Did Game Pass kill Doom: The Dark Ages?

It felt like work. I'd get to the combat arenas and just groan. People said it fixed the problems with Eternal, but for me it made it feel even more gamey. Maps far more Serious Sam inspired than Doom. Outside of one or two maps at the end of a game, I don't know any id game that's just shooting waves in an open field. One terrible bomba shouldn't be enough to kill the company after 2016 and Eternal, but I don't have access to their books to say how the math shakes out.

Gears 4 released before Gamepass, Gears 5 released after, and therefore in gamepass.
and I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that Gears 5 sold more copies
Phil said that but offered no numbers, Gears 5 dropped out of the top 20 after its first month in North America, it entered at 7 the first month and was out of the top 20 the next month, it was the number 10 best selling xbox game the second month which is not good for a new AAA release. Gears 4 was in the top 20 for two months, of course there are no actual numbers for either game. I would guess neither one performed very well considering where the series used to be.

The one noticeable difference is that the previous two games didn't launch on Game Pass day 1.
DOOM Eternal sold gangbusters because:

1. It was a late 8th gen game, so massive install base
2. Launched during covid, so everyone was at home and bought stuff
3. Benefited from double dipping or a 2nd wind anyway due to 9th gen re-release
4. Ran on toasters on PC
5. Insanely well reviewed and universally critically acclaimed.

DOOM TDA:
1. Not reviewed as well as Eternal
2. Lacks the same installment base
3. While running well, still significantly higher hardware specs than Eternal
4. Dumbass regional prices, so less purchases. 80€ base game?!
5. GamePass title on PC and Xbox certainly nuked some sales
6. Worse soundtrack
7. The coming out of the DOOM Eternal Mick Gordon soundtrack drama.

Sure man. "Just GamePass" was the difference.

The missed a good number of sales because of a no game on disc controversy that erupted just prior to release.

The 40 year old physical media collector game shelf is my life brigade came out swinging. Pushing away the hardcore enthusiasts and their followers means there's way leas hype during the critical first weeks of release.

All these companies have to do is offer a $200 ultra mega special edition that has the buggy pre beta game code on it and these guys would lap it up. Management is inflexible however and they're going to keep on pissing off hardcores and losing momentum during the opening weeks.
