Destiny, how good is it really?

I've been watching gameplay footage since they released any and honestly...
The game looks ok. Looks like something I'll play for 20 hours and then drop.
But everyone is talking about it like it's the GOTG (or cross gen... when will they stop this!)
To the people who got to play it. Is it really that good? How long do you think it'll last?
I mean Titanfall was also praised and hyped... The game got forgotten so quick.
I remember my facebook feed being flooded with people saying that titanfall was the ultimate experience and that all other console FPS' would never dent it. Now, we never even talk about Titanfall anymoe except to crack jokes about it.

Will Destiny be the same? Does anyone else doubt it's greatness? Am I being silly and should I just wait for the game to come out and be completely amazed? Or what?

Titanfall was forgotten due to a lack of content.

Destiny seems to have a lot of content. I never played Destiny before, but im sure its legs are longer than Titanfall.

We got to play a small slice of the experience in the beta.

If you loved it, pick it up.
If you enjoyed it, wait for reviews.
If you thought it was disappointing, wait for reviews.
If you hated it, don't buy it.

Titanfall fell off hard because the novelty of mechs wore off fast. On foot gameplay wasn't interesting enough to want to play it longer. Rather dead game world.

It sounds weird, but the gameplay of Destiny makes the game look terrible. The crap trailers that Bungie release also sell the game horribly short. I thought the game looked naff until I first played the Alpha.

You have to play it to really understand the scale and scope of what they're trying to achieve. I think it's brilliant. It might not be to your taste unless you love first person shooters, but I really dig it.

I don't understand the phenomenon of people watching videos of games and feeling qualified to judge a game.

Anyways, the game is great. I put over 40 hours in the beta, which is just a fraction of what the retail will offer. I wouldn't be too worried about getting your moneys worth.

This is what I was looking for. I was already thinking that it's one of those things that you have to experience personally to truelly understand it.

Titanfall looked like half a game.

Destiny looks to have a lot more to offer. It felt good in beta, although it lacked an essential piece: general VOIP.

I think Destiny and Titanfall shouldn't be compared in terms of hype.

Titanfall was over hyped way before people played it and then fell off the map shortly after people got their hands on it

Destiny had a pretty luke-warm reception (if that) and only started to really get hyped when people started playing it (Alpha and Beta).

The game is pretty good, though whether it has legs remains to be seen (obviously). However, it does seem Bungie and Activision are in for the long haul on this one and it should get regular content upgrades. I am pretty sure it will last a while.

Can we wait for the game to come out first ? How should we know ? Bungie had been terrible at communicating about the game, if it wasn't for the beta, we wouldn't know much about the game mechanics right now

I don't normally like first person shooters, but I really liked Destiny beta a lot.

But before the beta I wasn't hyped at all. You have to play it to understand it.

Why don't we just wait until the game comes out?

Nah. We gotta be concerned and ask questions that no one has the answer to because reasons.

Exactly this. Before the Alpha this wasn't on my radar at all. After the Alpha and Beta I'm hooked.

Destiny longevity is unknown but its fun to play.

The concern many have is it will be a 20 hour game then the DLC rolls in at £ 15 a go

(that's the digital price difference from ghost edition to standard = £ 30 with 2 x DLC)....

The 2 x DLC are already listed on PSN digitally...

Although it will still be good the Borderlands content comparisons will continue

(although they messed up with last gen only for the prequel inmo....)

That's the sad part of it, apparently most gamers play for content and not for gameplay. After hundreds of hours spent on it, playing Titanfall feels still as fresh (and playing other shooters does indeed make me want to go back to Titanfall), but it doesn't seem to be enough for a game to be appreciated.
I'd still be interested in how "forgotten" Titanfall really is. It's not much discussed online, except between people playing it, but that's the fact for most games. I don't see people talking about Watch Dogs, Infamous or Dead Rising either.

As for Destiny, well for some people it does feel like a game that can be entertaining for a relatively short time, like you said. I felt that way, but I also did with Borderlands or Diablo3.

It's definitely what I think it is. I was so "meh" on the game until I tried it.
If you're not sure, you could always cop it a rent before putting your cheds down for a full buy. A couple of buddies and you're in for a good time IMO.

How did you manage that? I put a dozen hours into it, levelled two characters and got a little way with a third, and played some multiplayer. You must have been going through the same content repeatedly, or playing multiplayer (which is fair enough, but doesn't indicate the breadth of content).

I liked what I played, but I really hope it's a smaller percentage of the total game than what's been indicated because it wasn't long, and it sure wasn't deep.

Destiny is like if you take the best things from Halo, Boarderlands and Guildwars 2 and mix them together with amazing artstyle.

I played the Alpha and Beta for about 20 hours each.

