Will update as more infos come

Live reporting from the guardian

Italy earthquake: 6.6 magnitude shock felt in Rome

Edit 2:

Norcia, Italy earthquake revised to 6.6. Still strongest in Italy in 35 years.

I whinny my fervor lowly, for his length is not as great as those of the Hylian war stallions
A 7 can be very significant.

:(

Edit: For Reference:

Remember that initial earthquake reports can change, it could be somewhat worse or somewhat not as worse as initially reported.
Also, depending how structures in the area are built, the damage will vary.

Jeez that's big. Stay safe Italy GAF.

Edit this is from the seismologists investigating "There is no current evidence that the (seismic) sequence underway is coming to an end,"

Does not sound good at all.

Actually ""Just"" a 6.1
Still scared as fuck, woke me up in Rome.

INGV revised the report upwards to 6.5. Damn.

Casualties still appear to be minimal, as it's the third quake in the same epicenter in a week, so pretty much no one was still there.

What sort of effect is this having on Italy's volcanoes?

So far, none. This is decently far from the vesuvio.

Damn luckily it's not 7.1, but still a lot of Italian buildings are not built to withstand a 6.1 either. I hope people are okay.

That's a big one :( Hope everyone here checks in safe, and hope those that aren't are at least at peace. Heart goes out.

Glad to hear. I live in CA and deal with earthquakes 'often' but I'm old enough to remember Loma Prieta too - people should never take these things lightly despite our advances in structural integrity.

Modern, residential stuff generally is.
Everything dating back to at least a century back... : (

I live 60 miles from the center of the earthquake and thank God my home is ok. Really hard times for my people, I'm happy that someone in Gaf is thinking to us. We'll come out from this hell, stronger than ever.

Shit, I have family visiting central Italy right now. Time to try to contact them.

Edit: We contacted them, they are safe. They were in the City of Perugia which was 40 miles from the epicenter.

I'm a geologist and follow a lot of interesting folks on Twitter, so some facts of note I've encountered this morning making this seem like a very unique and unprecedented event:

As of right now this earthquake has generated the largest pga (Peak ground acceleration) in Italy's history: https://twitter.com/iiuunniioo/status/792627602611580930

This essentially means that this is the 'hardest' shaking earthquake in recorded Italian history.

Seems to be some general confusion among seismologists on first analysis as this earthquake appears to have occurred on the same fault as the event the other day, even within the theoretical 'stress shadow' that the first earthquake would've created. Generally an earthquake relieves stress within the system transferring it to other parts of the system (generally the cause of aftershocks), however, everything in this event seems to overlap.

Lots of surface rupturing:

There's also lots of pictures of damage and loss, but you can find that yourself if you want it.

I remain very, very thankful my Aunt lives in the north of the country.

Seriously though, frightening to have big ones in succession like that, glad that this one has yet to claim any lives.
