Jason Schreier‬: Bungie is planning significant layoffs, Destiny 3 is NOT in active production

One thing is for certain.

Bungie is not going to see Destiny 2 like profits for atleast 3 years (or never), if they even survived past the 2 year point.

This is about the only way I'd return to anything Destiny related. Consoles don't even really need a port, per se. The original game is still a looker, it just needs a good 4K/60 patch for current gen consoles. Why they never released it to PC is beyond me. That would have been (relatively) easy money.
Well who knows what happens when they bring it to 60 fps, remember d2 was impacted by frame rate as far as dps, d1 being a legacy version of this probably is the same capped at 30 currently. But yeah thats what they should be doing is making a remaster with a smallish team. Would probably keep them afloat for a couple years with just that release on consoles and PC alone.

Fat Princess and Starhawk probably made Sony more money than Bungie ever will
Spider Man Lol GIF

I remember last year some people were speculating that Marathon probably wasn't the only thing Bungie was working on, surely they had some other big project in the works which was the real reason Sony paid so much for them, be it Destiny 3 or something else.

Nope, it was Marathon all along, the game that currently has fewer players than Russian Fishing 4 and is generating less revenue on steam than DMC: Devil May Cry (yes, that one)

Get rid of the soy and make something people want to play, it's not hard.
Edit: Who gifted me gold? I thought I noticed messages pop up at the end of a thread, didn't know if I was imaging it. Thanks, whoever :messenger_heart: .

Bungie can give Sony crazy good fps IP or revive the shit out of kill zone quickly if guerrilla is too busy masturbating with horizon. too many good things can come out of it, don't make blue point out of this Sony.

You know. The Bungie everyone loved up to Destiny 1 has been dead for a long time now sadly. They lost their soul if you will. You saw it when key people started leaving and/or being fired, etc. From then on it's been all downhill. I honestly regret buying Destiny 2 when it launched after they basically told everyone who bought it and enjoyed the content to fuck off by vaulting it. From there it just went downhill.

It really sucks too. Bungie made so many great games that I loved. Marathon 1,2, 3, Myth games, Oni, Halo 1,2,3, reach, Destiny 1, and Even Destiny 2 launch content was great. After that it went down hill.

I've noticed it's not just a Bungie problem either. These companies who made amazing content became so bloated and now are all failing. They quit focusing on fun and started focusing on how they could get more money out of people, design by committee, etc, etc.

So honestly none of this news is surprising. I saw it coming before Sony even bought them. This is the beginning of Sony finally putting an end to what was such a great studio. At the end of the day I have no ill will. I hope everyone who will lose their jobs land on their feet.

$3 billion

$3.6 billion

Imagine spending this kind of money on a studio like this.

Even the most rudimentary due diligence on Bungie should have demonstrated the company was not worth this kind of money:

- Dying GaaS with declining revenues
- No other notable IP to speak of (everything else they've ever done successfully is under IP owned by MSFT)
- A stable of talent that's a far cry from it's glory days (strong signal indicator of utterly shit management)

Even 1 billion would have been too much to spend on a company like this.

Destiny is not a merchandisable IP.

So what's left?

Marathon reimagining was totally unproven at the time (not even announced) and should have been valued no more than the idea of a MediEvil reimagining.

Also game studios are cash intensive businesses. Talent is extremely valuable but only in so far as you you can retain it.

At least 60% of that acquisition spend should have instead gone into capitalising the company, with all of the executive shareholder allocations having large proportions held back on a milestone award basis.

Pete persons is a snake oil salesman and pulled off the biggest M&A scam in games industry history.

I bet you'd struggle to value the company at $250m now if you were being honest. That $750m+ equity write down on the balance sheet was waaaaaay too conservative.

Sony's financial and strategic leadership (on the Western side) are all total fucking morons.

Imo if destiny 3 isn't happening, the only thing that I'd want from these fucks is a soft reboot of Destiny 1 with modern performance updates. I would go back and enjoy that game its been long enough.

But overall, fuck em. There's so many good games out and coming out bungie is a has been company, they'll be evaporated eventually

If sony ever tried selling off Bungie they might be worth basically zero.

Sony would keep the IPs.

So Bungie's value is whatever another would pay for their master overseer gaas expertise. Which past bunch of years is a goose egg.
The honest truth is they weren't worth much even back when they were originally purchased. Their revenue prior to purchase was terrible and nowhere near worth 1 billion, much less 3.6 billion. Respawn was bringing in four times as much money as Bungie and sold for 1/5 as much.

Buying Bungie was a Concord level failure, and the only reason is happened is because Sony was shitting themselves over Microsoft was buying up everything in sight and panicked.

I think Sony is going to have to cut them and sell them off as cheap or let them buy back their company for peanuts because shutting Bungie would be catastrophic.

At some point there was a decision made at bungie... D3 or extraction junk. Bobo the clown walked in drunk and puked all over the extraction documents then fell and hit his head and the whole studio clapped and went with the option that would end it all.

I fell out of love with destiny a long time ago but a hard reset for destiny 3 , big budget, new engine etc it would have done big numbers.

Instead they went with flopstraction shooter and to no one's surprise it flopped

Nah Activision and Blizzards ip catalogue alone was worth it, if MS uses it correctly.

Bungie had nothing really. Absolute genius con move by Pete parsons.
People always forget King as well, owning Candy Crush is essentially owning a free money printer.

They fumbled BO7 but BO6 had the best launch in series history. Overwatch is doing significantly better. ABK is still an extremely valuable asset.

Great point, completely forgot about King and Candy Crush.

I think everyone who wasn't blindly praising Marathon (you know who you are) are not surprised by it's failure and it resulting in the layoffs to come. It's incredibly sad that my favourite developer for many years will probably in the next 12 month's will be shut down because incredibly bad decisions were made there. I don't even blame Sony either, I just feel the upper management within Bungie haven't the talent anymore to create amazing universe's like they once did.

Ain't no way they've had 1000+ people working on a 3 small map extraction shooter that looks like a high end phone game.

Close the studio and mark it's a tax write off. It's better than pissing hundreds of millions more up the wall

It's kind of crazy watching all of these once industry transcending studios struggle so much. To think studios like Bungie, Blizzard and Rare were industry leaders only proves it was the old talent that truly pushed those amazing games.

I don't even know which studios to trust anymore with making a solid game and has had an amazing track record for decades…

FromSoftware?
Valve?

Don't go throwing out FromSoft's name into this. This fucking AAA live service obsession and the new norm of 5 and 6 year development cycles is an affliction affecting Western devs.

Or maybe the morons are the ones in Japan trusting the ones in the West.

When there's money on the table and people with high CIs start acting weird, negligence is not the first thing that comes to my mind.

Sony has been grossly scammed this gen, not once but TWICE. Bungie + Firewalk. None of these cases can be explained logically unless there's some sort of embezzlement.

Dont forget Firewalk was mainly made up of ex Bungie. Got to respect the hussle lol.

The reality is season 2 and 3 of Marathon will flop, just like the base game/ season 1.
I don't think it will. I think growth is inevitable...the question is how popular will the fully realized version of Marathon get?

Below is Hunt Showdown...a relatively basic Extraction Shooter that doesn't have nearly as many levers to pull as Marathon.

Sure, I'm factoring that in. I don't believe in coincidences when there's lot of money that changes hands.

If the gaming industry had serious journalism they would have chased this case from inception. We are seeing this bullshit everyday in the political news. The private sector isn't any better.
