The difference is the specific games that are releasing. Forza and fable are an infinitely more attractive proposition than OW2 and Avowed. Like, it's not even close.

I think she looks like the part. She's a retired God (giantess) with a son and the story feels would be much more about the "promise" which would lean on mature relationship (like husband and wife). How Kratos was the dad, she will be the war-sy wife/mom.

To have her look stunning not aged at all would feel wrong for the story beat. Freya looks the same and it suited her.

I'm not sure if I understand everything you're saying. But what some of the vocal people here seem to not get is, AFAIK that really is close to her authentic self (selective screenshots, and graphics engine disregarded).

I mean, photogrammetry is brutally honest. It captures a raw, 3D scan of a real human being. meaning no makeup, harsh and even scanning lighting, no digital smoothing, and no glamour filters. Accuracy isn't always "pretty" in the Instagram sense.

When people pull up Google images of the actress to show how different she looks, they are usually picking red-carpet shots, studio promos, professional makeup, contouring, and soft lighting. And ironically, those images are less representative of her actual, raw representation than the photogrammetry scan.

The developers just didn't artificially "doll her up" with digital cosmetics. That's it. The funny thing is, she's still a lot prettier than Kratos to me.

This is something the entire western entertainment industry from gaming to hollywood is currently plagued with. The men can remain pretty still, but the women need to be altered and tinkered with like some plastic surgeon male developer who goes by she/her is mad they/them will never be as pretty as the source material (actress).

It's not our "male gaze," they project their own gaze in their work.

I'm going to buy it and play it either way. I just think they should try to pretty them up in these games to avoid this kind of backlash. It's not the game that is woke. There are a lot of "staples" they have no issue removing from the series. Oh, idk, like how your character goes from good and evil in look.... why? Because the CC was tacked on and their shaders that were made from the uggo they revealed would have to have an entire ground up rebuild and that is too expensive and taxing for more fleshed out character creators that have too many variables without it designed with it from the start. Unlike the basic ones of two generations ago.

And they try and mental gymnastics world salad around it with "there is no such thing as objective good or evil". HURR DURR

Is that really the case, or are they simply aiming for a more realistic character design? Honestly, I'm not sure, it could be what you mentioned. I do think that if her moles had been removed, a lot of the reaction (especially from some users here on GAF) might have been different. Meanwhile, devs in China, Korea, and Japan still tend to lean into more stylized, fantasy-driven "cute" or "sexy" character designs. That's their thing. And that's cool too.

I'm fine with either approach, but it'll be interesting to see if Western developers shift their direction over the next few years, especially if some of these games don't sell what they need to sell.

Looks fine to me. I am sure that we would have plenty of customisable armors and accessories in the final game.

Speaking of shifted lead protagonists (male to female) in a major franchise, I don't mind having Ciri to replace Geralt in The Witcher 4,Ellie in the Last of Us part II, or Atsu in Ghost of Yotei either. Lol

However, I can understand some might not like it. At the end of the day, it may leave up to your personal preferences. I understand, not necessarily I have to agree tho.
