Is there a way we can remove Kansas, put it ontop of Texas, then push every state from there and east out towards a mega volcano in the middle of the ocean?
Just as a hypothetical.

COuld just dump them in the Yellowstone supervolcano...less work to push them ;)

Yes and this will pass because its Kansas, and immediately every gay and lesbian person in Kansas will become a persecuted people by the government. They say people have "the right" to use religious freedom to deny service, so what's to stop dozens of businesses putting up signs saying "No gays allowed due to religious reasons?"

Well, nothing. And nothing will stop what will happen to the poor idiots who decide to publicly announce to the internet that gays aren't allowed at their businesses. Much like the cake idiots, they just don't get how isolated this stance is. And how thorough a lot of people can be.

Sexuality isn't a protected class in most states. In most states you can already do that.

So what happens if you need to hand in some government documents and every clerk is a homophobic bastard that day?

So they're saying the real victims are those who have to serve homosexuals? Not gay people themselves, who are the ones actually facing discrimination here?

Yeah, you can fuck right off, Kansas legislature.

a lot of my threads involve me fucking up somehow. Perhaps I'm a moron?
Oooh man. Would the rest of America actually care if these states seceded?
It's really unfair to the rest of you that your backwards parts get away with shit like this.

Wasn't Dorothy all about rainbows? What the hell Kansas!

You know . . . this is largely a sad and pointless law.

If some establishment doesn't want to serve gay people then why do you want to support them anyway? As long as the number of establishments that are bigots is small, this kind of issue can be dealt with using social pressures. But at the time of the civil rights act, there were so many public accommodations establishments that would refuse service to black people that they couldn't even take a car trip without sleeping in their cars and not being able to eat at roadside diners.

This legislation is simply confusing. Everyone involved in passing this knows it'll get immediately shot down in any higher court. Why would they even begin to put in the ridiculous amount of effort undoubtedly required to pass it in the first place?

You ask this on a message board, which is a prime example of people investing ridiculous amounts of effort arguing that amounts to nothing?

The way things are heading I honestly see a ballkanization of the US, the entire country is so split politically, culturally and economically now, very hard to see the "United" in the USA. Secession movements, tea party, these things will only increase.

People have said this every ten years for the last 200 about the US. We'll be fine.

It's being pushed by a party that's usually pretty concerned with "wasteful government spending" too.

What's more wasteful than blowing tons of money holding sessions and votes for laws that you know will be struck down?

my posts in sonic and fedora threads are pretty oppressive. But they are free to the taxpayers.

Fortunately, changing demographics are helping us make sure that won't happen and they are on the non-hateful side.

I wonder if these people realize that the pilgrims fled not only from BEING persecuted, but also they fled so they COULD persecute.

If the liberal-majority California couldn't pass an anti-gay Proposition what in the hell makes Kansas think it can pull it off? The idiocy is amazing.

Dear Kansas,

You know that shit they're doing in Uganda and Russia? Those are not examples to follow. The rest of the civilized world laughs at them for their backwards beliefs, and we'll have to start doing the same to you if you continue to insist on living in the 19th century.

Funny you should mention Uganda! My aunt and uncle have lived in Eastern Kansas for decades. They were Sunday Protestants, and liked their local megachurch. But as time went on it became more and more reactionary, and the preacher began to say blatantly homophobic shit in the sermons. Eventually it was kicked out of the local Protestant parish for its extremism and ended up affiliating itself with the Church of Uganda. Needless to say, my aunt and uncle don't go to church anymore.

At least we're not actively pushing an agenda of oppression toward a discriminated minority.

Honestly, this is pretty bad as far as internet-forum-false-equivalencies go.

Kansas swinging for the fences, trying desperately to stop progress on equal rights for LGBT people. They will eventually be brought into the 21st century kicking and screaming just like Utah and Oklahoma and Nevada, etc.

You missed the point, which was just to say that people are willing to invest huge amounts of time and energy and passion into things that objectively won't achieve anything. People just can't help themselves in raging about things they hate.

It's not a comparison about the specific goals, it's a commentary about how people regard their beliefs and how much impact they have.

I love when people act like the Free Exercise clause is grounds to allow discrimination against a hated group, even though that's never been how its read.

There are, in fact, plenty of religions that would love to have free reign do all sorts of things that are illegal, e.g. polygamy, ritual sacrifice, etc.

The ironic part is that you don't even have to make up another religion to show how stupid this is. Just use teachings from the bible to refuse service to other Christians with sins such as wearing mixed fabrics or working on the Sabbath ("Nope, I can't serve NFL players"). You can even get personal by always asking about whether they have ever been in a divorce.
