Unreal Engine 6 - Reveal Overview

Revealing this engine while the previous version is still in such a bad state in terms of performance its definitely a questionable decision
Yea but if we squint hard enough, cheer loudly and just hang on, Tim might be the next trillionaire before stuttering is fixed.

So everyone wins.

Right?

UE6 already? Seems like only yesterday that UE5 was struggling with stuttering, producing subpar lighting with Lumen, Nanite was barely implemented in games, and developers were struggling to optimize their games.
Oh wait that was yesterday.

no more blueprints is good... ai prompting code however can go very wrong and potentially have worse performance than blueprints ever had lol

Blueprints are being replaced by Scene Graphs which they haven't given any information on except that they use Verse underneath, so who knows if this really changes much. They still sound like a visual programming interface.

a Twitter post I've seen from a guy who's at the show said something along the lines of "bluprints will be deprecated, with no future plans for visual scripting support"

but maybe that was just bad communication on Epic's part

This statement is wrong. Scene Graph has nothing to do with scripting. It's a description of hierarchical elements in a level.

UE5.5/5.6/5.7 all provided substantial performance improvements and GoW E-Day is able to run at 60 FPS with hardware Lumen and MegaLights.

Modern audience developers are in shambles on social media over Blueprints going away. Now they'll either have to actually learn to code, or find a way to use AI without their social media friends finding out.

I'm pretty stunned by it. Finding out that some entire projects have shipped using only Blueprints.

Guys I'm starting to think simply by virtue of knowing how to install Windows, we can be considered game devs.

Expedition 33 was fully made with blueprints as well lol. probably explains why it was so bad on a technical level.

I really wonder if this will push indy and AA devs back to Unity or maybe even Godot. because without blueprints, all you got is a super heavy and complex engine

I fully expect them to use Claude and not tell anyone. Frankly I'd bet most already are.

I wonder if Epic is gonna look at rolling their own or trying some kind of special relationship with Anthropic.

Honestly if you can build a game with blueprints you know how to code.

Can't wait for an actual scripting language, blueprints are just way too messy and slow to build with.

Jesus Christ any time I see Sweeney talk he just creeps around like a nasty little rat. Disheveled hair. Small, uncertain voice and stutters. Closed/guarded body language with his hands close to his chest and shifting his weight back and forth constantly.

You are the founder and CEO of one of the biggest names in the industry. Where's the charisma? Stage presence? This guy just oozes "untrustworthy."

The very next presenter, Marcus, is completely different. Open body language. There are still plenty of "um, uh" but he sounds confident in what he's saying.
I like the guy, he speaks like a lion on twitter, and this is the first time i have seen him talking irl and I get what you're saying. He's like stuttering irl just like his engine.

He's that dodgy geek I had be keeping a side eye on irl. Always reminds me that such angry comments are often being made by people who have a hard time speaking irl.

Not to be an ass but isn't there a video like that with every other version of UE claiming it's a game changer?
Yeah, dude has the same clickbait title with every version. The videos are still useful to convey features as he shows some of them in action himself.

Sure it's fine to mess around with as a hobby, but I don't want to pay $70 for something someone stitched together with that. All the performance issues we've had this gen with UE5 make sense now. Use it to mock up a proof of concept sure, but then hire coders to come in and actually make a polished game out of it.

So I guess the main selling point of UE6 is going to be their new Verse language that is optimized for LLMs (and mostly aimed at replacing Blueprints, as far as that announcement blog post goes). I honestly don't know whether this is a good or bad idea.
