Its crazy when you think how big the skyscrapers in the back must be.

You have no idea how much the SOR cityscape as well as Sonic's Casino Night Zone formed my mental picture of the city in general when I was a kid. I mean, sure, we went there every now and again, it's about an hour away, but as a kid I never went there at night....so this was impressive. :)

I still think of this to this day, by the way, so it's not an odd topic at all.

Subbed. Amazing how a lot of these backgrounds have more personality then many much more technologically advanced games today. Only the Souls games really evoke that sense of mystery.

This just one of those threads where you read the title and think, "This was made specifically for me"

Neon Night Riders, for old times sake

Cool thread. My contribution is stage 8 from the original Front Mission. Very few missions took place in cities, and only one of them took place at night. Not an in-game shot because I couldn't find one and can't be arsed to boot up the game and play this far in, so this is the tilemap layers of the entire stage.

I always found this interesting to look at as a kid. Especially when animated.

I'm not sure the middle qualifies, but the variety of buildings as you swing by is pretty good, especially at that scale.

The city on the sides really sets this off.

After the Sonic Mania thread turned into an in-depth analysis of the building perspective in Studiopolis, I kinda just expected this revival to have somthing to do with that.

Granted, it's a 32-Bit Cityscape, but the art direction is clearly inspired by 16-Bit ones, and a number of the buildings are inspired by Streets of Rage directly.

I know this isn't a city, but I just noticed the fetus' wings.

According to the artist its 8-bit, so yeah probably 256 colors.

Here's his website:
http://markferrari.com/art/8bit-game-art/

And more of his animated pictures:
http://www.effectgames.com/demos/canvascycle/

Apparently some of them were actually used in a calendar and in a game called Battle Mage.
Thanks, yeah 256 colours from the website. I absolutely love colour cycling from the16 bit days where it's not obvious that's what's being used, usually requires a large number of colours to cycle but some of the colour cycles on the Amiga were very impressive with 32 colours. Excellent links btw, cheers

damn this thread is perfect! pixellated cityscapes have always been beautiful to me. it is such a joy to see so many in one place!

my favorite one at the moment is from Sonic 1's Casino Zone. i was playing the game via a projector earlier this year and was taken aback by the abstract beauty of the distant neon skyline...

I know it's not the best looking one, but I have a sweet spot for Spring Yard Zone in Sonic 1. The forest, then the city behind it, and then the purple mountains as the night falls, and man, that music... <3

Not sure where this is from. Saw a streamer use it for their intro recently. The rain and smoke effects from the character's cigarette are really neat. If anyone knows where it's from, please share.

Oh cool, was hoping it was from some cyberpunk game, but still neat to know the source. Any cyberpunk games with similar aesthetics? Haven't played Snatcher, but that looks like it might fit the bill.
