Nope. Sakurai himself has told us that in the development of Melee he cut Dedede, and in the amount of time left from cutting ONE character they added SIX clones.
Not a good choice IMO.
Cutting every single clone from this game would result in a huge loss of roster size and moveset variance, and might not even have given them enough time to implement an additional unique character.
If they're clones there is no moveset variance. ;)
Remember that Doctor Mario, Dark Pit, and Lucina were originally created as alternate costumes with their own voicework and announcer clips, like Alph or the Koopalings, and were bumped up at the last minute to full characters because there was enough time to flesh them out. They didn't even have enough time to do it for Alph, so he didn't get to be a full clone.

These characters were not added instead of someone else. They had finished the roster and had some extra development time left to add a few clones using animation, character model, and audio assets that already existed.
Time could have been better spent elsewhere then creating clones. Other features, better netcode, or anything would have been preferable. Poor use of resources.
You are asking for the roster to be smaller with nothing in return.

Clones exist because their movesets are different from the originals. Otherwise they would be costumes.

"Time could have been spent elsewhere" well not really, because different people work on different things. The netcode guy was not working on Doctor Mario's balance testing or VFX work, and the animation guy could not have been sent to work on additional game modes instead of more taunts for these characters. You really, blatantly have no idea how game development works as a process or how roles are divided up. I don't know what you think you're proving here.

"I want the roster to be smaller for no reason :)" Go play Melee :)

Do you have any evidence that the developers working on the characters ALSO had the expertise to create new features, get better netcode, etc? Like, it's easy to tall hypotheticals but when you really put your money where your mouth is I'm not sure it's as simple a situation as you're making it.

In Sakurai's words, "Have you ever even made a video game before?"

Ok, I finished getting all of Jigglypuff's custom moves, so here they are.
I wrote up all their names and what they all do and also screenshot I took with my phone in this imgur collection:

I have a friend that likes Jigglypuff so I figured I'd get all of hers first. This really kinda takes a while. Really the fastest way is to go on a high difficulty setting in Classic mode and try to get a x3 or more for the custom move items. So while it's spinning you need to time it to land on the red wrenches. Then you need to not lose or you'll end up losing your rewards in the order in which you got them.

Boss Doggie

all my loli wolf companions are so moe
Maybe it's possible that they invested less on Lucina/DP/Dr Mario we could've gotten Wolf and Lucas.

better netcode
Are people seriously complaining about a netcode of a super popular game during the release weekend?
Last release this big with focus on the multiplayer was MH4 and the game was barely playable online during the first weekend because of the servers dying and errors.
Let's not forget about servers in Japan, which mean ping 120-400 depending where you live.

Has anyone found a Ridley trophy at all? I mean he's in the game in some capacity according to the April Direct.

Just ROB, Wario, Jigglypuff, and G&W to go.

So, they used an actual move, Hyper Voice, for one of Jiggs' customs.

Not sure why they didn't call Multi-Slap "Round Trip Slap" (Double Slap's JP name) then.

He might be Wii U exclusive trophy, since the stage he's a boss on isn't in the 3DS version. Sakurai did imply that the trophy variety would be larger on Wii U.

The "conservative" guess was that he'd be a boss on Pyrosphere, and obviously that's Wii U exclusive. But I actually believe the Spainkiller leak; Dark Pit and G&W were teased in (somewhat) similar ways, and ended up as characters.

I don't think you know what being a clone means. The moveset of one character onto a different model with slightly altered statistics or height is a clone.

You're making assumptions about things I say. No, of course the netcode guy wasn't working on Doctor Mario's balance. Game development is broken up into different departments with resources changing as development progresses. Departments like art finish before debugging starts. Once people finish up their work they go on to their next project. The money used to work on Doctor Mario's balance could have gone to a different person to work on netcode.

Not what I said and I can play what I want, thank you very much.

See what I said above. Time and money is budgeted. Companies outsource all the time, which is what Nintendo has been doing with Smash since Brawl. There is talent out there.

I wasn't, it was just better netcode. We want to think they do absolutely all they can to make sure people have the best experience they can online, but they are limited. I could have worded it better by saying more network/bandwith stress testing.

That 'tease' was in no way meant to be interpreted as him being a playable character.

You don't know what you're talking about and aren't going to listen to any of the several people in this thread who are trying to explain things to you, so I guess we're all done here

Always sad to see another person lost to the Character Slot Madness

He's a pretty boring player to watch in all the Smash Bros games, plays rather defensively and always picks the best character (Brawl Meta Knight, Melee Fox, Project M Pit, though the last one is debatable)

If there is something to spam he will spam it until the opponent figures it out. He's such a boring spammy player. I thought that maybe he played like this just to win at the invitational to get a title but nope. That's how he legitimately plays. Kind of lost all respect for him watching his stream. Probably the worst player to watch. Watching him play DHD is painful.

Also, he is the reason ZSS was nerfed. I imagine if Sakurai watched him play with every character he would either nerf everyone or realize that ZSS didnt need to be changed because it's just Zero.

How is samus in general from brawl? Melee she was a hard hitter with a bit of float, brawl she was all float no power

Anyone have an answer to this question? I too am wondering.

Samus was so good in Melee but I just couldn't deal with the Brawl downgrade.

Easy way out of not responding. Go you! Better than throwing more insults around, making yourself look foolish.

Just had a glitch. Crazy Hand grabbed me and threw me down as Master Hand was dealing Hanafuda cards. This made a card spawn inside me, so I couldn't move and get out, causing me to die.

I don't see how people can watch him stream. Personality is pretty flat, doesn't get too excited about what he's playing. Just very nonchalant about everything. Not entertaining to me.

Well, he plays to win, and when there's something broken anyone whom plays to win would abuse it. I don't know if DHD is broken, but he certainly is easily abusable right now since people don't know to deal with his campy moveset.

That 'tease' was in no way meant to be interpreted as him being a playable character.

To be fair, Ridley's teasing has been happening constantly, and knowing that the fans believed his shadow to be a big clue, you would think Sakurai would have told the fans before it got out of hand.

Did Ike's Side B get buffed at all? Without charging it in Brawl it was ridiculously unusable.

He also needed to be able to Side B into Up B for recovery. Any luck on that?

Don't attack clones. Attack useless custom move sets that were prioritized to sell plastic figurines.

Wait wait wait, there is actually a Hanafuda reference in this?

Having a lot of fun with the demo so far. Megaman is super fun, and I love the buffs that Link got. Not sure what to think on Villager yet. He's pretty weird, need to play him more.

There certainly are a lot of Ryu variants in Street Fighter.

Clones aren't bad. Hell, some have evolved over time into something new and better. I don't get where a lot of this anger or hate is coming from.

Is it just me, or does Pikachu seem really nerfed? His attacks seem to lack killing power and it feels like the range for most of them has been reduced. I don't think I've even managed to kill with his Final Smash yet.

Half of the time the anger is because they don't like the specific clone in question. The truth is the inclusion of various clone characters probably pleases more fans than it disappoints.

Are custom movesets that lame?
Then Doc Mario isn't a clone?
Just because you change what a move looks like doesn't mean it is a unique move. :p

I generally don't like any clone, and I mained one in Melee and Brawl: Toon/Young Link. I would not have cared very much if he had been cut. I agree that some clones do make fans happy, like Lucina. I was just disappointed they didn't modify her more. Even one move difference would have nice. Cheapens the character to me. At least with Dr. Mario and Dark Pit being a clone is better apt.
