Can even our local @Ass of Can Whooping go that low?
In all fairness, those folk already have their PS5's, so they don't care.

I really should have bought a Pro during the holiday sale. That's looking like the steal of the century lol.

The PS5 Pro was $650!!!! WTF. How is this really possible that it's now going to be $900. Do people understand that the Pro's price wouldn't have went up $250 in just 4 months!

It probably makes no sense for Sony to keep losing money for a six year old console that is about to be replaced, and is also mature enough to sustain a very large install base and kick into ~100M by late 2027 (RIP 120M dream). PS6 is very likely where Sony will take THE huge hit.
But also, they will still be losing A LOT of money with the Japan only PS5 that not only was already being subsidized last year, but is accordingly more expensive to produce today, and is NOT having any price increases.
But the adoption rate of a console not that much beyond of the ps5pro to last the next 10 years plus after is the solution? Especially looking at the staggering long adoption rate its going to have to build up? Either they need to get rid of the pro model halfway and make the gens last 4/5 years with cross gens lasting back back two gens from the new gen.

You can't help people like that anymore. If tomorrow the newspaper said "Sony beats its employees," people in that forum would say "They probably deserved it" or "It makes them more productive."

Sony kept their prices cheap the longest, when did MS increase Xbox price to $650? A year ago or even more.

Well, Im not defending this decision but I'm fully aware of what caused it. There are lots of things happening beyond the control of these corporations.

Sony taking a huge hit on PS6 is to ensure that adoption is not slow in the first place. And they will always get rid of the PS5 Pro from the get-go, did you guys forget that the PS4 Pro was discontinued as soon as the PS5 launched?

Today is the Best day to get a PRO.

PSSR 2.0 plus still current price. If You are in the fence it's time.

Also remember pro has 2 GB memory vs 1 of the base.

All these price hikes, seeing the direction the majority of gaming is going down, man. I just don't know if I even want to keep going on with this hobby. I can afford it, but it's kind of the principle of it.

If you want to stop and get into knitting or something, you have our blessing.

I'm talking about no ps6 pro etc. at the 4/5 year maker release the ps7.

And reasons like these are why Elon Musk will be a Trillionaire by 2030. Most think his idea to build their own TeraFlab is stupid, but he's typically 5 years ahead of everyone. Vertical integration is the answer going forward. The more you do yourself, the more you aren't held to the stupidity of the world.

No precedence at all. But we'd all be lying to ourselves if we wanna act like what's happening today is normal. It's not 2006 or 2013. It's All Happening and none of it is good.
For what its worth, if Sony intends to release a PS6 next year, this is around the time when they lock in the supply contracts for things like RAM and NAND flash.

As of feb this year, Sony had secured RAM to last them till the ned of 2026. What we are seeing now is whatever the outcome of negotiations for RAM and NAND flash post 2026, so thats the deals made for RAM in 2027, which will be for PS5 and PS6.

And setting expectations for the launch of the ps6 next year.

My guess continues to be that the ps6 price will be whatever the price of the ps5pro is at the time. Maybe they subside to 799... maybe.

They should just push this gen all the way trough 2030. Absolutely no need for new hardware next year.
Yeah, I think it's very likely PS6 will be near PS5 Pro pricing. And if it has 30GB of VRAM plus more expensive newer node I don't see it being much cheaper unless Sony is willing to pay up. Pro should be decently profitable.

So $800-900 now seems to be the likely price. I don't think they will delay launch by much if any so rumored late 2027/early 2028 launch probably will happen.

That way they can get $$ out of early adopters, can drop the price if production cost drops and in 2030 they could launch PS6 Pro. We are probably going to get to the point where generations are basically dead and like on PC there will be minimum and recommended settings.

I'm starting to think the global elites are noticing the same patterns and are in a "get while you can" mode. There's ZERO reason for me to believe they think this is normal and okay. They have to know this isn't sustainable.

Yeah, I agree. They are taking advantage of an opportunity to screw over the workforce and consumer base. I see it everywhere - the job market isn't great and companies are forcing these changes at breakneck speed to insulate themselves while leaving others holding the bag.

All this instability isn't a bug, it's a feature. It's not a conspiracy theory, it's something very obvious that the elite are aware of and acting in their own selfish interest.

To be fair everything is getting more expensive these days. Not just games.

Not gonna lie, I'm super glad I was able to re-up Gamefly for ~2 years late last year before that also inevitably goes up in price. With games reaching $70, $80 and me generally not liking keeping 99% of games anyway, it's been great to off-set costs while letting me enjoy this hobby of mine.

It's interesting to see all this unfold, because if companies like Sony had retained their own internal fabs, they could've avoided the unhealthy dependencies on singular fabs like TSMC and thus kept production costs under control. If Sony still did in-house R&D on their own graphics designs like the PS1/PS2 days*, that would've also helped keep costs down.

*I know they technically worked with Toshiba on the GTE, and again with the GS, but that was mainly for manufacturing the component. AFAIK Sony themselves (via Kutaragi) did the design and architecture work themselves.

Yes, total R&D and NRE costs would've been higher initially, but that would have been easily recouped in short time anyway especially with PlayStation's market cache these days. As time goes on I genuinely think going with x86-64 was a mistake: ARM was right there, and RISC was technically there if in early stages. You still had MIPS around as well; all well-known architectures and easy to utilize.

Was pursuing top-of-the-line graphics and appeasing Western AAA-centric developers really worth leading to what we're seeing today, in hindsight? I genuinely do not think so.

But even they can't control it or stop it. I feel like if they could, you'd see attempts to stop it. This timeline of ours is going out of wack and it's clearly falling off the tracks. For anybody that's watch the APPLE TV show Dark Matter, we'd go back into the Box because this world isn't one you'd want to live in.

Pretty sure it is.
N64, PS1, PS2, 360, PS3, were all dirt cheap 5 years into their life cycle.
This is when consoles usually start doing massive numbers because of low price and large library.
Times are changing I guess.
Just another industry only targeting the top 10%.
And now it's large price and low library

This is why I just said this.....

But at the same time, not going x86 would have been a disaster for game creators. A true rock and a hard place.

Terrible times to live on a fixed budget

I changed your post to address my current situation.

I've already had to get creative to keep enjoying this hobby at its current pricing models. The further this increases, the more I'm going to end up squeezed out and stuck with this generation and retro-only games. I was hoping, at some point, to get a PS5 Pro and a disk drive and ride that well into next generation but with this price increase that's no longer possible. I can't just run out and buy a PS5 Pro or a Switch 2 (I mean, I could, but it would be a significant hit to our savings that I would prefer keeping around for emergencies). To get a PS5 Pro, I'd pretty much have to sell both my current base PS5 and my XSX, and that would still likely leave me short.

This shit sucks and I don't just mean the gaming price increases. This last year it seems like everything has spiked. Utility bills, car and homeowners insurance, medical deductibles and copays.

Good call. I just work with gamepass and buy the games that I like when they are on sale. To me a game is never worth more than 50 bucks anyway. I can't even remember the last time I bought a game the same day it came out. Between my back log, sales and GPU there is no need to, dat and date buy anything. Plus sales on Xbox and steam happen all the time.

Actually nah I bought toaplan shoot 'em up collections day and date on Xbox. Same with all the hamster Arcade archives. But those games are all like 7 bucks a pop. Ive bought all the neo geo, capcon and sega stuff on Xbox and that stuff keeps me busy as far as games go.
