Beautiful video at the link. I don't watch competitive Smash, but I thought Prog was great at the Invitational, and it's clear from everyone who knows him that he's a man with a heart of gold. I wish him the best.
I first met Prog in January 2012 at Apex. Melee hadn't really blown up back then, this was before Evo and before the Documentary, so I had only vaguely heard of him.
This was the first time I traveled out of the country for a tournament, and the first major I had ever attended. It was a pretty overwhelming experience. I found myself wandering around the venue alone most of the time, watching Mango face PPMD in endless friendlies, or M2K practicing against random Puff players.
Out of nowhere, this dude just walks up to me and my friend. "So how are you enjoying the tournament?" It was Prog. We struck up a conversation instantly, talked about the trip from Toronto to Jersey, my thoughts on the tournament, and the ridiculous shit Mango was doing on the TV in front of us.
After a lengthy chat, he offered my friend and I a ride back to the hotel. Here I am, a total
nobody from Toronto, and this dude is offering to drive me himself to the hotel. Unbelievable kindness right there.
It was no surprise to me that just a few months later, Prog became not only the voice of Melee commentary, but a leader and role model of the Smash community as a whole.
I doubt he remembers me because I'm sure he did the same thing a hundred times that weekend and to thousands of Smashers since then. That's just the kind of guy he is. If you're reading this, I just wanted to say thanks, Prog. Thanks for not only making a random kid from Toronto feel welcome at that tournament, but for all the hard work you've put in for this community. It's thanks to you that we are where we are.
Get well, and I hope to see you again sometime!