A lot of hype - sure, a lot of fans too. I've been in your shoes OP and then I've played the Alpha and then some Beta. The game is actually fun to play. I can see it having the same life expectancy and the same development as Borderlands, but Borderlands 2 had better writing and better story. Destiny is multiplayer focused through and through, so it's kinda natural to expect it to be GW2 of FPSes.

Meaning there will be a lot of players, almost anyone who is in the know would have played it, but it doesn't have the qualities of a breakthrough 10/10 bestseller.

Why haven't you played it? It was free on pretty much everything.
Watching footage sounds boring.

Edit
I see... I'm ultra late to the party.

Gonna play it with friends? Buy it!
Gonna played alone? Do not buy, its boring to explore alone.

For me, both Beta and alpha were very Fun with some friends and we also enjoyed PvP.

For me from the beta..

PvE was very good. But I think that you will need to play co-op 100% of the time to get the full enjoyment.

PvP I did not like. Made even worse by P2P. But being from Europe, and knowing just how many fucks bungie give for non north american players, I will avoid this game.

In case people are not sure of my statement.. This game like every other bungie game will give host automatically to north american players, and the middle finger to everyone else. A prime example of how much bungie thinks of the rest of the world would be the iron banner... That started at 23.30h CET !!! No fucks were given for non north Americans.

It is a shame because if the multi matched the campaign, I would be all over this

I was pretty underwhelmed by the gameplay videos, but I found it to be fun. Will it be great? No, probably not. Much like titanfall it'll have it's shortcomings, but in the end be a fun long lasting game. Difference is Titanfall lacked content and certain fanboys made it their prerogative to shit all over it which won't be the case with destiny.. I see it's destiny to be an 8.8-9.2 score on metacritic.

Launch Date - Launch problem >> Terrible game

1-3 days after that - The story is bad >> Terrible game

1 week after that - Content is not enough >> Terrible game

1 month after that - Raid is bad or too hard >> Terrible game

So many possibility that Destiny will be a terrible game but it is the best FPS that I have played this year.

People are still playing Titanfall. I was playing this weekend on X1, it's just gone off the radar of the console warriors as it's no longer seen as a 'threat'.

My thoughts on Destiny it will sell well and like most games suck in the mainstream who'll play for a while then jump on the next big game to release after, rinse and repeat. I don't think the PVP has much depth in Destiny it felt downright sloppy and not much fun from my time with it. The main mode was OK but the enemies weren't that fun to fight after a while.

That's the sad part of it, apparently most gamers play for content and not for gameplay. Playing BF4 the last few days has really hammered that home to me. I like BF4 but TF still feels more interesting to play imo. From a pure gameplay POV BF4 is an absolute mess of a game in terms of what players are doing. They're all over the place, it brings into focus how Respawn's decision to make TF 6v6 was the right one. TF battles actually feel amazing each and every time. the maps feel great even the new ones.

Hate to break it to you but 99 percent of games get forgotten about after a month or so. Its the nature of so many releases etc. blah blah blah it's not the same as when I was young and a game lasted you a year lol Titanfall is still a great game and enjoyed by those who play it, but no game is going to be brought up constantly. even The 7 threads front page of the last of us will be gone in around 3 weeks. It's the nature of the beast now

Judging from the Alpha it's rather "meh".

Shooters don't need grind-y content. The novelty of playing wears off fast.

Luckily it's a co-op game. You'd be hard pressed to find one you can't have some fun with.

We've barely got a snippet of it in the beta and the game is damn good. But honestly, tell me any other shooter out there that is better and that will have the longevity of Destiny?
Hardline? Please. COD? Come on. I love the RPG elements and the MMOish style world. For me, this is the perfect blend of a shooter I've always wanted. You can say it was boring and all, but your judging that from a beta. Of course Bungie ain't gonna release all the marbles. Sure there were some negatives of the beta. Like the sometimes empty and small world. The bullet sponge like enemies. Maybe the MP isn't for you. But that's why there's also a load of content on the PVE side and 3 other worlds for us to explore, including locked locations of Old Russia. And for those who hate the always online like aspect, well that's the evolution of video games. If you hate it, well you might as well quit video gaming and stick with the classics of the N64 and 360 era or learn to not be such a hermit.

The game was in open beta, why didn't you play in yourself?

Game is fun, just people are worried about the content in release and the mediocre ai.

Destiny is like if you take the best things from Halo, Boarderlands and Guildwars 2 and mix them together with amazing artstyle.

I just puked a little. I can't talk about the other games, but Destiny does not have the best things from Halo, not even the moderately good things. Destiny is its own thing, for better or worse.

OP, you should have played the beta, you will not get a consensual answer since it seems to be a very divisive game. For what it's worth, I found it just all right. The marketing and some player reactions are overselling it by quite a margin; it's certainly no revolution, and it's not even a particularly epic experience. But you know, YMMV, and there's already a plethora of Destiny threads so just pick one and read.
