Resident Evil 3 Brings Back The Knife Run - Details Carlos’ Playable Section.

A successful knife run is challenging and requires an intimate knowledge of the Resident Evil game being attempted. Unfortunately, knife runs were basically impossible in the remake of Resident Evil 2 because knives in that game would break. This was because knives were used as a defensive weapon that would prevent zombies from biting you. Some would argue that this made knives more valuable, but it had the unfortunate consequence of killing the knife run.

“We kept the knife inexhaustible [in Resident Evil 3], so you can use it forever,” says producer Peter Fabiano. “We're dealing with survival horror and everything is exhaustible. You run out of bullets. You run out of herbs. You run out of all the items you can use. So if you did run out of everything, what would you have? The knife. The director always wanted to make it so that you at least have your trusty knife. That’s always something you can rely on.”

Capcom went on to clarify that they are aware that hardcore fans like challenging themselves to knife-only runs, and that it has tested knife-only playthroughs in the office. The studio says that it's not easy, but some members on the team have completed the remake of Resident Evil 3 with only a knife.

In the latest issue of Game Informer, Carlos’ playable section is detailed. As mentioned before, his role in the game has been expanded, and it seems that applies here as well. His section will include more puzzles, as well as a much larger area to explore compared to the original game. He’ll also pack a lot of punch, as executing a perfect dodge with Carlos will result in a powerful haymaker to knock enemies down. It’s not specified whether there will only be one part where Carlos is playable, like the 1999 original, or if there will be multiple this go around but at least this portion seems to have been expanded a good deal.

They confirmed this a while back. They also made this claim about RE2make before it came out, which was half true. You can beat RE2make with knife only, but only as Claire (Leon requires you to shoot/use a grenade on the tank to kill the alligator, and the rocket launcher to kill Tyrant).

But glad to see the RE team still see this as important! The RE community is hardcore, so a knife-only run should be possible. Hopefully, the final game lets you down Nemesis for upgrades, but based on the articles I've read, that only seems to be the case for mandatory story battles with Nemesis.

Also, here are the screenshots from the Carlos section:

Hunter Betas take 2 machine gun magazines to kill, and Carlos can do a haymaker counter-attack for his perfect dodge.
