yeah thats another good tip, i used to do it anyway before posting, but now its become neccessary.

Since gaf got a redesign the preview function isnt always 100% - using slices in photoshop leaves an ugly space wasting gap between each image in preview, but as soon as you post it everything lines up correctly.

I usually just use an old-ass post to edit what it looks like in post-form instead of using Preview Post so I can get the right dimensions for everything.

I noticed that Preview Post, etc doesn't usually have the right dimensions if I wanted to indent something or see how something looked like if I didn't indent/center it, so I ended up editing an old post for it

ah, so smart. i'll do that too.

Uh guys, you might want to edit all of that out. What you're giving tips for is technically ILLEGAL, as you're downloading the font file without paying the proper licensing fee to its respective type foundry. In most cases, the font files are licensed for specific contexts, so not even the companies using them for their websites are free to do with them as they wish. I'm sure none of you knew, but this is not the sort of thing that should be posted here.

If you really feel that you need a certain typeface to spruce up your design, you can try places like DaFont or Font Squirrel. Smashing Magazine also occasionally publishes really nice posts on its website featuring tons of quality typefaces, as well. CoDrops, too, but it's more focused around web design instead of graphic design in general.

As far as I know, the images are free to use, though.

Also, unless I missed something since it was officially announced, no one's claimed the Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate OT. Hopefully I'm not stepping on any toes, but if not, I'd like to take it.

As long as they're not used commercially elsewhere I think it's fair to say "X" font has been licensed for promotion of game "Y", and gaf ot's are promoting the game in a way.

It's not airtight, but I can live with that

The font I'm using in my upcoming OT is the same one for the game's actual logo and it's free to use so I'm safe.

That's the thing, though; depending on how the license is written, you potentially can't even use them for personal use. It's totally a case-by-case thing, though, but it's definitely something to be mindful of.

The vast majority of typefaces used will likely be serifs and sans-serifs. So, though not quite exact, there a lot out there that can approximate the general form without needing to worry about anything.

For example, I don't know what specific typeface Persona 4 Arena and presumably Ultimax will use, but Open Sans by Google comes pretty close while having a lot of flexible font weights.

I had no idea about the breaks being different in preview.

Normally I just get everything set up in preview. Since I don't slice images I don't need to worry about spacing issues. I started my OT career with a 1280 wide base and have been rolling with that.

My first OT was the Xbox One launch thread and it was very stressful. Not only was it my first OT, but it was a console launch. While I'm proud of it, there were a lot of mistakes made. I wouldn't rely as heavily upon image being the base of the design. It made it a chore to edit. Images can frame good content and provide structure, but the base of the OT should be text. It looks a bit silly to me now.

Most fun I ever had on an OT was the Deadpool OT.

It's not very long, but I enjoyed adding some Deadpool humor.

I'm not sure yet what style I'll use for Watch Dogs though, I'd like to try the 1000px thingy tbh.

Oh wow, I didn't know that. Thanks for the heads up, Heaven Smiley.

Yeah, I was sure quite a few people didn't know that, which is why I felt a little concerned. It's easy to forget this, since you have so many of the things at your fingertips, but every font file is hand-made, whether it's hand-drawn or made on a computer. That means that a person had to sweat over making each one - coming up with the general design, making sure everything is well-proportioned, and that it all just looks uniform. From an outsider's view, they're just letters, but quite a bit of time and effort goes into typefaces to ensure that they don't just look like chicken scratch and that they are visually appealing.

Every time you download a font file from a legit distributer, you're typically given a text file outlining what you can do with it, even if you go to one of the bigger sites that is more strict about things but is generally more in-your-face about your rights. When you download it through a second-hand source, of course, you get none of that, leaving you in the dark as to whether or not you just pirated something.

Oh, and I can't believe I forgot to mention this, but the Lost Type Co-Op is one of my favorite resources, period. It's a site put together to give you a really nice curated list of typefaces, all free for personal use. It was actually made to help design students still in school put together higher-quality designs without needing to strain the wallet, when money might not come so easily. The League of Movable Type does something similar, but it hasn't been updated in a while. Still has some really nice typefaces you can download for free, though.

I tested out the 1000px width on mobile. Looks fine. Just don't center the images or anything or it'll be auto-shrunken down and will look awful.

I'd usually tend to err on the side of doing the most legal thing, but honestly when it's being used for a static image on a user forum site to promote a game I don't expect it would raise any concerns tbh. Normally though if I needed a font for a quick title I'd just copy the preview, and mask it if necessary.

I think we should consider ending the practice of using images with baked in text for OTs.

It may look great on a big monitor, but we're well into the age of mobile devices, and big baked in images don't work well at all for those platforms. The large image download size is one issue, but more importantly is that it breaks the ability for mobile web browsers to fashion responsive web sites that fit with mobile resolutions.

100% this. Absolutely ridiculous practice in 2014. The vast majority of my GAF browsing is on mobile. These stupidly huge embedded images render many OT's completely unreadable. You're not being artistic or clever — you're just showing how out of touch you are with the modern web. Please cut that shit out.

I got a kick out of writing the ME3 OT. "There's still plenty of alien species for Shepard to kill have sex with."

I'm making an Outlast Photo OT similar to the one for Infamous Second Son. I assume that would be ok?

Edit: I'm gonna go ahead and post it. I guess it will just get locked if I'm breaking any rules with it, and I can change anything if need be.

Hey, Nemesis_

With respect to this:
The RetroN 5 gaming system seems to be finally releasing next month. Pretty excited to make my first OT :)

RetroN 5 by qq more (September 12 2013)

Release date is Dec 10th 2013
I talked to qq more tonight, as he has stopped posting on GAF, and he said isn't going to do this thread, especially since it had gotten a price hike. I'm posting this in his stead since he's retired from GAF for the time being.

Anyone else is free to do the RetroN 5 OT at this point.

From what we've gathered, Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga is likely to be released on the PlayStation Network soon. I would like to volunteer my time into making the OT for Digital Devil Saga! :) (It seems as though it is a "when", not "if" situation.)

Quick photoshop question:

What's the easiest way to resize a canvas? Let's say I cut the lower part of an image and copy it to a different photoshop tab. I then have to resize my canvas because there's an empty spot. I have to resize it so that the upper picture fills the entire canvas.
