PS Plus will nearly double in price – only in South Africa

Due to various market conditions, the price of your PlayStation Plus subscription is going to rise slightly. On 01/10/2014 the price of a 12 month subscription will rise from ZAR489.00 to ZAR749.00.

If your PlayStation Plus account is set to renew automatically you don’t need to do anything. You won’t begin paying the new rate immediately on 01/10/2014; instead you will start paying the new price from your first renewal date after 01/10/2014.

This excerpt is from the Sony PSN email sent out this evening to all SA subscribers. As you can expect there is some outrage at the slight 53% price hike which comes in effect from tomorrow.

Why the increase? Is something happening in the economy or in regulatory shtuff? I don't see why they'd just double the cost arbitrarily. Especially when Live hasn't been increased...

53% isn't nearly double. Though that's quite a big increase. Is there any reason for it? Has the value of the currency changed or new tax?

As a comparison: 489 South African Rand to British Pounds is around £27
749ZAR is about £41

The UK RRP for 1 year of PS Plus is £39.99 so it could just be them putting things in line.

I'm contemplating hitting the "cancel automatic renewal" link in the email. For now I've bought a new PS Plus subscription online before chances. This should last me quite a while coupled with my exiting subscription.

In Russia too, fuck!
(but that for 3 month subscription)

For 12 month
По ряду экономических причин стоимость вашей подписки PlayStation Plus незначительно вырастет. Начиная с 01/10/2014 стоимость 12-месячной подписки увеличится с RUB1950.00 до RUB2399.00.

I wouldn't be surprised to see this everywhere outside the US. Companies keep increasing prices outside of the US but leaving games in the US at the golden $60 because they know if they tried to fuck with the US tons of people would complain. Sigh.

People should stop referencing data that makes me feel uncomfortable because games get ported to platforms I don't like

Add another reason to the list as to why having a US PSN is cool.

But seriously why the increase?

Im thinking of just letting it expire.

Erm, I don't think "slightly" means what they think it means. Amazing word usage there considering its only effect will be to inflame the recipient.

They can barely keep their service functional, yet they ask for even more money. I'm guessing they are just trying to find the right price in those areas, because if they had the nerve to raise it worldwide, that would be asinine.

Looks like Sony are finally getting serious about investing money into upgrading those PSN servers.

MS did the same with Gold. This is a good thing.

Assumed this was due to the weaker rand. Considering $60 games on the store seems to be around the R800-R900 mark, this kind of makes sense with it following.

Of Course this basically just means more the reason to move forward via the US PSN. Given the local pricing of almost everything I might as well jump ship with my main account.

I have two years of plus on my account, but if it raises in other regions I won't bother renewing, the free games lately have been kinda bad anyways

Well, now I'm worried about the Australian price increasing considering our dollar is dropping so much. Maybe it's fortunate we already pay too much for PS+, ha.

It's just SCEE bringing the prices inline.

12 month PS Plus Prices:

Code:
   Old New
EU €50 €50
SA €34 €53
RU €39 €48

I guess those currencies have devalued against the Euro since PS Plus first launched.

Arbitrary price rises that the consumer is forced to pay if they want to play online is a "good thing" now, according to gamers*. Well, that's nice to know.

You just keep bending over for the corps, I'll be over here giving them the finger and switching over fully to PC and Wii U**.

*You better be being fucking sarcastic.
**...if Sony tries that shit in the UK or USA.

This had better be true, because I just realised that PS4 owners are powerless to do anything against arbitrary PS+ price rises for any reason.

Our userbase is tiny. This just hurts consumers and will do nothing to improve PSN. Worst part is that they only given 4-5 hours notice before the increase take effect. Its 10:30pm at the moment here, so you have 90 minutes left before the increase take effect. Most people will only find out about it when they wake up tomorrow when it is too late.

They should at least given 30 days notice so that people could have gotten paid and renewed their subs. This is disgusting.

The assumption that Sony will eventually roll out a price increase to all regions?

I'm assuming they'll roll this out to all regions eventually. Might not be straight away so as to not impact the holiday period, but I could see them announce a price increase for all regions early 2015.

This an assumption to explain an assumption. Erm.

Haha, okay.

Anything to back that up other than wishful thinking? I read your other post too, not buying it.

The currencies have devalued quite a bit over the last 2 years but average salaries have only increased 4-6% PA. This increase is difficult to stomach. It should have been increased gradually or they should have given people more time to renew their subs, not four fucking hours.

It's odd how I participated in a PSN Plus survey yesterday. They asked questions about price, slogans and psn+ vs xbl gold stuff. While that's probably just a coincidence, Sony definitely are working on something.
