It's not really a big "what if" though. Past characters carried the entire first season of Awakening DLC, and those were based on a mechanic they admittedly only added at the end of development. You'd think that in the next game they'd dump all that and go back to only new characters?

Thinking about this sensibly: were it not for the RT from Monolith I think there would have been relatively little expectation that Shulk would show up today. I still believe he's in (or maybe it's just that finally playing Xenoblade makes me want him in), but for all the cult popularity of his game, it's not that readily obtainable and I wouldn't have expected it to be the focal point of a separate three-minute trailer standing alone as its own announcement that was watched by 80,000 people on the English stream. It had to be a big seller like Fire Emblem: Awakeningand even then, not everyone knew who Lucina and Robin were.
As for the Monolith RT on Twitter, either they had as little idea of what was coming today as we did, or they're playing along with Sakurai's elaborate funhouse of smoke and mirrors. Shulk, as a candidate for inclusion, just screams of a post-release unlockable.

I noticed something in viewing the trailer again. Female Robin uses Arcthunder and Arcfire right after one another. I can't tell if a book was quickly swapped, though. One of our expert video analysts need to plumb its depths.
What if it is all a ploy by Sakurai? All the "leaks" and retweets and whatnot from the start were part of his plan?

It's from the Kotaku article, about thate same interview. It's not a direct quote though, this is all in Kotaku's own words, so you shouldn't be reading it that directly.
Also, from another translation of the interview, a following question:

Oh I've got the feeling that since it looks like Chrom has a full model for the FS, we're probably going to get him as an alt for someone. Sakurai is not wasting that stuff this time around, which is great.
That could also even explain the leak to a certain degree. Maybe Lucina was originally being developed as Chrom? don't really think so, but it's a though.

That's not impossible. He's super aware of how the internet is reacting to the game.
If they kept Toon Link and went to the trouble of adding another clone, I doubt that's the case. They'll return - especially considering normals can't be customised.

Both Dixie and Ridley deserve to be in more than any other character right now. Both Donkey Kong and Metroid are important franchises to Nintendo.
Ridley has been in the majority of games at 6. Any other recurring character has been in max 3. Dixie is the next most playable Donkey Kong character after Donkey Kongs and Diddy at three appearances while no other character has been playable in more than one game.
I mean Fire Emblem wasn't even represented in the initial reveal. Star Fox even has had three characters.

I know that this is a work in progress, but why do so many of our new women's faces look so static and lifeless? Their faces are so expressionless. Especially Palutena and Lucina.

Sakurai is a Patriot AI. SSB4 is merely a test to secure his hold on the global transfer of information, to shape the collective consciousness to his own ends. But at least it means we'll get Snake.
