Watch_Dogs original graphical effects (E3 2012/13) found in game files [PC]

A. There are rumours, about a 5GB patch comming, but we don't know, what it will include. Also, they would look even more ridiculous, if they ban people using those files, that are included in the game. Remember, it's not a mod. We are simply enabling, their settings.

B. Only a dumb PR statement, that the game wasn't downgraded. Still waiting for an other statement.

How is it not a mod? I don't think there's anything wrong with this, believe me, but I'm curious why you don't think its a mod.

I think people feel it is not a mod because there are no new assets or code written other then enabling options already in the game. While I do agree it is a mod at its core since there are modified config files, its more like running the game at Ultra+ or "previewing" the upcoming Nvidia feature patch.

Really? May I ask where did you see about these rumours? Thank you.

I saw somebody posting that a few pages ago:

some dude at guru3d is saying that UBI is rolling out a 5GB patch for the game

A mod is mostly user created and adds things to the game, if I'm not mistaken. These files however, are already included in the game and simply being enabled. I don't see it as a mod, but if I'm wrong, I'm wrong. :p

Played the hacked version for about an hour last night. Speed was great (as good as the non-hacked version) and it looked incredible. Truth be told, I thought Watch Dogs looked fine before (maybe I have low standards) but with this hack, taking a boat down the river in a rain storm and then making my way into the city as the sun came out was an amazing experience graphically which lead to an experience emotionally. Outside of any gameplay, the graphics gave me an emotional experience.

We still love you, CliffyB.

So anyways I saw this (mod) running on a buddy's nice PC last night and while the resolution was better than the PS4 one I've been playing, and the rain looks a bit better, but honestly it was very very close for me. I'm not a huge graphics snob but I do have a healthy appreciation (I lean more rez than framerate but w/e) and it's not dramatic. If they added the improved rain to PS4, and bumped it up to 1080p somehow I'd squeal like a little girl, but I'm not really that bothered by the differences I've seen.

I believe that has to do with the *other* controversy. Also most of the interest around this came from Reddit who were linked here, on GAF it wasn't THAT large of an issue.

Yes I noticed. I edited my post, so my apologies for not reading properly before posting.

Still, I think it's a good example of how some developers regard the gaming community when such a community doesn't blindly accept and believe everything that is thrown their way through PR firms or dev tweets...

It got buried in the thread, but Bish has already said he's going to start "modding" people's posting priviledges if they keep up the semantics on whether it's a mod or not... just be wary.

As for CliffyB, this is less "What I heard from lots of developers" and more "This is what I think, and to justify it I'll say many nameless people agree with me." Also love the fact that you'd use a word that most people put on par with the N word to describe "Gaf" as if "gaf" were a single person.

Something interesting I noticed. All the light bulbs in the E3 reveal were individually modelled, whereas the released version replaces it with a texture.

Seems like I missed that post. Thanks for the heads up.

Sorry, Bish, I didn't mean, to riot against you.

After trying Maldo's test patch, I don't want to play the game normally anymore lol. It's still really stuttery by comparison.

I'm currently downloading his mod to test. How does the overall game look, I see talk about texture aliasing?

Using a 780 6GB ACX and I still get stuttering when driving fast and small hitching when moving from area to area using Ultra textures.

Keep in mind it's supposed to look horrendous with the texture aliasing. Hopefully Maldo can upload a fixed version soon. :p

Visuals aside the performance does seem better, I noticed it used all 3gb of available vram at any resolution, looks promising.

You won't want to play through the game like this, it looks very aliased, but it definitely reduced judder for me.

Woops, missed that. My bad.

So wait this can actually IMPROVE the games performance?? I havn't bought it yet because I'm reading that it's a crap port.

Opinions are ranging from it improves to performance to it doesn't improve performance

One person says he thought it improved performance but it didn't. Another person said they went from 60 to 45 fps, and most people not noticing a change at all.

In my opinion the game is pretty well coded only problem is it stutters on a 3GB 780 if you do ultra texutres and anything above 0xaa

This seems to me as if they kept them off to ensure parity between the console and PC verisons, for some unknown reason...and then there were probably plans to patch in the later effects as a "PC High Performance Patch", thus making people shut up about it.

Not every tweet is a part of a corporate conspiracy against GAF.

I never meant to imply that it was.

TTOOLL simply asked if there was any response yet from Ubisoft and as far as I know this has been the only one so far.

