Hey guys! Voice Chat for Smash is still something I'm super excited to get going.

So, Devo and I would love to do a test run beforehand just to make sure the server and all of the setting we have are up to snuff. We were thinking of getting as many GAFers as we can to test it out this Friday (though the date may change) by jumping on Mario Kart 8 and seeing how everything holds up. If you're available to to do this, please let me know! In addition to helping get things ready, playing Mario Kart with SmashGAF should prove to be quite fun. It would most likely be around 7:00-7:30 PM PST, but still let me know what times work best for you so that we can change it if necessary.

As I mentioned before, servers for voice chat won't be available until a week after launch the US launch. "But Oric," you cry with worrisome tones, "what if I want quick communication options before then?" Well lucky for you, there's a great text based IRC chat already in place for this thread. I encourage people to use this if they have no interest in using voice chat or when playing with people who can't/don't want to speak online. We won't have text features on our TeamSpeak server, so this'll be the place to go for that. Here's the info for that:

Server: irc.rizon.net
Channel: #SmashGAF
Mibbit Link to Chat

Anyway, let me know if you can help this Friday. Looking forward to when we have everything rolling!

Mark me down as a tentative yes. Sounds fun! :)

I'm honestly no expert on the differences between the two, but we went back and forth for a bit and just settled on TeamSpeak. I think it had something to do with making private rooms, but I'm not sure.

Marked!

You can set up your own private server for free with Mumble and the voice codec is a higher quality. ^^

I don't know for the 3DS, but for the 3DS XL I got the cyber grip. It got rid of virtually any hand cramps or discomfort, and the triggers are fine for me but I have kind of big hands. I think at least one moderator got the same thing and didn't like how it has fake trigger rests for your middle fingers, but I don't know if it's a preference thing or a hand size thing. I always press the triggers with my index fingers.

Oh, I have the XL btw. Awesome. I have big hands, so I dont think it would be a problem. Thanks for the tip, man. Thanks!

Interesting. Either way, we have everything already set up for TeamSpeak, but if we actually get a consistent VC community going, I'm down to discuss changing it. For now, let's stick to TeamSpeak. I'm all ears for the Pros/Cons of both for future reference, though!

If mumble has text, then it would be better. Personally, not interested in any voice chat due to the bandwidth. I want to have the best possible connection when playing online.
Wait, it was a common thing? Loooool

I always thought it was just one random guy that ran into it and wrote a letter.
It became common in the later years of Brawl's online. I would just attack one of them and then they would all gang up on me lol.
Lag...on adhoc..? In all my years of playing portables, and playing MP (infrastructure & ad-hoc) on said portables, I've never seen anything like this. I'm chalking it up to it being a demo with terrible optimization.
It's in the full game as well. I imagine the New 3DS would be able to handle it better. There have been people saying that they've had better stability with online compared to local play.
sakurai: world crusader for the end of cyber bullying

my peach lalalalalaling will have to stay offline then ;___;
Do it with friends as well online. :p

thou TP Zelda wasn't much of an archtype, I mean, she barely appears or does something in the game, but the times she does I was drooling all over the place, she looks perfect in that game~

I liked that they gave her more personality in SS but I expected they would stick to something more alike in previous games, and not something you usually see on a romance comedy animu, but then again when has she had a major role other than dress up as a guy, talking you through dreams, or looking perfect on her purple dress? certainly, SS Zelda has more than her previous incarnations

I was expecting a SS alt for smash thou :c

She was a phantom and pirate once.

She was a phantom and pirate once.

The Toon Zeldas have always been the best incarnations in terms of character, even if they're not as memorable as Goddess Zelda, Sheik and TP Zelda from a design perspective. If only they had kept this design from the initial concepts...

no matter how hard they may try, nintendo can't stop me from repeatedly ducking in time to the music during online matches

take that, sakurai

I should have the change.org petition to make SSB4 Wii U a rhythm game up by tomorrow.

Skyward Sword Zelda design is the best

I'm not really a Skyward Sword fan, but I totally agree. I'm really surprised she wasn't at least an alt skin.

I've actually been playing a lot of Mario Kart 7 recently, I guess it's just to tide me over for online play, until Smash 4. I don't have a Wii U so I can't join in on Mario Kart 8, though. Have fun, anyways!

I see, how often did he destroy you in Melee :p
For a while there he was hosting weekly Smash-fests that I would go to sometimes. I got JV 5 stocked by him one time, lol. He's super nice/helpful though, really willing to explain what's going on, what you should be doing differently, etc (and great at articulating it too).

hey guys which 3ds unit has the most resilient analog pad thing, i'm buying a 3ds soon for smash

They all have similar pads, honestly, as mentioned, the broken pad thing is probably blown outta proportion, just be careful and don't mash your system all over the place.

Real talk: When will we get broken street dates on the cartridge.
Depends on where you live. When I lived in Alabama, there wasn't anywhere that would break the date. In LA for the Mario Kart 8 launch, I easily found a copy two days early. So...I'm keeping a lookout starting next Monday.

I agree, from what I can tell all three are the same.

I just got an extra one for Smash-only (bought it yesterday, actually). Annoying that I had to make an NNID just to download the demo though, and I can't use my real one because you can only link one 3DS at a time. :\

New York and Cali seem to be the only states where broken street dates are a common thing. Anywhere else seems to have really low chances.

ok cool, guess i'll get an xl for the bigger screen.
As someone who's playing on the original 3DS and has constant issues with slippery buttons and grip, I'd recommend an XL. I've come frighteningly close to upgrading just for two months of slightly more comfortable Smash.

How fortunate, you escaped this state. Someday, I will manage it as well. Hopefully. Maybe.

What the fuck?, is that a glitch or intended? I cant.

Custom move (not that bad on its own, does 20% damage and lots of knockback, but it has to be fully charged or it's a dud) + tons of attack value from equipment (which are broken!).

Custom moves = perfectly fine, imo, but equipment can be super broken and won't be used outside of playing w/ friends for fun and single player. It's the equivalent of having items on, as far as balance goes.

What's the difference between specials and equipment?

You're welcome. It's the one Steve Youngblood linked:

I think the price has been going steadily up since I ordered it, presumably thanks to Smash popularity. :p *edit* Some newer reviews mention the plastic holding the unit in place breaking. I haven't had it long enough to know, but I would at minimum suggest against taking the 3DS XL in and out a lot. Just take the stylus out, then leave it in its grip all the time.

Can you use them online?

How did I know you had an ex-alabamian vibe about you. I'm stuck in Huntsville and you're right. No street dates ever get broken around here.. : (

You don't have to slam with the force of Odin on your slide pad in order to perform a smash attack. It's not the system's fault.

I have an OG 3DS and the only reason the slide pad came off is because my toddler tried to eat it.
