More information about the 16 invited participants in the tournament, the identity of the announcers, and how fans of the franchise can view the tournament in person and via webcast, will be communicated shortly.

"Here is the game. You can play and try it now and then put on a good show tomorrow".

It's probably gonna be garbage, the game and the tournament. They should really play Melee instead.

I'm assuming this means we'll have all characters announced by then?

I guess it doesn't necessarily mean that, they could keep some characters hidden and restrict the tournament to only the ones they've shown off at that point.

I doubt it. They don't have to unlock all of the characters to have a tournament for the game. We already know 29. I am sure one is going to get revealed in May. I am sure E3 will reveal at least 3 or more as well. 30 something characters to choose from is enough for a tournament...I just hope some of the competitors choose some of the new characters so we can start to see their stuff rather than just stick with veterans they might main from past titles.

Nintendo is inviting 16 highly skilled Super Smash Bros. players to the NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles to compete in a Super Smash Bros. for Wii U tournament.

WOAH!

I wonder what changed Sakurai's stance on competitive fighters to not only include a competitive mode in the new Smash, but also have a tournament for the biggest presentation at E3 to be composed of 16 'highly skilled' players.

This is going to be amazing.

I'm lining up several hours earlier so I can actually play promptly.
I really hope they release a GCN like controller for Wii U.

Get the fuck out of here.

While I dont think the game will be bad, the tournament might be bad if the players dont have enough time to learn the new mechanics. Can you imagine melee players going for edgeguards in this new eviroment? The trump mechanic will throw them off really bad.

If the Wii U was somewhat successful, I could see them doing it, but with its dismal sales it's more likely they'll just fall back on the CPP than invest in another specialized controller.

Didn't Triforce hint at something like this a few weeks ago?

Stop. Just fucking stop right here.

That fucking con artist has nothing to do with these announcements. He's been saying the same fucking thing for three years now and just because Nintendo decides to actually do something this year doesn't mean he knew anything about it.

The less people think he's relevant the sooner he disappears and stops screwing over more young players.

I think the Melee hype from EVO last year got to him.

And I wouldn't be surprised if the Top 16 from said tournament are the ones who are invited to compete.

Don't botch this Nintendo. Get M2K, Mango, Hungrybox, PP, Armada, and Leffen there and get the top talent from Cali and EC on it (such as people like SFAT, PewPewU, The Moon, DJ Nintendo, etc. etc.)

And the announcers better be prog and D1. On a side note: I truly wonder if this was the thing D1 was... working behind the scenes to show Nintendo the good sides of the community... he polled the community for good articles about the scene and other stuff to send to someone at Nintendo.

And you know what's amazing? Nintendo adopted one of the lingos/terms the scene uses for get togethers to play Smash for hours: Smashfest. That's just awesome.

LOL I wonder how many people in this thread bothered to watch the youtube vid. There was hints at more than Smash in there. For example if you can't get to E3 you can play Smash and who knows what else at Best Beuy during E3 week nationwide.

This was a shrude announcement by Nintendo. Hilarious to collaborate with Mega64 after VGX.

I've never seen it spelled like that lol.
I like it.

Pretty sure this is a smash4 tournament, not a melee tournament. So they need n64 and brawl players too.

Edit: Oh and iirc prog teased an announcement for the end of the month, and I'm pretty sure it wasnt about Shroomed sponsorship

Assuming you mean the Classic Controller Pro, you do realize that the Pro Controller exists. They could easily just make a wired USB variant of that.

They should have a Road to E3 video series.

With a focus on all the tourney players.

And dress it up like the Wizard... and make it into a doc!

But those are the most known top players of any Smash game. Melee also has been on the rise, I can't imagine Nintendo wouldn't capitalize on that and focus purely on the players from Melee to play Smash 4.

We'll see though. It would be cool to have Zer0, Ally, Tyrant, or Nairo in it.

Not sure why this thread hasn't devolved into guesses/lists yet.

M2K
Dr PP
Mango
Hungrybox
Hax
Fiction
Isai
Ken
Korean DJ
Chillindude
Zero
Nairo
ADHD
Ally
Tyrant
ESAM

Left out Armada/Leffen/Amsa just since they aren't already in the US. I could just as well see Nintendo shying away from Melee players, or picking an upcoming Melee/Brawl tournament as a qualifier, instead of handpicking.

I was thinking about getting Isai and 1 more from 64, 4 or 5 from Brawl and the rest from Melee. The biggest scene is melee, so it makes sense to get more players from that, but it doenst make sense to not get any player from other games.

I don't get it: the tournament at E3 will be just for those 16 pro-players? and other people will be watching it live in the Nokia theatre?

Hopefully the new Smash Brothers ends up being embraced by fans so that the most popular Smash games on the tournament scene aren't a Gamecube title and hacked Wii game.

That's typically how an invitational event works. You have a few invited participants, and allow people to watch them play.

Is there a snowball chance in hell they will be releasing Gamecube-like contollers for WiiU? cant imagine doing smash bros without that controller

Well, how do you feel if they decided to go with Video Game Journalism' highly skilled players?

I hope that they would ask good miss of 64, Melee and Brawl players, so we can see their opinions. Variable players meant different opinions.

Cross-posting from the Smash mega thread:

...so what are the chances 2 of the invitees decide to skip fighting for most of the match, and instead test out mechanics?

Will this be their first time playing the game, a la the Wizard?

Will they be randomly assigned characters, or will they all get to choose Little Mac?

So many questions!

I think people will be disappointed if they're expecting a Melee. It won't be competitive like that.

Interesting. So no traditional conference but they are still at the nokia theatre for a live event.

really curious if this game had any playtesting from competitive folks. Don't many fighters do that these days?
I'd like to know too as I thought in the past this was tried with some games but all that happened is the competitive players kept knowledge of the exploits they found to themselves to use in tournaments rather than disclose this to the developers.

That's up to Sakurai. If a 10 year old game or a hack of game keep stealing the spotlight, than it's up to the dev to show "Why you should be playing this new game." If he answers with no real reason, this is going to keep happening.

.

Players should just play what they want to play, and "cuz it's new" isn't reason enough.

It hasn't. No competitive players have been asked to playtest the game or help give any feedback at all.

I really hope the rules are based on what the competitive community uses. It would be hard to get them to come out if all items and all stages are on (see: EVO 2008). You might get some that are desperate enough to play Smash 4 but if it's a tournament ran with items on I don't know how seriously people like Mango or Dr. PP would take it -- M2K probably would go regardless to get data on the game period but people like Mango and PP? I don't know.

Really hope they've done their research and understand what this invitational needs in order to be a success.

A genuinely funny video? A fantastic e3 wiiu smash tourney? OK, what have they done with the real marketing dept at Nintendo?

Reggie Fils-a-mech, hehehe.