And I think that
Opinions are my own not those of my employer
relates to stuff unrelated to Ubisoft. She is the "PR & Events Manager" of Ubisoft Benelux after all and has also made previous statements about the PC version not being downgraded.

edit: Double Post. Something is up, pages are loading insanely slow and I've gotten multiple "This post is a duplicate of one you posted in the last 5 minutes" messages.

I wonder if it is possible to enable real-time reflections. Or is that something that isn't typically possible to enable/disable through a simple configuration file?

I very much doubt it. Watch Dogs' engine uses deferred rendering, Which typically has issues with transparency/reflections/alpha. It would require a huge amount of effort and resource time to switch all cubemap reflections into screen space ones.

In fact I can't think of any game of recent memory that applies real time reflections to every potential reflective surface. It's definitely not a small fix, even though it's perceived to be. Old engines using forward rendering could do this stuff easily, but most developers starting switching to deferred or a hybrid variant of deferred because it allows for vast amounts of dynamic lights/shadows and very scalable.

TheWorse's thread on Guru3D has completely gone to shit. Constant harassment from people saying he stole the damn mod.

I wish he could sign up here... that forum has 0 moderation it seems.

Embarrassing.

She doesn't work for any of the ubi studios that actually had a role in development of this game, nor is she probably even aware of this recent implementation of visual enhancements found in the code. She is PR and likely using response as damage control from previous ridiculous WD related fiascos in the media.

Its not just her though, this really is the company's stance on the issue.

this is a quote from the creative director.

There's no scale down in quality, especially the next-gen versions, It's pretty much the opposite. What we showed at E3 2012 in a lot of respects was less good. I think it's in the details. So no, there's no scale down.

Looks like you've found the problem. The stuttering's practically gone, even with shadows and reflections on Ultra. I have a 2GB 670.

This works? Can I use this in combo with TheWorse mod? And I can play Ultra textures with my 2GB GTX770? And there is no stuttering? Are you for real?

Tried out 0.7 with the installer .exe last night. Didn't eliminate the stuttering (still too much of it to play on Ultra textures... but damnit... it looks so nice :[), but reduced it to almost unnoticeable on High textures except for the kind of scenarios where it was the worst before. It does look quite attractive. I honestly like the DoF in motion more than I was expecting. It could stand to be toned down a tiny bit more for my tastes, but it certainly didn't negatively impact gameplay. It wasn't the source of failure in any hacking attempts or anything like that (which is still a complete blast by the way- people need to realize that even if a target is aware of your intrusion there are still options to pull off the hack). The Bloom, while a nice effect, is just overdone- almost hilariously. Remember, the game momentarily blows out the colors, lighting, bloom, and DoF, every time you pull out your profiler- with the enhanced bloom this can go past 11... to like 17. Try getting on a train, looking up at the flurorescent lights overheard, and pulling out your phone... my RETINAS!

All in all I really like the way it looks and plays with the mod, and while I would certainly love to play on Ultra textures without stuttering, I'm excited to see where it goes.

Again: comparison time!

the e3 version:

vs.

the mod 0.7b version:

This time in the same Aspect Ratio ;)
But still - e3v looks fantastic

Well that's a more relevant quote to highlight then. I just don't see the point on shitting on a random person from PR which this thread has done a fair amount of. If Jonathan Morin himself responded directly to this recent news I'd understand the reaction completely, but he hasn't & probably won't.

The reason Aiden looks taller in the E3 video is because there are certain outfits in the game that kinda fatten him up. Makes him look shorter and stockier. And that's what's going on in the bottom. I personally only like the default outfit out of the ones I've tried so far.

But yeah... I don't think we'll reach the quality in the top.

The released game has some lights next to the road that are not present in the E3 version. Probably not the only reason it looks brighter, but definitely "a" reason.

So best case for Ubisoft, they're way beyond cheap because they failed spend the handful of cash it would have cost to roll out a bunch of graphical options/fixes that a couple of enthusiasts with no access to the game's source code or anything, just configuration options they left in the game, were able to produce.

Worst case, they purposely excluded graphics for god knows what reason.

So are you cheap assholes or evil assholes Ubisoft?

I'm sorry if this has been asked already but the thread is very big: If I turn off the DOF does that mean the mod stops working and resets all the settings? Thanks

^ you can turn off DOF but only after launching WD and loading in (not at main menu I think). Need to do it each time. Set the xml to read-only.

Okay, that took ages to process!

Night time and DOF driving, plus walking around with rain:

be sure to set it to 1080/1440p
