[Xbox] Next 100 Days: XBOX Reset

Please be joking.

How is exclusives going to save them with the current hardware prices?

Their analysts must've been aware how little impact their games had on the their own store, compared to how much they could make on Playstation and Switch. Did it not realize with their last couple of games? Halo is doing really well with pre-orders. And they really threw out the Gears port for this new strategy. Hope it paysoff now that they have the looming layoffs.

I do think Halo's performance outside of Xbox will be dictating a lot of what will happen going forward. And I'm guessing Phil was banking on their games doing well on Playstation. But I also have a hard time seeing Asha changing direction regardless of what the numbers are saying. I've almost never seen someone go back on their strategy when they've been so adamant about making changes. She'll either correct the ship or fill it with water before taking off.

what do you mean series s/x in 2027? she needs to produce Helix by then.
If they are sending out beta kits next year its unlikely they'll be able to launch in nov 2027.

Just reading her comments, absolute chaos, they don't know what they are delivering. "Just learning".....seems to be prepping userbase for eventually "Hey guys, memory is really expensive right now we are going to delay launch until market conditions improve...."

On the one hand you're not wrong, but if you're not selling games to this population then they might as well not exist.
Completely agree, I actually think Asha might as well come out and say "listen, community....If you really love a game I would say theres nothing better but to buy it and show your support but by all means, if you are not 100% sure on some games and want a great service, try gamepass."

Word it better perhaps, but I think being open and honest in that way could work. Then, individuals can support what they love day one and that might start invigorating sales. Thats how I treat the xbox platform and gamepass anyway.
Barely 30 million. But 35...LOL
30 million then, like it really matters, its still a shit load of sales and by far from the worst we have seen in the console space over the years.

wow so you're not even convinced they ship Nov 2027.

I just assumed the ship date is confirmed.

I am sure the date is written down. Bit what with the leadership changes and all the old plans being thrown out, i am not sure anything is set in stone. Hell it feels like the entire Xbox division could be shut down at any random Tuesday. The people who originally proposed the Helix no longer work there, as it were.

Barely outselling og xbox and perhaps half the sales of xbox one? Seems like biggest hardware sales failure since wii u?

Half the sales of Xbox one with a much cheaper SKU available since Day 1, so cut that number in half for a apple to apple comparision

Series S equivalent didn't exist in the previous generation

It's one of the worst failures ever

As I stated before Xbox biggest problem is hardware costs; oem is coming.
Xbox is in a position to obtain more acquisitions as if we didn't already know that is their plan. Layoffs are inevitable if your goal is a giant gaming software company that can feed off of pc/console/mobile and cloud.

Didn't realise the 2022 leak included sales mix of S vs X...Just crazy they thought a high end unit would succeed next gen.

#5: Our current platform infrastructure is not built for the battle ahead. Our systems are overly complex, spanning hundreds of dependencies, which hinders our ability to move fast. We've become too reliant on vendors to operate our systems and must become more self-reliant as an engineering culture to build for the future. We must increase the value we ship to players while decreasing the time it takes to do so. Going forward, we'll evolve and rebuild our stack and look at capabilities across all of XBOX and potential M&A to help us win in hardware, PC, mobile, and streaming.

Less humans, more AI?

All that Microsoft stack technical debt and outsourcing is finally showing up as real costs affecting operations and profitability. "Moving fast" is not going to help this, it will only destabilize further unless they are planning to completely blow up entire subdivisions.

I think we are confusing business models for it being canned. If they get OEMs to build on a reference model or find other means to subsidize the console, like gamepass, contracts etc. then it isn't really canned. It's just being sold differently to offset the upfront price.

They seem to want to go toward Google's model with Android. One vanilla "master" version and OEM flavors to compete in the different market segments, because it's too large a task to handle alone by the core business. This also allows them to pass the burden of cost of NAND to be other's problem as prices remain high and rise further.

I've seen emails like this at companies I've worked for and…things got bleak pretty quickly.

When a CEO says something like "the next 60, 90, 100 days, etc.", hold onto your butts.

And she's really running Phil Spencer through the mud with her first 100 days. He made a ton of mistakes, but look toward the future please.

The words she is using are precise for a reason. There are going to be layoffs, team restructures, and major shortcuts that are not going to go over well for the employees (and probably their vendors/consultants too). It also means everything major is decided and they are enacting it. You don't "figure things out", this was already discussed before she took this job.

I will be 100% honest I have zero clue about the whole radical new business model but have a feeling it revolves around the cloud

Renewed interest in xCloud streaming or another Game Pass push? Perhaps. Microsoft is sucking up as much hardware as they can and need plans to utilize those data centers once people realize the true cost of AI API usage. Whatever they decide, the point is they can't compete without a competitive console, they can't sell a capable console at a competitive price without volume, and they can't even achieve volume of production under the current NAND cost constraints.

That means success is not measured by Xbox hardware sales, despite this new "exclusivity" push. I suspect part of this new business model means Game Pass or xCloud exclusives, while maintaining hardware independence. AKA "multiplatform" releases you can only play the way Microsoft chooses. They will try it, at least.

imagine having "over 1 billion players that choose to play XBOX and our games each year" and not knowing how to make money from them, .... Buying up half the industry only to put out employees out of misery and jobs while writing a mail stating you are REVIVING xbox, by taking gears of war as an exclusive to see how it will sell to your billion of players (its gonna flop so hard) Who in his right mind will still invest in this brand? I predict gamepass will be killed, many people loose their job and they go full 3th party. Everything reads as an excuse. not a single hair on my body trusts them.
