Digital Foundry: Starfield PS5/PS5 Pro Review - A Good Game... But There Are Issues

In Spain we have a saying:

Even if a monkey dresses in silk, it's still a monkey.

This game is pure garbage from Microsoft/Bethesda; you can't expect PlayStation 5/Pro to magically reprogram this game...

They launched this game on Xbox Series X at 30fps, meaning it was an exclusive title on their own more powerful console. That shows you the laziness and lack of talent at Microsoft.

This is what's considered a "good game".
It's a 7-9 game, with scores varying between those numbers based on your personal preferences.

It's not for everyone though, seen in userscore even if much of it is still bombings. If you still rate it lower than 7 at this point you probably don't like the genre, sci-fi theme, or you haven't tried the new update. There is still jank for sure. And the UI is still a mess. But user score on Steam moved up a lot after the update. Still below 70% but I think it'll climb going by my initial impressions as a long time player.
Even if you like the scifi theme you can rate it lower than 7 for its boring ass world, writing, story, music, characters, exploration, lore and mediocre combat

Yeah seems very uneven to say the least. From the video I gather that the interiors look somewhat better than the exteriors?

Even accounting for Youtube compression and all that looks like a mid budget Ps4 game.
And that's in the graphics mode.
Its procedural generation.

Looks good considering that.

I don't think so. If you're into the sci-fi theme and roleplaying this is basically what you're getting. There is nobody else doing the things Starfield are doing.

On PS5 Pro I am playing in Enhanced mode / 40 fps which I understand is the best way to play

Weird that Digital Foundry didn't make that clearer

No proper HDR support? I know the game was a little washed out on my Series X, but I think i found recommend settings to make it a little better. Did they mean no support at all?

Good question, you can force HDR container and some games with not true HDR support are doing this too (like Clair Obscur for example). But this not mean true HDR support, video shows "HDR settings" greyed out on PS5, weird...

PC and Xbox versions utilize Auto HDR that kinda emulates true HDR support (works ok in Starfield).

I keep seeing Youtubers saying how it looks better on the Pro than they remember it. So who to believe them or Oliver? If he played with old PSSR that coupd explain some of the discrepancy.

I don't trust the opinions of these Youtubers at all because all they care about are clicks and I don't trust Oliver much either. Haven't agreed with a lot of his reporting regarding the Pro.

Game is 900p on Pro so it won't look great no matter the PSSR version. It's also full of thin geometry and no upscaler can handle it properly.

On PS3, I could understand. Lots of devs had problems with it. PS has been based on AMD tech for 13 years. Bethesda should be able to figure this out.
Its still bethesda though, the best optimized version of skyrim is the pc version.

But not because of Bethesda themselves, but rather because the community came in with the unofficial patch mod that fixed pretty much every known bug.

With the huge in spike in ps5 sales this month to replace the ones cooked and killed by Starfield, Xbox/Microsoft finally have their system seller it seems.
