I know, those aren't 16 bit...
but to me, they are the most iconic city scapes I could think of

I don't know why I love this stuff so much...
16-bit cities are cold and uninviting... but still, I want to go there.

I absolutely adore the aesthetics.
Also thanks for linking this page.
It's wonderful

While not on the same level as the incredibly evocative images posted so far, I've always had a soft spot for cityscapes in racing games of this era:

Chase HQ, Aytron Senna's GP and Lotus Turbo Challenge.

It's kind of small but I've always dug Casino Night's glitzy city backdrop.

Actually while i'm on the series, Stardust Speedway has a similar sort of background, well except a lot messier looking.

I always wished I could go and explore the Casino Night's backdrop as a kid.

I was listening to this while looking through this tumblr. mmm.

ha this next level shit

I liked the futuristic city in Turtles in Time.

This was always a big favorite of mine as a kid, especially with the music that plays. The arcade version was cool, cuz you had that kind of fish-eyes/warped perspective when you get the breaks in the highway, it made it look like you were really above the city instead of in front of. Made it seem less static.

I watched a bit of Dirty Pair last night and there is definitely something to be said of the kinda cool looming 80s-90s Japanese cartoon megalopolis visual style. Same thing can be said of the colorful but run-down American urban wasteland look of the 70s-80s. Also: pixel art.

I blame the Matrix and the "Apple" aesthetic for how shitty cities look now. It's all either grungy brownish green tinted garbage or some high contrast mostly white nightmare. Barfaroonie.

TC, where have you been my whole life? This is why I love the GAF. I'm also a big fan of 2D cityscapes. For years I've wanted someone to create a massive, sprawling, 16-bit dystopian city in which I could explore and beat up baddies (preferably Neo Tokyo. Basically just make me Akira the game). I've always envisioned some sort of side-scroller, but with a myriad of gameplay mechanics to give it a more modern feeling. Man, 2D art just packs so much soul, detail and character, it's hard not to love.

Not a game per say, but I always think of Danger's teaser video for his track 4h30. Such a badass vibe.

We need more cyberpunk-y modern games that are set in urban, sexy environments like this. God damn.

That being said, I can't wait for Cyberpunk 2077.

Just wanted to chime in and let ya'll know that this is my favorite all-time thread.
There, I said it.

Edit: It also introduced me to Cyber City OEDO 808 - so many husbandos - you'd think it was NeoToukiden!

8 years old, seeing the vibrant cityscape, listening to the amazing music, fueling all the hopes and dreams of the life that was to come...

Then the *real* adulthood happened, and has been immensely shit by comparison.

Man I've always loved this stuff. The backgrounds make these games feel so much more alive and suggest some mystery about the setting. A real industrial or cyberpunky vibe these things always made me wonder. One of my favorite parts of games growing up. A shame they seem to be a lost art nowadays...

Gorgeous. Love how kinetic that flash of of light is in the animation.

I'm so glad I'm not the only person who has this fetish

I've seen this use of the word before, but it's incorrect. A fetish is one of three definitions: a charm which you ascribe magical properties, an irrational commitment to a course of action, or a form of sexual desire linked to gratification of a specific object.

Still my favourite thread on neogaf.

You and me both... I told a friend of mine the other day that "that whole 90's post-apocalyptic cyberpunk setting so popular in 16-bit games may very well be my favorite setting ever", and he nodded his head in total agreement.

Did Stage 5 somehow escape this thread? I wish I could gif the entire background scroll.

This subject makes me think of FF6's Narshe.
