A genuinely funny video? A fantastic e3 wiiu smash tourney? OK, what have they done with the real marketing dept at Nintendo?
Reggie Fils-a-mech, hehehe.
I know right

honest question: how do you know? Maybe that work is being done in Japan.
Well, how do you feel if they decided to go with Video Game Journalism' highly skilled players?
I hope that they would ask good miss of 64, Melee and Brawl players, so we can see their opinions. Variable players meant different opinions.
Cross-posting from the Smash mega thread:
...so what are the chances 2 of the invitees decide to skip fighting for most of the match, and instead test out mechanics?
Will this be their first time playing the game, a la the Wizard?
Will they be randomly assigned characters, or will they all get to choose Little Mac?
It hasn't. No competitive players have been asked to playtest the game or help give any feedback at all.
I really hope the rules are based on what the competitive community uses. It would be hard to get them to come out if all items and all stages are on (see: EVO 2008). You might get some that are desperate enough to play Smash 4 but if it's a tournament ran with items on I don't know how seriously people like Mango or Dr. PP would take it -- M2K probably would go regardless to get data on the game period but people like Mango and PP? I don't know.
Really hope they've done their research and understand what this invitational needs in order to be a success.

True, but that was a demo, not a tournament.
guaranteed it'll be 2 minute timed matches with items on, random stages lol
at most, for glory rules.
Honestly this completely blows my mind when I think harder about what exactly is going on here.
A Smash Bros. tourney, hosted by Nintendo, being held in the fucking Nokia Theater, a 7100 seat auditorium.
That is legitimately "holy shit" worthy.

wiimote nunchuk only
Man.....wow...Yeah, hard to wrap my brain around the fact that this is actually happening. Even if it's lame rules with players who have never been able to touch the game before, it will be both (A) a huuuge info dump and (B) NINTENDO HOSTING A COMPETITIVE SMASH TOURNAMENT. Never thought this day would come, despite how much sense it makes. I soooo hope they get it right. Though you'd have to be insane not to have massive doubts.
I imagine they'd have to use the "For Glory" ruleset, right? Isn't this the kind of thing they made those rules for?
sideways wiimote only, no unlockable characters, free for all, 2 min time matches
that was the actual ruleset for the official gamestop brawl tournament
Would be much more interesting if it used items.

To you. Not to the people playing, though, which is far more important.
You would need way more matches and time to get a fair result. Kind of when you play Mario Kart with a group of friends, and there is this guy who gets 1st many more times than the rest in the long run, he clearly is the better player but you need much more time to determine that.
Or they could run it for exactly the same amount of time with the goal of entertaining the audience instead of determining who's definitively the best at a game they've all barely played before.

While I dont agree with the "items would be more interesting" one should always think about the audience, they are far more important than the players, they are the target of the sponsors after all. They need to be interested to pick up the game and play too or your scene wont grow (not talking about smash, but in general)

In that case you dont even need the pro players, just have the developers play or something. Or maybe even some game journalist, their skill level is much closer to the average after all, so matches wont look flashier than they really are.
Yeah thats what I mean. I can see how things would be fair with no items, but to the general audience watching (Nintendo fans will jump in regardless, I imagine this is also a PR thing to grab newcomers as well) items and just "things happening" in general would be much more interesting. Especially when its supposed to be a "celebration of all things Smash Bros".
But on that note i'm also kinda biased in that I like Mario Kart and Smash with all items intact at all times.
You think I don't know that? Lol.
Nintendo loses a lot more than they gain by having items on. This is their chance to show the competitive community they're serious and a gesture of showing they understand the scene would be to have items off. It would look bad on them to have them on and the scene most certainly would be hugely disappointed if not probably peeved by it. You don't want to step on the toes of the people you're trying to court.
Having items on would also distract from being able to see the game in its purest form and understand what is actually different about it compared to the previous games.

It's funny, because I was just re-reading the announcement, and wondering if the 16 skilled players might mean "Developer play testers." That would allow Nintendo more control, and they would be highly skilled people. No one bitching afterward about playing in a 2 minute items on match or stage hazards, and you can make sure that a wide variety of characters are shown off. Still, probably not what people are expecting, so not good to set up that type of disappointment.
Quick edit: Also, I don't think this tournament is designed to appeal to the fgc - I think it's designed to build hype for the release of an upcoming game. So I expect them to want to show off the pokeballs, items, and AT's - the things that help differentiate Smash.
Why do people still get online multiplayer mixed up with local? For Fun and For Glory were announced in the Online Multiplayer Section since it involves leaderboards. Local multiplayer doesn't as far as we know. Not that we know what stages will be selectable.

I do agree on all your points, is just that your last post made me remember all this brawl thing they are trying with the 1 stock best of 5:
-"we need to try new things for brawl"
-"the pros might not like them"
-"but the audience seems interested"
-"who cares about the audience"
Hey, one MLG qualifier is running 1 stock Bo5 for Brawl!
sideways wiimote only, no unlockable characters, free for all, 2 min time matches

Revven, would the ruleset even matter if the game was still far from melee!? People here are talking about the ruleset being really important for the competitive comunity to care... what about the gameplay??
Sakurai will play doubles and beat them all.
That would be OK with me if they did that. I'm sure people like Mango and PP would be down with that rule set, at least (especially because we don't know anything about how any of the more quirky stages will play out in a competitive setting).
Anyway, predictions for which ones they're gonna pick? Mine:
Top 16 will be if they're pooling from multiple Smash games:
M2K
Mango
Dr. PP
Hungrybox
Isai
Superboomfan
Nairo
Ally
ADHD
ESAM
Ken
KoreanDJ
ChuDat
HugS
SFAT
Fiction or DEHF or aMSa/Armada (if they're willing to fly out people from outside the US)
If they're pooling just from Melee:
M2K
Mango
Dr. PP
Hungrybox
Armada (if they're willing to fly out someone)
aMSa (if they're willing to fly out someone)
SFAT
PewPewU
Fiction
DJ Nintendo
KirbyKaze
DEHF
Westballz
S0ft
Leffen (if they're willing to fly out someone)
Ken or KoreanDJ
The second list is trying to be as diverse as possible in terms of representing regions. I'm aware there's a lot of Cali rep but... it would be really easy to get a lot of Cali players to this vs getting people from Midwest or Southwest or even EC (which is why there's only really one rep from any of those regions). And of course, we have no idea if Nintendo is going to be flying these players out to the event (if they accept the invite) or if the players have to pay for their own travel expenses. Invitational sort of implies that but it's Nintendo and this event doesn't sound like they're going to be competing for any cash prize currently. And it's especially sketchy for them to fly out people like Leffen, Armada, or aMSa. Though I would love to see it happen.
