I've always personally imagined Ridley to be intelligent and cunning. He's not the brains of the operation (that pun belongs to Mother Brain), but I've always seen him as being the actual leader of the space pirates while Mother Brain contacted him and used the space pirates to fit her needs. But this is all head cannon. Nothing really backs it up.

I've never seen him as being an animal or beast like, but Other M, once again, had other ideas about that.

Even Other M showed him as intelligent. Sure, only when he was the Choogle, but it was still there.

But HE IS though.

I mean, he's literally designed to be your friend...the Robotic Operating Buddy (or your family computer's robot). Even though he's a robot, there's no denying he has appealing, humanoid characteristics with big, cute eyes.

If Dark Pit eventually got a different outfit, people's opinions would change. Regardless of his character, he just isn't visually distinct enough. Even the glasses from that Bayonetta scribble would help.

Exactly what I think. IMO, an interesting character either has a distinctive gameplay or is visually distinctive from the rest of the cast. If Dark Pit is a complete clone from Pit (like Lucina is from Marth), he will be neither.

Even Doctor Mario has some visual distinction from Mario.

And Fire Emblem isn't? The sales of the Fire Emblem prior to Awakening also have been pretty weak, and it's in a constant "identity crisis", as there's only a handful of games that play in the same time with the same characters, like Ike's 2 games.

Eh, in spite of the cast changes, it's not like they're radically different games. From FE5 and on, although each game adds its own twists, or removes certain elements, the basic elements have been mostly the same.

The biggest change to the formula was likely Awakening itself with its open world map and character building aiming to use that (unlike Sacred Stones, which had an open map but with character progression systems similar to FE6/7's).

For example, I've always assumed that Ridley could talk and issue orders, even though he's never been shown doing so.

I always find it hard to view Ridley as a leader of space pirates

I feel like there's two main perspectives:

1. He's an intelligent, tactical leader of the Space Pirates
2. He's a champion warrior of the Space Pirates: someone they bring out to execute critical missions. Not a monster, but not someone with actual leadership ability either.

For a future game, I'd like him to speak in the same manner as the Omega Pirate - you can hear him issuing orders in some incomprehensible, guttural language, but it still avoids humanising him too much. Actually hearing him speak or reading his diary would break the alien nature of his character too much. It works for Space Pirate grunts, but not Ridley.

Give the gameplay more of a reverse harem element to it, make all the males fujoshi bait and have Samus able to freely explore multiple areas with each one to build up relationship stuff with them. Would probably sell 10x the copies even if metroid fans would hate it the mass amount of easy fujoshi money would make it the best selling in the franchise

I can see what people mean when they say Ridley comes off as a non-sentient beast. You really have to go in depth to propose any characteristics that nullify that notion, because all you see when he fights you in most games is just a screeching monster. It's not that outlandish for most to see him as inhumane and... stupid. But I don't think it's a valid reason against his inclusion. In reality, there aren't any. It's just Sakurai choosing to not include him.

So murdering countless people and turning them into brainless zombies is more humane? Ganondorf did that, yet nobody says Ganondorf is a mindless monster or lacks the humanity to be playable.

I think it's more that Ridley doesn't have speaking lines. At least he never has in any of the games I've played. He's admittedly Samus' greatest, most recognizable foe outside of Metroids and possibly Mother Brain, but he isn't human in the way Ganon is human because he sorta doesn't talk in games. Which makes sense, of course. Metroid is usually a fairly soft-spoken series. People aren't chatty in Metroid in the way they are in Zelda.

But Ganon, evil as he is, has become more human over the course of the series. He went from being a giant blue pig to a green man capable of emoting. If he were still a giant, blue, speechless pig, then yeah, he wouldn't be a different case from Ridley.

Funny thought: Bowser may have been altered more than Ganondorf in this game.

Honestly I'd be all for the next Metroid game returning to the classic 2D Platforming style, but go for a sillier, cartoony look just to give the series a bit more life (except Samus would be the straight-laced stoic MC).

I don't see him as the leader, I see him as the muscle. Mother Brain, Dark Samus, even High Command and Science Team are the planners. He's the guy who makes those plans happen. He's the guy who personally assaults Ceres and steals the infant Metroid. That doesn't mean he's dumb or wields no authority, it's just that he likes to kill things and doesn't care for what purpose.
