Turkey blocks access to Wikipedia website: monitoring group

Turkish authorities on Saturday blocked access to online encyclopedia Wikipedia, an internet monitoring group said, the latest in what government critics say is a crackdown on free speech on the internet.

A block on all language editions of the Wikipedia website was detected at 8:00 a.m. (0500 GMT) on Saturday, monitoring group Turkey Blocks said on its website.

"The loss of availability is consistent with internet filters used to censor content in the country," it said.

Wow, crazy dictator goes straight for one of the best and most important websites out there. Can't have people looking up the defenition of a dictator online.

I mean I can't say I'm surprised but it's still sad regardless to have information cut off for one country.

All the news about Turkey makes me increasingly despise the EU politicians that still hold on to Turkey's EU membership negotiations.

Erdogan is talking about reinstating the death penalty. Turket is not gonna join the EU and talks are not stopped to keep erdogan happy by giving him money for keeping the refugees.

Negotiations won't continue. Especially considering Germanys general election is this year and the candidates will stay as far away as possible from the position that negotiations with Turkey should continue. It would be political suicide for whichever candidate proposes continuation.

Even if you support his politics, one man having too much power rarely ends up in anything good. You'd think people with any grasp on history would know this.

All I can say is, enjoy your shithole for letting this happen.

Looks like they're not denying the block, calling it "an administrative measure".

BBC News: "Turkish authorities block Wikipedia"
The Turkey Blocks group said the site was inaccessible from 08:00 (05:00 GMT) by order of the Turkish authorities.

People in the capital Istanbul were unable to access any Wikipedia pages without using a Virtual Private Network (VPN).

"After technical analysis and legal consideration based on the Law Nr. 5651, an administrative measure has been taken for this website," Turkey's Information and Communication Technologies Authority was quoted as saying.

No reason was given.

Turkey Blocks and Turkish media, including the Hurriyet Daily News, said the provisional order would need to be backed by a full court ruling in the next few days.

Baby Erdogan doesn't like the edits.

Frustrating to see a country abandoning its democratic heritage step by step :/ RIP Turkish democracy.

Germany is actually in favor of continuing the negotiations to still have an open channel to Turkey. Gabriel (Social Democrats) said that just a couple of days ago and Merkel (Conservatives) backed him.

Wait till Turkey blocks porn!

Will be ban Lord of the Rings?

Except in this case the general populace seems pretty happy with setting up a dictatorship.
The usual suspects (ignorant, short-sighted fools who just vote whenever some populist promises them unrealistic solutions for their problems) are always pretty fine and dandy with this shit until they start starving/dying. Then they will act like the victims despite having enabled the situation in the first place.

Considering they volume of german turks, it might be a good idea to go for the opposite.
It's not easy to ignore or offend this ethnicity if they hold more than 4 million votes, and promising EU membership is a surefire way to appease them.

Not at all. The half of the population that support Erdogan are mostly not aware about these things. They are simple minded folk that are manipulated by Erdogan's/AKP's play on their emotions and feelings. Shouty strongman saying stuff they like = they like him. They don't even know what dictator means. If they knew and were better informed they'd be angry with him. Yes there are a portion of die hard Erdoganists but most of his support are not fanatical, they just see him as doing a good job.

The other half of the population is the more educated, clued in, World conneted half.

Also there is controversy surrounding the vote as well. So saying the general populace is happy about Erdogan and this situation is wrong.

Anyway this is all relatively moot in this subject, as websites were blocked willy nilly in Turkey even before Erdogan. Youtube was blocked due to Kemamlists being butthurt about videos insulting Ataturk. This problem in Turkey isn't particular to Erdogan or Islamists, there are dumb fucks on the Secular side as well.

EU membership is not some belated throwaway gift you use to placate someone. You've previously claimed "there is little to stop Turkey from become a member of the EU" and had it completely picked apart.

Those reasons only covered the parts that were stated as regulation. Politically and ecomonically the EU will have a difficult time ahead if turkey will go to BRIC as trading partner instead.

Knowledge is the enemy of every dictator.
I wonder if that is true anymore. Regular people don't seem to want the truth anyways, they prefer weaponized nostalgia and confirmed biases.

Any dictatorship just needs to tell them what they want to hear, point them to a scapegoat (Jews, minorities, etc) and not bother with factual correctness. Some groups will show it is a lie, but they will be ignored.

Is this why why ~70% of belgians and 60% of the dutch turks voted for him?
There was an discussion on dutch TV between a pro-Erdogan Turk and a Turk against the referendum.

The pro-Erdogan Turk insisted that the Turkish government need to be changed and that giving the President more power was the right and only way to do so. When asked about how he'd like it if it happened in the Netherlands (where he lives) he refused to comment and constantly dodged the question.

I'm Turkish. Just learned of this (after taking the ACT in Bursa this morning). I'm feeling really fucking depressed and frustrated about it.

Education, murdered.
Free speech, murdered.
Democracy, murdered.
And now they are on their jihad against knowledge itself.

This country is damned.
