Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe awarded 'China's Nobel peace prize'
The chairman of an award dubbed China’s Nobel peace prize has defended the decision to honour Robert Mugabe, the Zimbabwean president, for supposedly “injecting fresh energy” into the global quest for harmony.

Mugabe, who has been accused of using systematic violence and torture to maintain his 35-year grip on power, recently became the latest recipient of China’s Confucius peace prize.

The Beijing-run Global Times newspaper said 91-year-old Mugabe had beaten off competition from candidates including the Microsoft founder, Bill Gates, and the South Korean president, Park Geun-hye.

“Ever since Robert Mugabe was sworn in as the president of Zimbabwe in the 1980s, he has worked hard to bring political and economic order to the country and to improve the welfare of the Zimbabwean people by overcoming hardship,” the prize committee argued in a statement.

Qiao argued that Mugabe had provided his people with a much better standard of living than citizens of Syria, Iraq or Afghanistan. “It’s much better than Libya too,” he added.

This line reads exactly like an Onion article

Not sure what's more ridiculous. This, or the fact that Saudi Arabia is currently holding the chair of the UN human rights council.

Wow, Robert Mugabe has literally beaten off Bill Gates.

And the South Korean president. He beat both of them off.

Ah the Zimbabwean people must be so proud! And so happy their suffering in these last decades has proven worthy of an award.. :(

Ah, yes, the man who turned "Africa's breadbasket" into a country that has a "better standard of living than citizens of Syria, Iraq or Afghanistan". What a hero.

The Confucius award was set up in 2010 as a Chinese alternative to the Nobel peace prize after the Norwegian Nobel committee infuriated Beijing by handing its annual peace prize to the jailed dissident writer Liu Xiaobo. Liu remains in prison for co-writing a pro-democracy manifesto called Charter 08.

Previous winners of the Confucius prize include Vladimir Putin and Fidel Castro...

yeah, don't see how this award has anything to do with peace...
except to emulate Obama winning the Nobel Peace prize? *burn*

Its true.
It was something like... Saudi Arabia is on a committee that'll help choose experts for human rights related things, but i don't think they're leading anything.

Edit:

But the global fury is directed at the wrong target. Agnes Callamard, director of Columbia University’s Global Freedom of Expression and Information initiative (disclosure: I am part of its team of experts), told The Daily Beast: “What has happened is that Saudi Arabia is now a member of the advisory committee that produces recommendations to the president of the Human Rights Council who makes final decisions regarding the appointing of mandate holders. The composition of the advisory group is five representatives from all regions. It is a rotation within regions, so nobody appoints anybody. The real problem is that Saudi Arabia was appointed to the Human Rights Council and its being a member of the advisory committee is just a logical consequence. And the UN is not responsible for the appointment in any way.”

Setting the bar really high there. "Your nation isn't a wartorn hellhole on the verge of losing legitimacy. Congrats!"

That's like your teacher giving you a gold star for spelling your name right.
