In Trump Country, Renewable Energy Is Thriving

Two years ago, Kansas repealed a law requiring that 20 percent of the state’s electric power come from renewable sources by 2020, seemingly a step backward on energy in a deeply conservative state.

Yet by the time the law was scrapped, it had become largely irrelevant. Kansas blew past that 20 percent target in 2014, and last year generated more than 30 percent of its power from wind. The state may be the first in the country to hit 50 percent wind generation in a year or two, unless Iowa gets there first.

Some of the fastest progress on clean energy is occurring in states led by Republican governors and legislators, and states carried by Donald J. Trump in the presidential election.

The five states that get the largest percentage of their power from wind turbines — Iowa, Kansas, South Dakota, Oklahoma and North Dakota — all voted for Mr. Trump. So did Texas, which produces the most wind power in absolute terms. In fact, 69 percent of the wind power produced in the country comes from states that Mr. Trump carried in November.

It's almost like renewable energy is really only a major issue in some battleground states, and those battleground states are what dictate policy. They'll throw the whole world under the bus if it gets them some votes in Pennsylvania.

Well wouldn't they take this as a reason why the fed govt doesn't need to be involved?

They can try but the ball got rolling because of the Obama admin. Lo and behold renewable energy is actually beneficial in many ways than just economy so once the ball gets rolling...

Just to be clear. The reason this is happening is because the plains states sit on the saudi Arabia of wind power. This is like being surprised Saudi Arabia produces oil.

It's only a matter of time before Trump comes out and says that we were all just stupid and the entire time he was talking about "clean coal" he was referring to renewable energy. Obviously, duh.

Read the entire article and it's annoying they don't point out that it's by far and away cheaper and more efficient to build wind turnbines in red states than blue states. Nebraska is actually had some of the best most efficient places in the entire United States for wind power but we have been dragging our feet.

Quite a bit of wind farms in eastern south dakota. They do things a bit different on the eastern side. Where we are from on the western side my dads neighbors bitched about his wind turbine and solar cells which you couldn't actually see from the street.

At least at the other house we have a geothermal well, solar cells and wind. Dad feeds back into the grid at the second property.
