Sony FY14 Q1: 3.5M PS3+PS4, 0.75M PSV/TV+PSP shipped

Add Infamous First Light, LBP3 and Driveclub in between those things and the fact that 2015 starts with Arkham Knight, The Order, The Witcher 3, Bloodborne and there it no room for Xbox to react in a long while.

The question now is if the PS4 will be able to get anywhere close to PS2 levels of sales, otherwise we are going to see a sizable shrink in the market compared to 2 generation ago.

15m seems way low if it is at 9m+ already.
I dunno if too many people are going to buy consoles for Infamous DLC but you're right that this Software stuff extends into the early 2015s as well. Shit guys, Bloodbornes a comin'.

PS4 will be at ~19-20M shipped at the end of the year, most likely.

[Calendar] Q2 was 3.5M [ps3+ps4, PS4 probably close to 3M, and 9M LTD shipped]. Q3 is always better than Q2, and Q4 is strongest.

Looking only at PS4 shipments:
Q3 will most probably be ~4M [OK July, slow August, strong September]
Q4 will most probably be ~6M [I would rank it higher if Sony had its big 1st party "hero" game for holiday, also price is still far "perfect" $299].

That's... just about 19-20M. :)

That huge Gap is gonna make things interesting in terms of what strategies MS is gonna take to boost xbone sales. They have to be looking at a price drop like when 3DS sales were miserable as there is no way software alone can close that gap.

And we don't know the specifics of GTA5. Wasn't it marketed towards PS3 last gen. Did it do so much better than 360? I don't know. Truth is, franchises like GTA, Assassins, Battlefield, COD are too big now and lot of people would know by now its not a console exclusive.

IIRC, the bundle pushed the PS3 to it's first hardware win over the 360 in years, and I think the software sales were close to even between the two, which is really good considering how many more 360s are out there in the US.

That's just it. Sony has spread their releases well. This is not even taking in to consideration the mass of indie games, several of which are exclusive.

I wouldn't mind a weaker holiday lineup if it mean a greater spread of games throughout the year. Summer is always slow as hell.

It will be interesting.

But, the way Sony is cutting PS4 hardware manufacturing costs, I would bet that Sony would be the first to cut price. So they really are in a pretty insurmountable position as far as MS is concerned, if you look at how everything adds up, figuratively speaking, and er, physically too.

I genuinely don't know, but what releases does the xbone have to counter Bloodborne and The Order in Q1 2015?

Is it just Quantum Break or something? Surely there must be something else.

So neither console has surpassed even 10 million sold through units but the gen is already over? LOL okay.

Wouldn't say its over, but MS can NOT afford to pull 1:1 with Sony in the NA market. Right now they're actually behind AND the gap has actually been widening since Dec.

The UK was their only other strong market and that does look like its lost this go around.

Like it or not, the WW market is increasingly becoming a major place for growth, just as it has become with movies. Japan is dead in the water, international sales otherwise have been growing strong with Russia, Brazil, and possibly soon China entering the fray.

MS can weather it. They can even pull back. But winning it, maybe even in NA is going to be very, very costly. And I've yet to see any of their divisions willing to spend the sort of cash needed on offering consumer value to turn the tide. They tend to move on to the next thing, or pump it into PR and Marketing to "change minds".

Industry Verified
That Nintendo number includes 3DS, so not really.

Does anyone else think that if Sony maintains their advantage over Microsoft through the holidays that the trend will be set (for the most part) for the rest of the generation? Talking US here.

Nintendo (1.43 million) + MS (1.1 million) < PS4. King is back.

Yep really puts things into perspective

Yeah, it does. It's pretty obvious that, unless something major happens, we're going to see a contraction of the industry for this gen.

One battle doesn't win a war. But it's a start.

Send them home crying, Sony!

I don't follow xbox one news since I don't own one, but I'm sure there are some, with all the ps4 had no game jokes around, I assume xbox one had to have a lot more games than ps4

So I think ms don't have to worry about the game, just focus on price drop as fast as they can I guess

I don't think this is terminal for MS or anything close. The PS3 was way behind the 360 for most of its life, but pulled level (overtook?) right at the end of the generation. If MS can bring the games then people will buy.
Sony Too mk.II

Ain't happening. Wii U has a better chance of recapturing the casual crowd. There is no road from Microsoft to a PS3-like recovery.

