more I only see this as speeding up the death of that market. Mobile gaming has boomed and will continue to do so while consoles crater if prices keep going up. It's time to spend less money on developing games so that you can put out more titles at reasonable prices and increase software sales to offset rising hardware costs. Sure, Sony is more profitable now than ever, but will we see that change if consoles price casuals out?
