GAF's Pleasant Genius
Keller’s departure came as a surprise to many in the industry. Only last month, a glowing Fortune articledeclared that Intel was “betting its chips” on Keller. The same article notes that Jim has a tendency to join companies and do the initial work only to depart afterward, but his two-year tenure at Intel is still short, even by his standards. Keller spent approximately five years at AMD working on Zen, from 2012 – 2017. He’s been at Intel for just two.

Whether it is just personal reasons or not, it is not ideal for Intel at this juncture, as they get close to losing their contract with Apple soon, and a stroke of luck AMD did not expect for sure. I have to admit that when he joined Intel I was a bit worried about the monopolist giant turning things around enough to destroy the rebalancing that was going on at the time. Two years at such a large organisation with all the inner politics turmoil and stress it must have is not a lot to turn things around when you normally need 5+ years.
Jim Keller (born 1958/1959) is a microprocessor engineer best known for his work at AMD and Apple.
He was the lead architect of the AMD K8 microarchitecture (including the original Athlon 64) and was involved in designing the Athlon (K7) and Apple A4/A5processors. He was also the coauthor of the specifications for the x86-64 instruction set and HyperTransport interconnect. From 2012 to 2015, he returned to AMD to work on the AMD K12 and Zen microarchitectures.
