Now that this has hit all the major news sites, it seems to be confirmed as an actual thing and not a fake story.

Jericho, Cecil's brother and the lion that had taken over caring for Cecil's cubs, has been shot and killed. There were questions of the cubs surviving after Cecil died, but now that his brother is also gone, it is likely the entire line will die.

The brother of Cecil the lion has been shot dead today, it has emerged.

The lion was killed in a park in Zimbabwe at about 4pm local time this afternoon.

Johnny Rodrigues, Chairman for Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force, said: "It is with great sadness and regret that we report that Jericho was shot dead at 4pm this afternoon.

"We have no further details but will advise as soon as we know more.'

The Cecil story was fucked up but this is like some exceptionally cruel shit.

Unless it is the same hunter from the same trip, I can't imagine how or why this would happen.