Sony is certainly running away with it, but they're not doing the best of jobs with keeping the pressure on, in my opinion. The total of lack of updates for the system when compared to the XBO's updates is pretty sad. Also, even though I understand the Japanese home console market is dying, they could have probably done a better job at propping up the system with something appealing over there. Is FF XIV out for PS4 yet there?

What should they do, bankroll the Japanese devs who have moved on to mobile?

Now that's some healthy console sales. Pretty good though I wish they'd separate them. I hate this bundling sales thing

Over 3 to 1. Must be chaos at MS HQ

It's over. There is nothing they can do to win now. Their real battle is to not be 3rd place now, which will be tough...

Of course it is. Beta was there on the launch [Feb], and full game was out month or two later.

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
I'm on my phone. But did Sony post a similar Forex loss like Nintendo?

In other expenses, Sony recorded a Foreign Exchange loss of about 19 million US$.

I'm still puzzled as to how Nintendo recorded a larger Forex loss comparatively to Sony

Edit: If am not mistaken, Nintendo does not convert their earnings in EUR into JPY, they keep it in their local currency. As such, the Forex loss is an accounting loss in relation to their deposits in local currency, converted into JPY.

Why is this idea becoming more popular as these weeks go by here? What can the Wii U do to not be in third place 3-4 years from now?

It's pretty much a lock that Sony will be #1, MS #2, and Nintendo #3.

Trust me, outside of dedicated forums, "lack of updates" isn't an issue. It won't affect sales in any way. As for your second point, they're having their Japanese studios work on PS4 games. What more can they do?

I don't think the Wii U will end up in second, but there's a slight chance. The Holidays will provide a much clearer picture. The Wii U provides a totally different experience, it's a good complimentary console. The X1 is just an inferior PS4 in the yes of many. That's what Nintendo has to leverage.

I think Nintendo has a good chance of being #2 if Microsoft keeps the current trend. Not in the US, but WW sales.

Honestly the later games like Puppeteer and the likes should of been PS4 titles, and they would have had more sales as a result. Sony should of saw this coming and planned accordingly.

15 million is very very unlikely, they would have to sell 1M+ units per month until december

They are close to 10 million as I type this & Nov + Dec will be over 5 million alone. what do you mean 15 million is very very unlikely?

PS4 could be around 19 million by that time.

If GTAV comes out Oct. and Sony has marketing for it, that could really help continue momentum. Destiny picks up in September, GTAV continues it in Oct. and the big multiplats/BF deals for November. LBP3 is also coming out in Nov., that could help target the Family crowd during the Holidays. MS is going to have to offer some very, very good deals if they don't want to get buried (though nothing they do will prevent PS domination, in my opinion).

if Sony creates triple bundles with LBP3 bundle, Destiny Bundle, and a GTA V bundle they can cruise through the holidays

i am going to assume far cry 4 in nov if we go by your theory but most likely we will see gta bundle in november to counter any MS bundle that comes with cod or master chief bundle. far cry 4 has some heavy promotion going on with playstation too so we shall see what happens but Sony seems to be covered pretty well with destiny, gta and far cry for 2014. then early 2015 could be batman and order or bloodborne bundles or even mgs 5!

imagine if they just bundle any of these games for free and sell bundle for 399 they should all do really well for the holidays and maybe even throw in a digital version of one of their first party games like driveclub or something .

The complimentary console point was true of the GameCube; especially since it was a cheap price ($99). Still ended up in third. And that was with much better third party support than what the Wii U is getting. I can't see the Wii U going to $200 or less anytime soon due to the gamepad alone. That's the problem; it's a secondary console that's priced as a primary console.

It's pretty obvious that Sony is also gearing up for a huge 2015. With a potential price drop next year, it could help them increase their lead even more.

WiiU has the price advantage, plus a much more compelling set of exclusives from XBO (as a second console comparison). Kart and Smash still have a lot of selling left to do, then next year Zelda. I think the fans will show up this fall. Like I said, it will be a battle.
